How to Inspect Your Heating and Cooling System

How will you know that it’s time to give your HVAC system an inspection and maintenance? Basically, routine checkups and maintenance is a must for all home hvac systems. But what if you are not really the handy-man type who really knows how to do things like checking and maintaining the heating and cooling system? Well, doing these things isn’t really as complicated as it may seem. You just need to ensure that the heating and air conditioning flow moves freely and efficiently. However, some of its components such as the flue pipe which is responsible for expelling carbon monoxide, must only be checked by a certified technician.

Some hvac components that you can check to save money on house calls and fuel bills are the following...

· Filters – Check the air filters. This is the easiest and most obvious components to inspect. The filters are the ones that keep the air returning to your HVAC system clean. A clogged air filters will impede the system’s performance thus allowing it to work than normal. This clearly means an increase in your power consumption. The air filter must be kept clean, dust-free and dirt-free. It is recommended to replace it once a month or you can clean it by using a vacuum or wash it under hose or faucet. But be sure to replace disposable filters.

· Ductwork – Check for possible ductwork problems. Exposed ductwork in your attic, basement, and other specific areas in your home can easily be inspected by spotting dirt streaks which may indicate an escaping air, peeling duct tape and loose fitting around the seams, dents in the metal, or broken sections of flex ducts.

· Furnace flame– Inspect the furnace. Make sure that its flame is a steady blue and not a flickering yellow or orange which indicated combustion problems. In case there is some combustion irregularities, seek professional help. Make sure also that the side panels are tightly closed and fastened.

· Air Conditioning Compressors – Check the AC compressor for some obstructions. It must be free from elements that can impede its functionality such as leaves, vines, or shrubs. The compressor fins must be straight and undamaged. It must not tilt as this can impact the HVAC’s efficiency. You can check if the compressor is level by placing a level on top and once it is tilted, make it levelled right away by placing a shim under the unit. You can further check by removing the

top panel and check from some blade damage. If the blades are damaged or dented, don’t try repairing it. Call an HVAC professional instead.

· Grills and Registers – Dust and debris on grills and registers impede airflow so be sure to check them too. Open and shut registers to make sure that they are working fine.

· Thermostat - Check the thermostat for consistency and efficiency. Clean it by removing dust and dirt as this can shorten its life and affect its performance.

Make sure to follow these simple and easy-to-follow HVAC tips. By keeping your system well maintained, it will give more in return – optimal heating and cooling as well as longer service.
