1 - Plain cake with ribbon

Covering the board in sugarpaste is not essential but it does create an elegant look. Brush the board with a little cooled boiled water, then dust your work surface with icing sugar and colour approximately 250g of white sugarpaste with the Flamingo Pink food colouring. Roll out onto your surface, lift up and place onto the board, and then smooth over with a cake smoother for a professional finish.

Cut off any excess icing with a small palette knife and decorate the edge of the cake board with a 15mm pale pink ribbon, attaching it with double sided tape. If you prefer not to cover the board in icing, use a pink or coloured board to match the colour theme of your cake.

Knead and roll out approximately 750g of white sugarpaste large enough to cover the top and sides of your cake. Use a cake smoother to achieve a professional finish, and cut away the excess around the bottom of your cake. If you want to achieve a crisp look, use a Bellissimo cake smoother to create the sharp top edge. Carefully place a cake lifter or palette knife under the cake, lift and place on the covered board, attaching with a little royal icing.

Finish the cake by wrapping it with a pink satin ribbon tied in a bow.

2 - Plain flamingo cookies and cutter

Cut out enough cookies to sit around the sides of your cake using the flamingo cookie cutter. We have used five cookies for the sides, and one to sit on the top, but you can get creative and make as many as you like! Once baked, they are ready to decorate.

3 - Decorated flamingo cookies

Colour some more Sattina white sugarpaste with Flamingo Pink food colouring. Dust your work surface using a cornflour pouch or icing sugar and roll out your coloured paste. Using the flamingo cookie cutter once again, cut out flamingo shapes from the sugarpaste. Once cut, place your icing shapes carefully onto your cookies using some edible glue. Remember, you don’t have to use pink colouring...who said flamingos have to be pink?! If you’re making a cake for a baby shower for a mother who’s expecting a baby boy, you could use some baby blue colouring, or if the gender is still a mystery, you could opt for some yellow or peach – the choice is yours!

We have decorated our flamingos with their own unique designs. Some are patterned using the embossed mini rolling pins to create a hessian effect and a knitted effect, whilst others are decorated with small stars, polka-dots and stripes using the star plunger cutters, round plunger cutters and the multi ribbon cutter tool. To create the beak, we used the beak edge of the cutter, and the eyes were drawn on using the black edible ink pen. These cutters are so easy to use and make your designs look very effective!

4 - Decorated letters with push easy cutters

If you’re making this cake for a first birthday, you can use the incredibly versatile push easy alphabet cutters to put the baby’s name on the cake like we’ve done!

We then gave each letter its own unique design to match the flamingos, using the embossed rolling pins and cutters. There’s so much you can do with them, so get experimenting and create something beautiful!
