How to install Brushes in Adobe Photoshop CS3

If you've downloaded the .abr le and don't know what to do next, read this tutorial.

1. Put the .abr le you've downloaded into the folder/Users/{username}/Library/Application

Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Presets/Brushes(on mac O !" or C:\Proram

!iles\Adobe\Photoshop\Presets\Brushes(on #indows" .

$. %hen o&en your dobe Photosho&, active brush tool, o to o&tion &alette and click on to o&en

the brush &reset &icker.

%hen click on little trianel in the riht u&&er corner.

)ext on the list you choose '*oad +rushes'

In the dialo box choose the .abr le you want to load and your new brushes a&&ear in the +rush

&alette and are ust ready to use.

Introduction

Over the years as a graphic designer Ive accumulated a wealth of custom brushes, shapes andactions that I keep carefully organized and labeled for future use. The brush set Ill be sharing

with you today has been in my collection for probably five of six years and every once in a while

Ill find a good reason to load it into my brushes palette. If youve never done that before, dontworry, Ill walk you through it as we go.

If youre playing along at home you should download the brush setbefore we get started.

Step 1

ets go ahead and begin by opening a new document in !hotoshop. "ine is #$%&'%% pixels at

()ppi.

*ince stitching on a plain white canvas is a little silly, lets go ahead and spice up theBackgroundlayer with a little texture. +y default the Backgroundlayer in any new !hotoshop

document is locked, so lets go ahead and doubleclick on the Backgroundlayer in the ayers

palette to bring up the ayer !roperties dialog box. *imply rename the layer or name it

Backgroundonce again and hit O- to unlock the layer.

Step 2

ow that our Backgroundlayer is unlocked were going to add a !attern Overlay ayer *tyle to

it which will give us a /uick and easy denim background to work with.

0ontrol0lick 1!02 3ight0lick4 on the Backgroundlayer in the ayers palette and choose+lending Options from the menu. This will bring up the ayer *tyles dialog box. 0lick on the

!attern Overlay text in the left column. 15ou must click on the text and not on the checkbox.

0licking the checkbox will turn the style O but it wont give you the options for the style, so it

is important to click on the text so we can modify the !attern Overlay style options.4

ext we need to load a new set of !atterns into the !attern !icker. 0lick on the !attern swatch to

reveal the !attern !icker, then click the little circle with the arrow in it at the top right corner of

the picker. 0hoose 6!atterns )6 from the list and click O- to load the new pattern set into the!attern !icker. ow simply click on the 7enim swatch which is the $th pattern in the set and

click O- to close the ayer *tyles dialog box and commit the style to the layer.

5ou should now have a background full of denim and a layer style icon in the +ackground layer

of the ayers palette.

Step 4

Its now time to add some text to our document. !ress the 7 key to reset the foreground color to

black, then press the T key to invoke the Type tool. 0lick on the stage to place the cursor and

type some text onto it. otice that when you added the text that !hotoshop automatically added anew layer for it.

19note2 To commit the text you can either press the :nter key on the ;%key corner of your

standard keyboard or click the 0heck"ark in the Text Tool options bar at the top of !hotoshop.4

ow that our text is created and while we still have the Type tool chosen we need to create an

outline path of the letters. 0ontrol0lick 1!02 3ight0lick4 on the text on the stage and choose

0reate

ow its time to setup everything in preparation for the stitching, and the first thing we need to

do is load the stitching brush set into our +rushes palette. If you havent downloaded them yetyoull want to do it now by clicking >:3:. *ave the brush set to your desktop or someplace

youll remember when we go looking for them.

!ress the + key to invoke the +rush tool, then bring up the +rushes palette by choosing

ow that the brush set has been loaded into the +rush !icker lets go ahead and select the B

shaped brush.

=t last its time to make the magic happen. !ut on your wizard hat and swap the foreground and

background colors by pressing the F key 1white should now be showing as the foreground colorat the bottom of the Tools palette4. !ress the ! key to switch to the !en tool and then 0ommand

0lick 1!02 3ight0lick4 anywhere on that little white outline that is the !ath around the text.

0hoose 6*troke !ath6 from the menu, make sure that 6+rush6 is selected from the dropdown

menu and that the *imulate !ressure checkbox is unchecked then click O-.

5oull now see that the brush we chose has been used to stroke the entire path of the text. *ince

were done with the path now you can either click over to the !aths tab in the ayers palette and

delete it, or simply press 0ommand> 1!02 0trl>4 to hid it.

To make the stitches a little more realistic lets go ahead and add a few layer styles to the Stitcheslayer. Eust like we did in *tep G; lets 0ommand0lick 1!02 3ight0lick4 on the Stitcheslayer

and choose +lending Options. ow add a 7rop *hadow and a +evel and :mboss as shownbelow, be sure to check each setting to make sure you havent missed anything then click O-.

The slight +evel and :mboss will add a little more dimension to the thread while the 7rop

*hadow will add a touch of shading around the edges.

+efore we move on let me show you a cool little trick to change the background color. *ince the

background is a preset color pattern and not an overlay we cant @ust change an underlying layercolor so we have to resort to other methods. 0lick on the Backgroundlayer in the ayers palette

to make it the active working layer. ow lets add an ad@ustment layer by clicking on the 0reate =ew Aill or =d@ustment ayer icon at the bottom of the ayers palette 1its the circle with halfblack and half white4, choose >ueH*aturation and use these settings 1or any that look pretty to

you4.

Step 13

The last little bit of ad@ustment I did was to click over to the Textlayer in the ayers palette andchange its +lend "ode to "ultiply and its Aill opacity to (%D. +y doing this we allow a little

of the denim texture to come through onto our black letters adding a little depth and realism.

19note2 5ou could also paste some real fabric into a layer above the Textlayer and use a clipping

mask to add even more coolness.4

=nytime youre using a text to create this effect you will always have an outline of the lettering,

but what if you @ust want to stitch letters

Then I switched to the +rush tool, lowered the diameter of the brush to J pixels, switched back to

the !en tool and *troked the path @ust like we did back in *tep ;%.

I then added the same +evel K :mboss and 7rop shadow to this new layer of stitches as we didto the original text.
