In Spring 2019, Name participated in the administration of the West Virginia General Summative Assessment. The West Virginia Department of Education is pleased to provide you this report on Name’s performance on the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests.
These online tests are designed to measure student performance on our ELA and mathematics standards in Grades 3-8. The results from these assessments are an important component of how schools assess students’ achievement from the previous school year and plan to assist students in the current school year.
This four-page report includes Name’s individual student reports for the ELA and mathematics tests taken this past spring. While information in this report is reflective of last school year, the information is vital to improving Name’s achievement during this school year.
We encourage you to use this report to start a conversation about Name’s progress in school so together we can provide the best education for our students.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy is the West Virginia General Summative Assessment administered?Each rigorous content area test is aligned to the state content standards and designed to provide information about students. The results from this test, along with your student’s performance in the classroom, will give you a more accurate picture of your student’s progress toward graduating high school equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in college and the 21st century workplace.
What information does the test provide?The assessment is like an academic checkup. It helps teachers and parents/guardians see how students performed after a year of learning. The results can reveal areas where your student is excelling and where your student may need extra help. They also provide valuable information your student’s school can use to improve student learning to ensure all students are ready for college and careers when they graduate high school.
Where can I fi nd more information?A document titled “How to Read an Individual Student Report” is available to help you better understand your student’s test results. This document and additional resources that can be used at home to help your student with this more rigorous schoolwork are available from your school and by visitinghttp://wvde.state.wv.us/wvccr/families.html.
How should I use this report?The student report can provide a basis for conversations with your student’s teachers. Now is a good time to work together with your student, student’s teacher, and principal to utilize the results, along with a variety of other factors, for help in making instructional decisions. As parents and guardians, your involvement is key to your student’s success in the classroom and beyond.

With your student, use pictures to talk aboutfractions; for example, draw 8 flowers. Discussthat if the flowers are 2/3 of the set of flowers,then the entire set must have 12 flowers.

Measurement, Data and Geometry Your student can often convert measurementunits, interpret line plots, solve volumeproblems, graph points on the coordinateplane, and classify two-dimensional figures.
With your student, classify two-dimensionalfigures in a hierarchy based on theirproperties. For example, all squares arerectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

Modeling and Problem Solving Your student can often solve well-posedproblems in applied mathematics, useproblem-solving strategies, analyze real-worldscenarios, and use mathematical models tointerpret problems.
With your student, discuss what a wordproblem is asking and whether any moreinformation is needed. Solve using strategiessuch as drawing a picture or diagram, ormaking a table.

Use Mathematical Reasoning Your student can often explain mathematicalconcepts, interpret well-posed wordproblems, construct viable arguments tosupport his or her reasoning, and critique thereasoning of others.
With your student, cut one paper plate into 4equal parts and another into 6 equal parts.Color parts of each plate and describe them asfractions of the whole. Explain how thefractions compare.

Ask your student to read a story and find atheme based on details in the text. Then askhim or her to compare and contrast twocharacters, settings, or events from the storyand explain how they relate to the theme. Askyour student to read another story andcompare the themes and topics.

Ask your student to read an article about atopic and find the main ideas and supportingdetails. Then ask your student to explain therelationships between ideas or events. Havehim or her read another article about the topicand contrast the authors’ points of view andpurposes.

Ask your student to read articles about a topicand write an essay that supports an opinion orexplains the topic. The essay should belogically organized and have a clearintroduction and conclusion. Ask your studentto revise and edit the essay so that the ideasare fully developed and any errors arecorrected.
