HOW TO START

MODELING?Ok, so you got what it takes to be a model. What’s next? Read this newbie’s guide tomodeling, get first hand insights from clients’perspective and start the ball rolling.

more the countless times wewere shocked in the runway backstage, seeing the models beforemakeup. That’s the reason whycosmetic has been in such highdemand since the past centuriesisn’t it? Remember, modeling is askill that can be learnt and thereare more modeling jobs outthere than you can ever imagine. It all goes down to what theclients need. If you really wantto be a model, you can!

I wanna be

a Model! You have such a strongdesire & clear indicationthat modeling is whatyou want. You believe youstand a higher chance thanothers and can’t wait to getstarted. But are you on theright track? As clients whohad interviewed and seen allsort of models, from AsiansBrunette , Hispanics, to Afro, hear what we got to say andstart to burst those mythbubbles. By Winnie Puah

MYTHBUSTERS

I’ve to be beautiful, tall, and skinny to be a model

Anyone can be a model! In fact, the bunch of skinny tall girlswalking on runways is only asmall part of the modelingbusiness. Some people are bornwith the genetic makeup to betall and underweight. If you’reone of the 1%, great! But ifyou’re not, fear not. In fact, KateMoss, Calvin Klein’s top model, isnot perfect and she’s only 5 feet6 inches. And we cannot stress.

I’ve potential and will betalent scouted eventually

Ok, so you think you have theright caliber to be a model.Good, you’re confident and that’sthe utmost criteria clients arelooking for. But walking endlesslyalong Times Square won’t getyou any further other thanattracting talent scouting scamsfrom agencies that exist in thename to promote modeling. Ifyou’ve already experiencedpaying a lump sum for entrancefee, sub-standard com card orgrooming courses that get younowhere, you get what I mean.

Stop dreaming and start doingthe right things before your agecatches up. Join a reputablemodeling agency and sign up forproper training. Be careful of anyagency which talent-scouts youalong the street and asks foradditional fees for their servicessuch as entrance fees, memberfees, and starter packages. They’re suppose to make moneyfrom the jobs they offer you, andnot from the services evenbefore you start work.

Get your name and face knownin the industry. Start from smallassignments (e.g. blog shopmodeling, car show, etc), andlocal beauty contests to build upyour experience and exposure.

I don’t need to invest inportfolio, it’ll be FOC.

Well, unless you belong to the1% of highly potential girls, andeven if you are, not all will havethe chance to receive FOCportfolio and com card offer. Berealistic, how many ANTM(America’s Next Top Model)vacancies can there be? Whichagencies will spend money togroom a newbie like you?

Start enrolling professional andaccredited modeling and catwalkcourses, and invest in the initialcom card costs. Agencies need topay for photographers, stylists, makeup artists, equipments,.

studios, designers and printers inorder to produce your com card.As long as they’re not asking forthe sky, anything below US$500is reasonable (in my opinion).

You may also work withphotographers who are lookingfor models to compile theirportfolio. Ask for high resolutionphotos in return. Print out thephotos and mail them toreputable agencies. You mayhave to wait awhile before theycall, be patient, the moreagencies you reach, the higherchance you’ll hear from any ofthem.

BE REALISTIC, HOW

MANY AMERICA’SNEXT TOP MODELVACANCIES CANTHERE BE? WHICH

AGENCIES WILLSPEND MONEY TOGROOM A NEWBIELIKEYOU?

I’m attractive and I’ll besuccessful by default.

Usually, for a commercial shoot,20 candidates out of 500 faceswill be called for interviews, afterwhich, 5 will be recommended forthe final selection, and ultimatelyonly 1 or 2 models will get theassignment. And sometimes, wearen't even looking for the mostattractive. It all depends onwhether the “look & feel” of themodel is suitable for the targetmarket. Most of the time, agencies or clients can see in you, what you can’t see in yourself. Infact, we can turn you into almostany look we want with make-upand lighting which can dowonders.

Thus, having a pretty face willonly grand you an entry pass intothe industry earlier than others, but that doesn’t guarantee yousuccess in the field or a long listof fans. So, what are clients reallylooking for? Stay tune for the nextreport.
