How to request a thesis using EThOS
This is a guide to show how to request freely available theses that can be instantly downloaded for your
research using the British Library’s service EThOS.

1. Logging On:
www.ethos.bl.uk
Login or for first time
requesters see screen

2. New User - enter your details
3. Searching EThOS:
If you are a new user you will need to
register your details and create a
username and password.
Enter your search term in
the search box.
If a search fails to find any matches, please submit
an Inter Library Loan Request so that we can
pursue it further for you.

It will then list the relevant
theses.
This icon means that it is available for
immediate download. For more information
select the title.
Select the free ‘download’
option.
Select ‘Add item to basket’

happy with the order.
Check details are correct.
Read the Copyright Agreement
If you agree to the copyright terms
and conditions select ‘Create Order’

Select to download the file.
The file is being prepared and
will be ready in 1-2 minutes.
Once ready, you will be prompted to
Open, Save or Cancel. We
recommend that you save the item.
4. Logging out of Ethos
Once you have completed your transactions on EThOS – please log out.

5. Requesting a Thesis not available electronically via EThOS
If when searching EThOS you find a thesis that is not available for download, please use an ILL Request
form and we will process the request for you and alert you when the item is available.
