HOW TO USE THE H1 VOICE RECORDER

    1. Turn the H1 unit on.

o Slide the power switch to the power symbol, hold for 1-2 seconds until the screen says HI.o After a few seconds, the screen will light up. You will see:

audio levels (left side of the screen)

recording format and sound quality (upper-middle)

Note: Keep WAV 48/24 format selected. Its a higher sound quality than MP3.

recording time remaining on the memory card (large number, lower-middle)

    battery charge (upper-right)

(if selected) symbol for LO CUT option (below battery)

    2. Set your input source.

o If you are using the H1 to record ambient ornatural sound, leave it as is.

o If you are recording an interview, plug a lavalier microphone into the LINE IN input. Be sure toturn the switch on the lav mic to on as well!

    3. Check your audio levels.

o Test the sound source you are about to record, and watch the audio levels on the screen.

o Aim for the levels to top out between -12 and -6 dB. Use the INPUT LEVEL UP and DOWN

buttons to adjust the recording level (if conducting an interview, you should ask your subject to speak

    while you are doing this).

Alternately, you can switch AUTO LEVEL on. This will automatically keep the sound

levels even pressing the up and down buttons will have no effect in this case.

o If you are in a windy environment, switch LO CUT on. This will automatically reduce some of the

    unwanted background noise.

    4. Plug in headphones (optional).

o Plug the headphones into the LINE OUT input.

o Use the VOLUME controls to increase or decrease the volume.

Note: no matter how loud it sounds in your headphones, the true recording volume is what

is shown on the input levels display. Headphones can only give you an idea of what the

    recording sounds like.

    5. Record!

o Press the RED BUTTON to start recording. The time remaining number will turn to zero and start

    counting up.

You can make marks (like CD or DVD tracks) in the recording by pressing the PLAY /PAUSE button. This is useful if you want to mark when you start each new question.

Alternately, you can move the power switch to HOLD while youre recording to keep from

accidentally pressing any buttons. You will not be allowed to press any buttons until you move

the switch back to the middle position.

When done recording, press the RED BUTTON to stop.

To listen to what you just recorded, press the PLAY/PAUSE button.

    6. Turn off the H1.

o Slide the power switch to the power symbol, hold for 1-2 seconds until the screen says

    Goodbye.
