How to Make a Dog Door Breeze Stopper

Make these great breeze stoppers in all sorts of colours & fabrics.

Make sure you read all instructions before starting.

You will need;

1. Fabric- 1 or 2 different colours. I have used quilter’s

fabric 100% Cotton and have used 2 different colours,

one for body and one for under ears. You can also

change the colour to top of head and to chest

2. Tape measure

3. Good pair of scissors

4. Cotton to match

5. Pins and a needle.

6. Sewing machine with basic straight stitch.

7. Stuffing- Craft toy filling used for head and tail. And stuffing for rest of body. You can use

shredded material, saw dust, wadding anything that is soft and will not be lumpy. I have

used an old shredded sheet.

8. Buttons for eyes and nose, alternatively you can purchase teddy eyes and nose from the

craft shop.

9. Ruler and pencil or material marker

10. Dog door breeze stopper pattern. The pattern comes in 4 pages. Pages 1, 2 & 3 tape together

lining up the crosses +. Tape to hold in place and cut out your pattern. Page 4 is one piece,

cut out. I have cut mine on to calico.

11. The tail and head end do not met as many door ways are of different size. This way you can

make as long or as short as you wish.

Fabric Preparation

Step one; Measure the door you want your breeze stopper to sit.

Now add 2.5 cm to that length for seam allowance.

Step Two;

Double the fabric with right side facing each other.

Lay all your patterns onto material and make sure you have enough fabric.

Pin patterns to the material thinking about how the material is going to look on the

right side

My door way was 94cm . I have placed the tape measure at tail end, and I have put the

dogs paws 2.5cm longer then my door way at 96cm this allows for seams.

Use your ruler and pencil to join the tail and head end together. This is so you can get

a straight cut.

Cut out your material- 2 dogs body, 4 ears, 1 top of head, 1 chest, & 2 legs

Leg is only on one side of the dog, so it can go up close to the door.

I have used a different red for the inner ear of dog. Cut 2 patterned ears and 2 other

coloured materials to make the 4 sides.

Step 3; (left) Sew the ears and the legs together.

Making sure the right side is inside out. Sew a

1 cm seam allowance around. Leave top open

on the ears and bottom open on legs so you can

turn in right way later and stuff the leg.

Step 4; (Above) Place the dogs body together, right side facing each other.

Pin the front legs/chest piece into place.

Sew the chest together leaving a 1cm seam

Step 5;

(Above) Fold back the head as shown and pin the ears in place. If using different coloured

ears make sure the colours are facing the right way

Step 6; (Right) Join the top of head with some

pins, most of the head sewing is slowly

done and joining as you go around the

corners.

Step 7; (Left) Now it’s time to sew the rest of the body. Make sure the

body is pinned together and matching. Sew all a way around

leaving a small gap on the underneath side for turning inside out

and stuffing.

Turn the dog inside out. Now you have a dog ready to stuff.

Step 8; Start stuffing the head and front paws. There is no stuffing in the ears. Stuff the tail and then

stuff the body with material, saw dust, wadding, anything that will stop the draft and not look

lumpy.

Lightly stuff the leg, you don’t want that too bulky.

Once all stuffed, hand sew close the holes.

Step 9;

Hand sew the buttons on for eyes and nose and hand sew on the hind leg.

You now have a dog weather breeze stopper.
