Addiction is one of the easiest things to develop in life. It could be about food, a lifestyle, a certain material or

even a person. If your addiction makes your life better, like getting addicted to sports or healthy foods, then

you’re on the safe side. But what if you get addicted to something that puts your life and everyone else’s in

danger? Now that is a different story. If you have a bad addiction, the only direction you need to do know is to

overcome it. Below are EzHealth’s tips on how to overcome addiction.

Get some support. One of the reasons you get addicted to something is because no one is around to

stop you or tell you that you had enough. Get a support team consisting of family and friends who are

willing to help you overcome a certain addiction. Stay in their company for a few weeks or months

depending on how strong your addiction is. It will be difficult for you and them but at least you know

that you are around people who care about you.

Read about your addiction. If you have an opponent, the best weapon you can have is information.

In this case, your opponent is addiction. Make yourself well-informed about what you are dealing with

through reading and research. The internet is full of free information that can help you understand

your situation. When you understand what you’re going through, you will be able to find a more

effective way to deal with your addiction.

Identify and avoid triggers. Your addiction is like a bomb that goes off whenever a trigger is

activated. It is best that you identify those triggers such as a place, a situation, or an emotion and try to

avoid it as much as possible. For example, if you have a drinking problem, avoid passing by a bar or a

liquor store that can remind you of drinking. If you have a smoking addiction, avoid places where

people usually smoke. If you start smelling a cigarette smoke, get away from it immediately.

Distract yourself. Your addiction is something that is capable of enslaving your thoughts and

attention. It entices your five senses so that your mind succumbs to it so that you can do something to

satisfy it. If your focus is not that strong enough then use distraction as a weapon against it. Whenever

you start feeling the addiction kicking in, immediately find a way to distract yourself with things that

stimulates your five senses in a good way. Quickly grab a tasty but healthy snack, change the channel

to something more interesting, or call a friend and start having an interesting conversation. Do your

best to keep your mind off the addiction.

Sweat it out. A good amount of exercise can cure a lot of problems, especially addiction. Sweating it

out in the gym or at home is a good way to overcome an addiction because the physical activity takes

your mind off the addiction and lets you focus on the challenges such as finishing another round of

pushups and sit-ups. And as a plus, exercise gives the body a natural high, leaving you feeling good

while lowering your craving on a certain addiction.

Start a project. Addiction usually sets in when you have nothing to do, so one of the things you can

do to overcome it is to find something to do. Start a personal project like doing some arts and crafts,

take up a class on a certain skill that you can use, or put up your own blog and write about your

experiences in overcoming addiction. Make sure that your personal project is something that you

really enjoy. It’s all about channeling your attention into something very productive.

If you noticed, the tips I suggested are ways to draw your attention away from your addiction. Because I

believe that if you don’t mind it, it doesn’t matter. Let your body get accustomed to a lifestyle without a taste

of that addiction. Give it some time and eventually you’ll be able to overcome it and get rid of it totally.

thinking.” ~Santosh Kalwar
