WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF

CHRIST

PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

Page 2: how to handle temptation

James 1:12-16 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life

which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is

tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is

tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire

has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

II. REMEMBER THE WORDA. Ephesians 6:11-17 Put on the whole armor of

God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. {12} For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against prin cipalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. {13} Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. {14} Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, {15} and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; {16} above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. {17} And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

II. REMEMBER THE WORD

B. Matthew 4:4, 7, 10 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that pro ceeds from the mouth of God.'" .... Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'".... Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'

A. Matthew 26:41 "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

B. Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perse verance and supplication for all the saints;

IV. DON'T PLAY AROUND WITH TEMPTATION

A. Proverbs 1:10, 15 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent my son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path;

B. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits."

V. LOOK FOR THE WAY OF EXCAPE

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

VI. SUBSTITUE GOOD ACTIVITIES FOR THE BAD

YOU ONCE DID

Romans 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteous ness to God.

VII. LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF OTHERS

A. 1 Corinthians 10:6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted.

B. 2 Peter 3:14-18 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; {15} and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, >>>

VII. LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF OTHERS

{16} as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. {17} You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; {18} but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

VIII. REMEMBER YOUR COMMITMENT TO JESUS

Matthew 16:24-27 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. {25} "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. {26} "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? {27} "For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.
