Get wild at Bakethin This short walk takes you to Bakethin Hide via a loop under Kielder Viaduct. The hide was designed and built by Newcastle University architecture students as part of our Art & Architecture programme. Looking out onto Bakethin Reservoir you are guaranteed to see some birdlife at any time of the year. Adders enjoy warming up in the sun on the banks of the old railway. Britain’s only venomous snake, they won’t do you any harm as long as you leave them well alone. Take a walk on the wild side! Our special forest clearing, near the osprey bench, has activities to help all of the family explore this environment a little bit differently. Bakethin pond, passed on this walk, is one place where you can get a bit closer to wildlife. This dragonfly nymph has got its eye on an unsuspecting tadpole for a tasty tea! Walk start

Forestclearing

Accessible toilet

Start from either Bakethin car park or the wildlife hide car park (limited spaces). Look out for the small detour to our special forest clearing (marked * on map). The route is well waymarked with brown ‘Wild Walk’ plaques (right). You can also download the route using the Viewranger app (see overleaf).

Bakethin HideThis short walk to our special wildlife hide and back is all on good paths and tracks. Suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.

There are information panels in the two 'pods' that make up the hide. They tell you about some of the birds and other wildlife you might look out for at different times of the year. There is nearly always something to see, whether it’s oystercatchers with their chicks on the island or ducks and geese on the water. The ‘Forest’ pod has a full length window with views of the forest floor, that gives you the chance to spot woodland birds and red squirrels.

Between April and August you may be lucky enough to see an osprey, either passing through from Kielder Water to nesting sites in the forest, or feeding in Bakethin Reservoir itself. Photo © North East Wildlife
