Introduction How to Install WordPress is a short guide to get you

started using WordPress and install it yourself. I

discovered the world of Word Press in 2008 when I

took my first class with VAClassroom and became

very frustrated because I could not find a guide that

was not expensive and then when I would find

something the content would be very techie aka above

my head. You want to be able to install and

understand WordPress yourself; this means no paying

for installations, being in control of your website/blog

and not depending on a web designer.

Once you begin to play in WordPress you will realize

how friendly this fabulous software is to use.

This guide will cover:

Hosting services for http://wordpress.org, installing

and setting it up.

The Techie, and Non-Techie way to install

WordPress.

Installing themes Free or Premium.

The 3 most important steps to take after you have

installed your blog.

FeedBurner


WordPress is a blogging platform that is so versatile it can be used not only for blogging, but also as a regular static website. No more needing to know how to use html or waiting on a designer to update your website for you. Getting your website online is as easy as getting WordPress installed on your server.

Supplies Needed For Techie Install: Website host that allows you to at least have one database and FTP access. I recommend Hostgator.

Domain name registered and pointing to your website host. Namecheap.com is the domain service I use.

Download the latest version of WordPress at wordpress.org and have the file unzipped on your computer.

Filezilla or your choice of FTP client. You can download it here:

Step 1 - Connect to Your Server First you will want to connect your server via FTP. This can be done through Filezilla. To connect to your website via FTP you will need to know your CPanel or FTP username, password, port number, and your URL. Host = Your Domain Name URL Username = CPanel or FTP Username Password = CPanel of FTP Password

Port Number = Most of the time the port number is 21

Once you are connected to your website browse to the directory you would like to upload the WordPress files to. If you would like to install WordPress on your main website (ex: www.yourdomain.com) you will want to upload the files to your public_html folder:

Or if you want to install WordPress in a sub directory (ex: www.yourdomain.com/blog) just create the folder you would like to install WordPress on and upload the files there.

Step 2 - Upload the Files

Next you will want to browse for the WordPress files on

your computer and upload them to your website's server.

Step 3: Create a Database

Next you will need to log into your CPanel and

create a database for your WordPress blog.



Then create a database user for the database you

just created and add permissions to the new

database. Be sure to record the password you use

because you will need it in the next step:





Step 4: Connect Database to WordPress

Script

Now you will need to connect the database to the

WordPress script. To do this stay logged into your

CPanel and go to your file manager:



Browse for the file “wp-config-sample.php”

Then click on code editor.

Within the code editor you will want to add your

Database username and password. This

information you collected in Step 3.



Once you have made the changes needed to the

wp-config-sample.php file you will now need to

change the name of the file to “wp-config.php”



Step 5: Set Up WordPress Blog

Once the Database is connected to the WordPress

script, now you can begin the last step in the

process, the set up process. To begin this step you

will need to go to the URL in which your WordPress

script is installed. For example if your script is

installed on your main domain you will go to

http://yourdomainname.com.

On this page you will need to add your site title,

username, password, email address, and whether

http://yourdomainname.com/



or not would like for your site to appear in the

search engines.

On that page you will see the following:





Non Techie Way:

Step 1: Login in to your CPanel in

Hostgator

Once you have logged in to CPanel scroll down till

you find “Software / Services” and select “Simple

Scripts”

From Simple Scripts Navigation under Blogs select

WordPress



You will want to select Install. Side note if you have

other blogs installed they will be listed.



Now you are ready to select your Installation

location:

Step 1. Where it says “Where would you like

WordPress installed” select the drop down if

you have more than 1 domain to choose from.

Install in a directory is when you want

WordPress in a sub directory

(http://yourdomainname.com/blog) if you don’t

want to do this leave it blank. This is the blank

space to the right of my domain name.

Step 2. you must click the link to create custom

Admin access which is just choosing your

username and password

Make sure automatically create a new database is

checked.

Step 3. Select I have read the terms and conditions

of the GPLv2 license agreement and click the

complete button

Now you will “In Process” and then finally install

complete and where to sign into your new

account.



Congratulations you have installed WordPress

Successfully! Make sure to write down your log in

information. However, your install is not complete

just yet.

Additional important steps

General Settings: On the left side of the Dashboard in “Settings”

select:



You will want to make sure your “Site Title” and

“Tagline” are filled in and click on save changes:



Configure Your Permalinks:

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual

weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of

weblog posts. It is important to understand that the

Default Permalink structure of WordPress is not “search

engine friendly” choosing the custom structure for

Permalinks will help you with ranking.

Login to your WordPress dashboard

On the left side under settings you will find a link to

set your permalinks.



Insert: /%postname%/ and click “Save Changes”



Activate Akismet Plugin

This requires an Akismet.com account. So go

create your account and they will send you an

email to confirm your account and then you can log

in or go back to your email inbox and get an email

with your Akismet API key.

Then return to your WordPress Dashboard select

plugins, navigate to “Akismet” and select “Activate”

Then at the top of the page you will see

Select “enter your Akismet API key” and copy/paste

in your key and click Update Options”



How to Install a Custom WordPress

Theme

Once you have a fresh install of WordPress on your

domain name you will notice that the default theme

provided with the installation may not fit your

personality, or be good for your online business.

However there are plenty of Free, or Premium

WordPress themes available to install on your

website. You may even have a designer create a

custom design for you. However, some designers

will not install the design.

Supplies Needed for Techie’s:

FTP Software. In this tutorial we will use

Filezilla.

Your custom, free, or premium theme. I

highly recommend StudioPress premium

themes.

CPanel or FTP log in information.

Step 1: Download Theme Zip File

Most themes will come in a compressed zip file.

You will need to download this file to your computer

and then unzip the file.

Step 2: Upload Files to Your Domain

Next you will need to open your FTP software, and

browse to the directory:

/public_html/wp-content/themes.

Then drag and drop the theme files to this directory:



Step 3: Activate Your Theme

Then log into your WordPress Dashboard and

activate your theme. Access to your theme is

found in the Appearance box of your Dashboard:

You can first preview the theme before activating it

in order to make sure everything looks fine or you

can click on the link that says “activate” to finish the

installation of your theme:



Non-Techie Way:

Step 1: Log into CPanel

Click on File Manager



Click on wp-content file

Click on Themes



Click on Upload

Click on Browse and locate where you have saved

the theme on your computer.



Click the link: Back to /

home7/yourdatabasename/public_html/wp-

content/themes

Then click on the theme file and extract it.



Then you are ready to do step 3 on page 2

Step 3: Activate Your Theme

Then log into your WordPress Dashboard and

activate your theme. Access to your theme is

found in the Appearance box of your Dashboard:

You can first preview the theme before activating it

in order to make sure everything looks fine or you

can click on the link that says “activate” to finish the

installation of your theme:



Quickest and Easiest Way

In your WordPress Dashboard under Appearance

select “Themes”

Then click on “Install Themes”



You will be given 5 choices but we will be choosing

“Upload” and locate the zipped theme file where

you have it saved on your computer. Click “Install

Now”

Then it will unpack the package

Install the theme

Tell you the Theme installed successfully

Then give you some actions to take. Preview it and

if you like it click Activate!



How to Work with Widgets

Widgets are designed to make editing the Word

press sidebars easier by making unnecessary for

the user of the Word press script to have to edit the

php files. You can easily use widgets to add a

variety of content to your sidebar or other widget

areas.

Supplies Needed:

Access to Your WordPress Dashboard

A widget ready Word Press Theme installed

and ready to use.



Step 1: Find Your Widgets Dashboard

Word Press themes today come widget ready. To

access the widgets you will just need to log into

your Word Press dashboard and go to the

“appearance” box and then click on widgets:

Step 2: Activate Widgets

Once you get to the widgets screen you will find

available widgets on the left hand side:



These are the widgets that are already installed on

your blog. Most widgets already installed come

from the fresh install of Word Press, or may even

come as extras with a premium theme you may

have purchased.

On the right hand side you will see all areas of your

blog where you can place widgets. For example:

Header Right, Primary Sidebar, Secondary

Sidebar, Home, Footer:



To activate a widget you simply drag and drop the

widget of your choice from the left hand section



(available widgets) to appropriate widget area (right

hand section) you would like the widget to appear.

Step 3: Edit Your Widgets

Once the widget has been placed within the

appropriate widget area, for example: sidebar 2,

you can then edit the widget:



Install Plugins

There are a couple of ways you can install a plugin.

1. Search and click activate

2. Upload and activate

When searching you will type in a search term like

you do in Google and WordPress will return related

plugins for you to choose from.



When you find the widget you want, just click

install!

Once you have chosen a plugin, then you just need

to click install or view details:



Once you have chosen to click install on the next

screen click activate plugin:

You will sometimes find your plugins under settings

if they have additional steps for configuring.



How Create Your Feedburner Feed for

WordPress

WordPress already comes with an RSS feed,

however there is no way to keep stats on who is

reading your RSS feed. Feedburner is the best

way to keep track of your readers. Connecting your



RSS feed to Feedburner is not as difficult as it

sounds.

Supplies Needed:

Feedburner account.

A Word Press blog already installed and set

up on your domain name.

Step 1: Set Up Feedburner Account

Although setting up an RSS feed may sound

difficult, it's really not. To set up a Feedburner feed

you will want to log into or create your Feedburner

account, and then enter your website URL within

the box that says “burn a feed right this instant.”

I suggest you click the “I am a podcaster!” even if

you are not a podcaster. You never know you

might become one. It won’t hurt anything.

Follow Directions on the next few screens:







If you are a podcaster there is a step in between,

but if you are not just click the next button and

move on.



When you go back to your Feedburner dashboard

you will now see your feed. Click on the link to your

new feed.

Next click on the RSS button and copy and keep

track of your RSS direct link. You will want to copy

and paste this link to a text file for another step in

this tutorial:



Then you can get your Feed

Conclusion WordPress is a very valuable tool that you can use to

generate an income, and be in control of your own

website. You are going to Love using it! You will be

continually learning to. For example there is keyword



research, Google Analytics and more… This is

enough to get you started in the right direction.
