How to install the HANA server software on a virtual machine

This guide describes how to install the SAP HANA server software on a VMware virtualmachine. Normally, SAP HANA will only install on certied !and very e"#ensive$ hardware,but there is a wor%around for this.

As this is my very first SCN blog post, i would welcome all of you to provide me with feedback on it! Thanks!

When you want to have a ANA demo or sandbo environment, there are roughly two possibilities"

# $uy a certified appliance from a hardware vendor

# %se Ama&on AWS

The first one has the disadvantage that you need to invest a significant amount of money for something that's(ust a demo)sandbo machine* The second option is pretty cheap +although the costs can run up if you leave itrunning all the time, but is limited in terms of memory amount* Also, it's not possible to run $W or -CC on

ANA with the AWS solution*

So, with the above in mind, . suggested within our organi&ation that we installed ANA on a virtual machine,so that we have our own demo environment* .t turned out that that was something a lot of colleagues had already

tried before, but they didn't succeed* They didn't succeed because the ANA installation performs a hardwarecheck during the install, and of course a virtual machine does not meet the ANA hardware re/uirements*

Now, since .'m a little bit stubborn, this triggered me to find a way to work around the hardware check to beable to install ANA on a 01* And there is one, it's /uite simple actually* So, here are the steps to install ANAon a 01"

Prere)uisites

A virtual machine, with at least the following specs:

o At least 24 GB RAM memory

o At least 65 GB 5 times the amount of RAM of !"" space, for e#ample: 4$ GB RAMan% 65 &5 ' 4$( ) 24* GB !"" space

o +ua%core processor &-ut: the more processing power, the -etter. "o notun%erestimate this/(

010 3inu# nterprise installation 0 file

0A !A7A installation 0 &can -e %ownloa%e% from 0A Mar8etplace(. 9ou have to create

an 0 file from the installation files manually, for e#ample -y using mgBurn.

Install OS

here are no special things to consi%er, e#cept:

o use% the %efault Gnome install to -e a-le to run the !A7A 0tu%io on the server totest. t?s not really necessary to install a win%ow environment on the 3inu# server, -ut

?m fin%ing it helpful sometimes.

o !ostname: -e careful to set this correct/

o an% %omain

o Ma8e sure 00! access is possi-le

"uring the installation, or afterwar%s, you nee% to set up a few partitions mounte% on

pre%efine% mount points. >he ta-le -elow will %isplay the file system you nee%, an% theminimal si@es of the %ifferent partitions. ?ve also inclu%e% a column of the file system ?vecreate% %uring my installation:

After installation, -oot up your fresh 3inu# installation an% use utty to ma8e a 00! connection to it.3og in as root. 9ou can also use the remote %es8top graphical environment if you want, -ut in thise#ample will use utty.

hen, give the following comman%:

zypper in gtk2 java-1_6_0-ibm libicu mozilla-xulrunner ntp !udo!y!log-ng tc!h lib!!h2-1

expect autoya!t2-in!tallation ya!t2-ncur!e! python

!ave the pac8ages that are missing installe% -y confirming the installation

7e#t, mount the !A7A installation ""

his shoul% return >rue. #it python -y typing

0o, now we have the file system in place, we have the reuire% pac8ages installe% an% we have setthe 7o =lipping mo%e to on. >ime to start the !A7A installer.

0tart the installer script with the following comman%:

"!etup!h "tmp"hanain!tdir "tmp"hanamodel

>he installer will first e#tract into your installation %ir. After this, the installer will prompt you for apasswor%. >his is actually the passwor% for the "B a%min. nter it twice.

After that, it will install 0A!ostAgent. "on?t worry if it says it can?t connect a few times, this

happene% to me too. Just wait an% it will continue eventually.

After this, the installation %oesn?t reuire input anymore, so you can leave it until it is

complete%. 0it -ac8 an% enKoy the ri%e...

;hen the installation is complete, start the !A7A Mo%eler on the local machine to see if your

!A7A server is running. =onnect to the hostname an% instance num-er you provi%e% %uringthe install. 1se the username 090>M an% the passwor% you entere% %uring the installation.

So, now you have a ANA server for playing around* ave fun with it!
