    This documen t will outline the basic steps to setup a printe r in DSL. This isa step by step guide with screens ho t s .

    Access Apsfilter by clicking on the "Printe r Setup" button in the DSLControl Panel

  • The first screen of Apsfilte r asks you to accep t the license agree m e n t . Ente ra "y" and press the key.

  • In this screen the author asks if you would like to reques t his mailingaddre ss . You would normally ente r "n" and press the key. Youcan ente r "y" if you would like the authors addre s s .

  • Just press the key here to ente r the Apsfilte r setup.

  • Press the key to continue

  • This screen shows the permissions for apsfilte r . You should just have toente r "y" and press the key.

  • This screen allows you to setup a new printe r or change an existing one. Wewant to add a new printe r so ente r an "a" and press the key.

  • Now we are ready to add our printe r set tings. For this example we aregoing to setup an Epson Stylus C62 printe r tha t is connect ed via a USBport. For normal printing, you will only need to fill in values for sections 1, 2and 3.

    Type a "1" and press the key

  • Here we will choose the approp ria t e print driver for our printe r . Irecomm e n d star ting with the drivers under the option 4 gimp print menu.The drivers in this menu seem to work well with most printe r s . If you cannotfind a suitable driver, you can try drivers under the other menu options .Choose "4" and press the key.

  • Here are our navigat ion options while searching for our driver. Press the key to continue .

  • Here is the first screen you will see. We will hit the ente r key to scrollthrough the screen until we find a driver tha t referenc e s our Epson StylusC62 printe r .

  • After scrolling down a short time we find "29 - Epson Stylus C60 [stp/escp2-c60]". We will want to reme m b e r the number "29". when we get to the endof the list. Press the key until we get to the bottom of thelist.

  • Now ente r the number "29" and press the key to choose theEpson C62 driver. You will be asked if you want to accept that driver. Youwant to answer "y" and press the key again.

  • We have selected the driver and now we want to tell Apsfilte r how yourprinte r is connect ed to your PC. Enter option "2" and press the key.

  • Our printe r is connec t e d to the PC via a USB cable so we will choose option"1". Choose option "1" and press the key.

  • We are working with a Linux OS and most likely your printe r is on the portLPT1. Since we are connect ed with a USB cable we will want to use theoption shown under the LPT1 option that says "USB under Linux". Under"Full path of the parallel print device:" we want to ente r :

    Full path of the parallel print device: /dev/usb/lp0 press the key

    If we were using a parallel printe r cable to connec t to the PC we would haveente r ed /dev/lp0

  • Option 2 shows 'parallel ' but that is OK. That value will show for parallel orusb port printe r s . We are now ready to define the pape r format . Chooseoption "3" and press the key.

  • We want to choose our pape r format . I will choose "US Lette r" for thisexample. Choose option "3" and press the key.

  • Now we are ready to test our printe r by printing a test page . Choose "T"and press the key. You will be asked if you are sure you want toprint a test. After a few seconds, a tes t page should star t to print. If you donot get a test page, you may need to go back to option "1" to ensure youhave chosen the correc t driver for your printe r . Anothe r thing to checkwould be the device path in option "2" to make sure there isn't a typo in thepath name.

  • Here is a screens ho t of the test page being sent to the printe r . After the testpage is successful, press the key to return to the main setupmenu.

  • If your printe r is setup prope rly, we are ready to finalize the installa tion.Choose the "I" option and press the key to give your printe r aname.

  • Here we will ente r the name of our printe r . If you just press the key your printe r will be given the name "lp". We will name our printe r"EPSON_C62". Press the key to continue .

  • Press the key to accep t the printe r name.

  • Congra t ul a t ions! You have setup your printe r . You can setup more printe r sif you like. We will choose option "Q" to quit Apsfilter . You can hit the key repea t e dly to exit Apsfilte r and get back to the DSL ControlPanel.

  • You are almost ready to print . Open a console window so tha t allapplica tions will recognize your printe r .

    Type "export PRINTER = E P S O N_C62" substi tu t ing the name of your printe rfor 'EPSON_C62 '

    Now you should be able to use your printe r in all applica tions .Congra t ul a t ions on set ting up your printe r!!

  • Now we need to star t the printe r daemon before we can print inapplica tions . Click on the "Printing/lpd" button to turn on the print daemon.

    If you are running a regula r hard drive install, you are done. If you arerunning from USB, CD or frugal install with the backup/ re s to r e featur e s ,there are a few more steps to complet e to save your printe r sett ings .

    THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTION S ARE FOR LIVE CD, USB andFRUGAL insta l l option s util iz in g the backu p/r e s t o r e featur e s .

  • Open the Emelfm file manage r and choose the "filetool.ls t" file in the /home/dsl direc tory. Choose the file and click the button.

  • In your filetool.ls t file you will want to add three ent ries . I have sepa r a t e dthem from the other s for illust ra t ion. The last entry must contain yourprinte r name. For our example , the ent ries would be as follows:

    opt/prin tcapopt/apsfil te r/var/spool/lpd/EPSO N_C62

  • Now we want to go to the /opt direc to ry in Emelfm to add some comman dsto the bootlocal.sh file. This file contains scripts you would like to run whenyour PC boots up. Choose the bootlocal.sh file and press the button.

  • We need to enter the same comand in bootlocal.sh that we ente r ed in theconsole earlie r . This will allow all apps to use your printe r without youhaving to ente r your printe r informat ion.

  • This is one more option you can add to bootlocal.sh if you would like theprinte r daemon to star t automa t ically at boot. As shown above, add /usr/sbin/lpd and save.
