QUICK START GUIDE

Updated 24 August 2015

What’s in ProQuest? More than 3000 full-text journals, over 500 e-books and over 20,000 full-text Master’s and Doctoral dissertations on nursing & allied health topics, together with the British Nursing Index (BNI), Medline and PsycInfo databases. You can save and organise your favourite documents and searches in ProQuest’s My Research section. See page 7 for more details. Please note that not all journal publishers release the full text of their articles onto ProQuest straight away. There could be a delay of up to 12 months before the full text appears in the database.

How to log in to ProQuest

This takes you to the OpenAthens Authentication Point where you enter your Athens username & password in the login box.

Please ask the Library staff if you need any help.

ProQuest is in the alphabetical list of Resources on the Library & Knowledge Services website (http://tinyurl.com/uhcwlib or click Library Catalogue on the Intranet home page).

2

Another way to log in Go to http://search.proquest.com, type Coventry into the top box and click Find.

This takes you to the OpenAthens Authentication Point where you enter your Athens username & password in the login box.

Please ask the Library staff if you need any help.

BASIC SEARCH This is the default search. It searches all available databases and content on ProQuest. Type your search words into the search box. ProQuest will make search suggestions as you type.

Then click Log in next to Univ Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

3

Use Search Within to narrow your results by adding more search words

ADVANCED SEARCH Choose Advanced Search for more search options, including limiting by document type, age, language etc.

Refine your search using the options in the left-hand column. The icons here & next to each search result tell you what kind of publication you’re looking at.

Sort by relevance or date

More topic suggestions from the ProQuest subject index are shown here - click to search

LIST OF SEARCH RESULTS

Tick to select anything you’re interested in

Available full text options

Click here to save in “My Research” - see page 7 for more details

5

REFERENCING ProQuest helps you with referencing. Look for the Cite link. It may look like this:

Or this:

The default is Harvard - British Standard, but you can change and save your preferences, e.g. if you require Vancouver referencing, in “My Research” (see page 7).

WHAT TO DO IF FULL TEXT IS NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE: Although ProQuest includes thousands of full-text documents, not everything is immediately available online. Some publishers don’t release the full text until some months or years after original

publication (this is called “embargo”). In such cases, you will see a icon. Click it to search our LinkSource service for full text.

N.B. You may see this warning message from ProQuest (just click OK to continue to LinkSource)

If full text is still not available, you can use ProQuest to ask UHCW Library & Knowledge Services to obtain a copy of the document for you (there may be a charge for the document request service, so please ask library staff for more details and help with this). To access the document request form, click the title of the document you want.

This will take you to the document’s Citation/Abstract page, where you can see the full publication details and read any available summary. Look under Full Text Availability for the Request option (and another link to LinkSource if you had not already tried it in the results list).

Links to full text sources will appear under the dark blue strip

Click to open an online request form. Make sure that pop-ups are not blocked in your browser settings.

You must provide your name, UHCW library membership number, e-mail and phone number. When you click Send Request the UHCW Library & Knowledge Services staff will receive an e-mail containing all relevant details and will deal with your request.

7

MY RESEARCH With My Research you can save documents and searches for later use and customise your ProQuest searching and display preferences. Click the head & shoulders icon on the strip at the top of the screen and choose Sign in to My Research.

On your first visit, you’ll need to click Create a My Research account.

Fill in the online form. We recommend using your Athens username/password for your My Research account - you’ve already used it to log in to ProQuest so you should have all the details handy. Terms and Conditions in a nutshell: please respect copyright and don’t give your login details to anyone else. Click Create Account.

Then you can log in to My Research every time you use ProQuest.

Adding items to My Research

Click on any document (this option is sometimes found under More…) or use the save search/alert or selected items links to review your searches and anything that you have selected by using the tick boxes. You can organise saved items into folders. When you do more searches, the documents you already have in your folders during your current searching

session will be indicated by Ask library staff for more help with this.

Use My Research to: • save searches and documents and organise them into folders

• create a bibliography in a variety of styles (including Harvard and Vancouver) • e-mail your marked documents • share documents and searches with other ProQuest users • create alerts and RSS feeds so you can be updated when new items are added to your

saved searches • export into reference management software such as RefWorks
