What is the City doing? What is Graffiti?

Who does it hurt?

Remember the 3 R’s!

What can I do to prevent graffiti on my property?

What can I do if I have graffiti on my property?

Why should I care?

Graffiti is the defacement of property through words, markings, and designs or figures on any surface building or structure without the consent of the owner. It can be painted, drawn, etched or scratched into the surface. It occurs anywhere the opportunity exists, including public and private buildings and vehicles.

The City is committed to eradicating graffiti on all City facilities and structures. Wherever we spot graffiti on civic property, we direct a crew to remove as soon as possible.

As, we can’t catch every instance of graffiti; we rely on residents and businesses to inform us if they spot any graffiti on City equipment or property.

• Graffiti damages or destroys buildings and structures and lowers property values.

• It leaves the impression that no one cares about the community.

• It discourages customers and visitors, and can make a community appear unsafe.

• Graffiti invites other types of vandalism and criminal activity.

• It negatively impacts businesses through lost customers and revenues.

• Graffiti costs taxpayers money due to clean up activities.

• Increase lighting and visibility around target areas on your building

• Install video surveillance.

• Do not ignore graffiti. Remove graffiti as soon as it occurs on your property this will help stop it from spreading to other parts of your building or neighbouring structures.

• Consider using paints and products on your building which are more resilient to graffiti. These products are more expensive but have long term benefits.

• React! Don’t ignore it - take action as soon as you notice it. Statistics have shown that the sooner graffiti is removed, the less likely that location will have continued tagging. Graffiti vandals want their graffiti to be seen; if it is removed quickly it will discourage them from continuing .

• Report! The occurrence needs to be reported to the police so they can record and track occurrences and provide the appropriate surveillance. Community Policing staff and volunteers will help you fill out a report and provide you with resources on how to remove the graffiti.

• Remove! The City is partnering with Benjamin Moore Paint to sponsor the Wipe out Graffiti Program which includes significant discounts on Benjamin Moore paint and supplies.
