Introduction There is a silent epidemic going on in today’s world. People are working in jobs they hate while putting up a front that everything is all right, all the meanwhile secretly leading lives of quiet desperation. They want to break free of their work, yet feel enslaved to it because of the safety of the paycheck. But some on the other hand have been able to escape this kind of vicious cycle and have naturally found what they love to do and work seamlessly at it, getting paid for doing it as well. However, these kinds of people are too far and few in between. So are most people doomed to work at jobs they hate for the rest of their lives? To accept the status quo of working at jobs they hate during the weekdays only to enjoy their nights and weekends? That would be very sad considering the fact that work takes up a majority of our adult life so it only make sense to find work that we enjoy doing and get paid for doing it as well in order to make a living. That work will be different for each person and it is up to each one of us to take our own journey in order to find it. This book is for those who want to take that journey and in it will contain all the information necessary to help you get the most out of that journey in order to not only find the work you love doing, but to get paid for doing it as well. Do not be concerned if it seems like this book is short in length. I made sure to strip out all the excess fat and put in only the “meat” to ensure the very best material gets put in here and has the entire focus of the reader. The book was originally over 200 pages long but I reduced all the information so that the reader would not get overwhelmed by it and also made sure to create a simple, yet very logical and effective structure to work from that they could apply right away in their lives. Most books are just made of “filler” or they drown you with so much information and steps to take that it doesn’t do you any good at all after reading it. This book is nothing like that as you will soon see.

Chapter 1: An Overview of The Idea of Finding and Doing What You Love to Do

When people who have achieved great success in their lives are asked what they think was the major key involved in their success, you’ll begin to see one commonality float to the top and that is simply this: They loved what they were doing. It’s been heard over and over again by all the greats that you have to find what you love to do - you have to find what you’re passionate about and pursue it. "What I know is, is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come." - Oprah Winfrey "Do what you love. When you love your work, you become the best worker in the world." - Uri Geller "Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life." - Wayne Dyer “Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a day in your life”. - Harvey MacKay "To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth." - Pearl S. Buck "What we really want to do is what we are really meant to do. When we do what we are meant to do, money comes to us, doors open for us, we feel useful, and the work we do feels like play to us." - Julia Camero "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do." - Bob Dylan "You gotta love what you do. If you don’t love what you do, the chance for success is nil." - Donald Trump "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Albert Schweitzer

"What work I have done I have done because it has been play. If it had been work I shouldn’t have done it. Who was it who said, “Blessed is the man who has found his work?” Whoever it was he had the right idea in his mind. Mark you, he says his work—not somebody else’s work. The work that is really a man’s own work is play and not work at all. Cursed is the man who has found some other man’s work and cannot lose it. When we talk about the great workers of the world we really mean the great players of the world. The fellows who groan and sweat under the weary load of toil that they bear never can hope to do anything great. How can they when their souls are in a ferment of revolt against the employment of their hands and brains? The product of slavery, intellectual or physical, can never be great." - Mark Twain With all this advice being churned to the masses over and over again, the average person hears all this and gets extremely frustrated because it’s advice they hear ALL the time, but in which they get no proper direction or guidance on how to go about applying it in their own lives. It’s not enough to say – “Do what you love.” How do you find it? How do you find it exactly? How do you know you’ve found it? How do you get paid enough for doing it to make a living? It’s as if the whole world is dangling the keys to the door of success right in front of them but they don’t know how to get to it nor is anybody showing them how to do it. Add to that, many people think that everyone else is living this fabulous life, doing what they love to do when it’s exactly the opposite. Most people aren’t doing the kind of work they love. They hate their jobs. They view it as a necessary evil that they must endure. The truth is very few people will be able to find what they love to do and get paid for doing it. It’s a hard process, but one definitely worth going through, even it if takes a long time. So what’s a person to do now? Work 8 hours a day during the weekdays doing work they no longer enjoy just to make a living? That’s one way of looking at it. Some people can separate work and the rest of their lives and just look at it as a means to an end but it really depends on the individual.

Most people “fall into” a job or career and wake up after their life flashes them by and they have a midlife crisis. Because most jobs are systematic (as they must be in order for businesses to run successfully and profit), they feel like well oiled cogs in a machine that doesn’t allow for the expression of the creativity of the human spirit. But they feel like they have no choice. They have bills to pay, families to support, and needs that have to be satisfied. They feel like they’re stuck in Groundhog Day. How nice would it be to view your work as a blessing instead of a curse, instead of a necessary evil that you trudge through to enjoy your nights and weekends? How nice would it be if your work was an extension of yourself and your talents? How nice would it be to know and feel that you’re doing the work you were meant to do? Your work would fully harness your passion and talents and strengths and would in turn help others. This is what people want - to turn work into play. To love Mondays and hate Friday’s to a certain extent. This is the dream. If you’re happy at work, then that spills over in other areas of your life and helps your health, family, social relationships and overall happiness in general. The question then arises: If this path is so great, then why doesn’t everyone go on it? It’s simply because they can’t seem to find what they love to do. They don’t know where to start. There is no guide that was given and set in place in the educational system. And even if they do find it, they don’t know how to monetize it. Nobody is handing out a roadmap. Instead, it’s just advice in the form of a bunch of platitudes like asking yourself what you would do if you had a million dollars. And even if they try to look while doing their current job, it’s really hard as people are too tired to do anything after work and fall into the deadly trap of routine and complacency.

Then there are those who refuse to give up and search for it while society pokes fun at them for not following the “way” - the “way” of just working at jobs you hate to make a living – accepting it as a fact of life. It’s the journey of finding what you love to do and getting paid for it while paying for living expenses without getting into huge financial trouble that seems to be the big obstacle for most people. But you’ll find that the journey is well worth it despite the obstacles you’ll encounter within it. It WILL take time but you’ll find that you will gladly go through all the obstacles to finally find what you love doing and get paid for doing it. This has become the journey not talked about, but the one that’s on everyone’s minds. More and more people do not want to become part of the “system” and want to offer something much more from within themselves instead of being part of somebody else’s machine. It’s a certain joy that can’t be expressed in words when we finally find what we love to do and we do it, knowing that it helps others and get financially rewarded for it as well. It FEELS right. The work is meaningful, we self actualize, we get the most out of ourselves and we deliver the most value we can to other people enriching our lives and those around us at the same time. Work comprises a majority of our life and the effects will undoubtedly spill over into other areas of it. If we are unhappy at work, it will begin to manifest in other areas of our life. But if you find yourself loving your work, you’ll have less stress. You’ll be healthier. Happier. And you’ll tend to make more money because when you find what you love to do and you keep on doing it, you get good at it and you become an expert at it. And people pay good money for expertise. Having more money will give you the freedom to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Your self esteem will shoot through the roof and you’ll become very confident naturally. It will give you purpose and structure to life, releasing your full potential, and your entire being will open up to serve your natural strengths to mankind.

There will be no “blockage”. You will learn so much about yourself, confront your weaknesses, and stimulate your creativity. You will whet your appetite for learning and develop great problem solving skills. Everything will feel right, balanced, and harmonious. Mind and body will all be united, connected, working toward one focal point, You can feel like you make a difference, advance your work, and inspire others. Your confidence will go up as you realize how gifted and talented you are. You become more confident to take advantage of opportunities as they arise AND you become more aware of spotting them. You begin to unleash your full human potential. Instead of being part of a system, you create the system. You get peace of mind and become joyful doing what you love to do and everything will feel like it all falls into place just for you. When you love your work, it’s as if your entire being unifies and comes alive and you find the best use for all your talents and abilities. And there’s nothing that gives you a confidence boost than knowing that you are good at what you do and that many people are benefiting from it. You become content with yourself so that in turn makes it easier for you to enjoy rewarding relationships with others. You have to do what YOU want, not what others ask of you. Not your friends, siblings, parents, etc. YOU. What YOU want because you know yourself the best. When you find what you love to do, some things that you considered important before will seem so trivial. That’s because you’re uploading what YOU believe in, what YOU value, rather than taking in somebody else’s belief and value system. You will feel an energy you’ve never felt before, enthusiasm, something that no motivational speaker can provide because it comes from within. And that single source of energy is one of the most potent in the universe. Your excitement. Your energy. Your passion. What you love doing. You will wake up energized and look forward to what lies ahead for the day.

When it’s all said and done, the bottom line is simply this: If you have to work (which you must in order to survive), you might as well be doing the kind of work you love to do and get paid for doing it as well.

Chapter 2: Why It’s So Hard For People to Find What They Love to Do

Why is it that some people are having such a hard time finding what they love to do? There’s a number of reasons. The most obvious one is that they simply don’t believe that it’s possible and all this does is close their eyes to the opportunities around them. Work is something you will hate doing. That’s why it’s called work they say. But there are those who believe that’s not true and set out to find the work they love, but they lose motivation along the way as time passes on. Then there are those who believe they can find what they love to do and get paid for doing it, but they don’t do anything about it. It’s too hard they say. Still some want to find out so they ask around, but get discouraged by the negativity of the subject surrounding it. “Work sucks. Just do it and get paid.” “Nobody likes working. It’s just something you have to do to pay the bills.” “It’s a myth. You can’t really find what you love to do because you’ll eventually hate doing it after a while.” Then there are those who still want to find it, even after all that, but simply don’t know where to start. This is probably the position the majority of people are in. And it’s pretty easy to see why this is all happening. The education system didn’t really help in this department. When you were young, you were naturally curious about things. Your desire to learn was strong. You took risks, did not fear change, but then you were gently nudged to start accepting the status quo. Your own individual goals were challenged as well as your creativity. You were encouraged to conform. Learning was made up of memorizing and regurgitating back information to the teacher. And you hated doing it. As a result, you developed a negative attitude to learning in general.

13

If you ran counter intuitive to the “way”, you were admonished for being different. So you went along with the system, further distancing yourself from yourself, not really taking the time to take stock of yourself. By the time you finished your education, you continued to follow direction from those around you in charge, putting yourself further and further away from your heart’s true desires. You kept on looking outside yourself to find what would fit you, never looking within to see what you had FIRST and building from there. What’s more, people aren’t patient. They don’t develop long term perspective and conclude it’s not possible after trying to find what they love to do for a week. So they get stuck in their job and the cycle, the routine, the inherent dissatisfaction starts to set in but they feel trapped. The routine dulls their senses and they feel like they have no time, there’s no drive, and they inevitably get trapped in the safety net of their job. Some lie back and accept that this is how life is like but some still want to get out of it and find work they love doing. But on the way to finding it, some run into a brick wall and they don’t overcome it. Still some try to seek out information on how to find what they love to do but they don’t even apply the info they read because let’s face it - the information out there doesn’t really help that much at all. It’s vague advice such as take x,y,z personality test, the “do something, anything and you’ll figure it out eventually” approach, just do what interests you, read books, “open yourself to the universe”, etc. And if you want to go more in depth with the type of books out there, there are the “Feel Good Type” books. These books don’t give you any specific, concrete advice on how to find what you love to do. They’re more like “just find your passion”. That’s it. While these books are good for inspiration, they’re of no use when it comes to practical application. Then there’s the “One Dimensional” type of books. Take this personality type test and you’ll find your passion. While personality is an important component, it’s not everything. Sometimes it’s accurate, but you can’t peg people down as a certain type. We are all different.

Then there’s the “here’s 10 million exercises” type books, and while they mean well, chances are few that the reader will actually do them. The best kind of combination is the inspirational type book coupled with the practical advice type book that has just the meat that the reader needs and that’s exactly what lies ahead in the next chapter.

Chapter 3: How to Finally Find What You Love to Do “Each man has his own vocation. This talent is the call. He inclines to do something which is easy to him and good when it is done, but which no other man can do. He has no rival. For the more truly he consults his own powers, the more difference will his work exhibit from the work of any other.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson “Where your talents and the world’s needs cross, there lies your vocation" - Aristotle “Man is happy only as he finds work worth doing --- and does it well.” – E. Merrill Root This is by far the longest chapter of the book for obvious reasons. The previous chapters were written to set the foundation for this process, to fire you up, and to get a better understanding of the blockades surrounding this journey. We discussed:

- why there is a need to find what you love to do - how it helps enrich your life - why it’s so hard to find it.

Those chapters were meant to get a grip of the whole process, to understand why it’s so difficult, to get that desire to find what you love to do going and then to give you the belief that it’s possible to find it and get paid for doing it. You have to believe. This chapter will help you to believe by giving you practical, real world advice you can apply right now in your life. Now it’s time to simply find what you love to do once and for all. Obviously this book can’t tell every person what they love directly because the answer will be different for every person. It can only show you the way on how to find it. Before I go any further, I just want to briefly discuss how the following protocol on finding what you love to do and getting paid for it was created. I researched just about every article and book on the subject and took down careful notes on all of them over the course of 6 months and the result was over 400 pages of information.

Page 16: How to Find What You Love to Do and DO IT - Brian Kim.netbriankim.net/books/download/FINALLY Find What You Love To Do And... · How to Finally Find What You Love to Do and Get Paid

16

I looked to see what the common threads were in all of this material. I looked to see what the real “meat” was. I sought to trim the “fat” so that only the real, practical advice that would be applicable by anyone that would deliver real results would be left behind. In addition, I’ve interviewed several people who have found what they love to do and traced their journey from start to present, trying to discover how they came about discovering what they loved to do and getting paid for it. I combined those findings with my initial research and then looked for commonalities again. I looked for the “meat” and trimmed the fat once more, and then applied my own logic and reasoning to create a very easy, yet logical and effective structure that anybody can apply to finally find what they love to do and get paid for doing it. Below are the results of that entire process. The first logical step to finding what you love to do is very simple. 1. BELIEVE THAT IT’S POSSIBLE. Distance yourself from people who say that it’s not. Read the stories of those who have found what they love to do and have made money doing it. The bonus report that I’ve created along with this book contains information such as that. Realize that you can have what they have too – if you can only summon up the courage to take the journey. 2. GET FOCUSED Clear all the clutter from your life and strip it down to the very basics. Go through your entire residence and start collecting the things you don’t need anymore. Donate the things you don’t need. Hold a garage sale to make some extra money too. Get organized. Put everything into boxes. Really clear the clutter and space from your life until you find yourself with the bare essentials and the things that are truly important to you. It’s vital to remember to keep the things that are truly important to you as you’ll soon see. Also, get your finances in order. Start saving and trimming you’re your budget. This will help finance your journey as well.

17

All of this is done in order to mentally “wipe” the slate clean so that the only thing to focus on the table is finding what you love to do and getting paid for it. 3. INTROSPECT Now that you have the correct mindset and your environment is free from any type of clutter and distraction, it’s time to look within.

Before I go on, please note that one of the MOST CRUCIAL parts of introspection is WRITING. YOU MUST WRITE. I will have some small exercises that REQUIRE you to write and again, it is something you MUST do.

I know you’ve heard it a billion times and it’s so cliché but there’s a reason for this.

Writing things down allows you to easily make connections you’ve never thought of before because you see it on paper. It also allows you to “free room” in your brain for other thoughts because they are put in another container so to speak.

If I ask you, what’s 257 times 852, try doing that in your head vs. writing it down. When you write it down, the answer comes out easier, not to mention more accurate.

We are going to introspect in order to uncover some information on the following three categories: We will introspect the first two categories in this chapter and the third category in the next.

1. Talents 2. Passions 3. Needs

Remember – WRITE. If you try to answer the questions in your head, you won’t come up with all that much and get discouraged. You need to empty your mind through writing to come up with more possibilities. WRITE. Now, let’s briefly discuss each category.

Talents are something that you are naturally good at that you enjoy doing. Passions are simply subjects that really, really interest you, that fascinate, stimulate, captivate, enthrall and excite you. Needs is going to cover how you can fulfill other people’s needs and this is how you will make money doing what you love to do. All 3 categories are important and any deficiency in any category can prove to be limiting to what you ultimately want to do. For example, if your talents are lacking, but you have needs and passions covered, there’s nothing really separating you that much from the person next to you. This is the case a lot of people find themselves in. For example, some people have a passion for acting or playing an instrument and they can fulfill people’s needs for entertainment, but they don’t have the talent to back it up. They can try very hard and maybe make it, but if they had the talent, it would be a lot easier to achieve their goal of doing what they love to do and getting paid for it. Not having talents is like fitting a square peg into a round hole. If you have talents and needs filled, but no passion, you won’t be motivated to do anything. You’ll be bored, apathetic, feel empty, trapped, there won’t be any zing to your work. You’ll feel drained at the end of the day after working. If you have talents and passion, but no needs fulfilled, it will be really difficult to make money doing what you love to do as it will tend to be something self fulfilling. Your talents are like tools and your passion is akin to high energy. You can have all the energy (passion) in the world to chop down a tree to fulfill the need of supplying lumber but if you don’t have the right tools (talents), namely a saw or an axe, and instead use a small, dull pocketknife, it will take a very, very long time to cut down that tree. If you have the right tools (talents), but very little or no energy at all (low passion), then you simply won’t feel motivated to cut down the tree to fulfill the needs of others. You’ll do it to survive but it will leave you feeling very, very tired and bored. However, if you have the right tools (talents) and the high energy (passion) harnessed to fulfill the needs of others, you’ll be very effective at doing what you do.

You may be wondering why we are only focusing on talents and passion when other books that deal with helping you find what you love to do advocate doing so many other things like: - Describing your ideal work day. - Describing your ideal work environment. - The kind of company you want to work for. - How much money you want to make. - What kind of personality you have, etc. This only exacerbates the problem because it bombards people with so much advice and what’s more, that advice doesn’t help. All that stuff is like seasoning. You want the meat. Then the seasoning will help. Just having seasoning doesn’t result in anything of nutritional value. That kind of advice is only useful AFTER the fact, the fact being that you find what you love to do. It’s like sculpting, but it only helps if you find the structure first. Your talents and passions lie at the core of doing what you love to do. Once you determine what you really love to do, the rest of the stuff- environment, personality, pay, etc., is just a matter of fitting all that around that discovered structure. Let’s go on to identify your talents and passions. Talents Talents are something that you’re naturally good at and enjoy doing, and are fascinated by doing, which you didn’t necessarily have to learn. You want to focus on identifying and developing your talents first because this is what will separate you from the rest of the pack. If you think about what differentiates people from one another when it comes to work, it comes down to a small group of things. Talents, skills, and interest level. People are interested in different things so that right there automatically starts to divide the masses. Now within a given subject of interest, skill further divides that group and filters it to produce a number of people who not only have passion for the given subject, but the skills to back it up.

For example, let’s say the interest lies in cars. Not everybody is interested in cars so that narrows the entire pool down to a smaller group of people who like cars. Now within all the people interested in cars, you only have some that have skills related to cars, such as repairing them, adding on components, basic maintenance, etc. This further “filters” the crowd. Now within that subset group of people who have the passion for cars and the skills related to them, you have people who are extremely talented when it comes to cars. For example, they just “know” how to fix cars, can intuitively feel what’s wrong with a car, know how to make a car look aesthetically pleasing, etc. These are the cream of the crop. Don’t get me wrong, having passion and skills will take you a long way. But most people don’t even have that. They just pick up skills and use them in areas they have no passion for. Sure, they can pick up a paycheck by going down that route, but they will never be great at what they do. Those that can identify and harness their talents and couple them with skills in a given area of passionate interest – they have what it takes to be great. To identify your talents, I’ve composed a list of 10 introspective questions. For each of the following questions, I want you to write at least 20 answers that come to mind. That’s right. 20. Don’t be afraid if you see variations of the same talent coming up. That will probably be the case. Just empty your mind. Use your logic and conscious mind. You will also be using your subconscious as well in the future as you’ll soon see but more on that later. Use one full blank sheet of paper for each question. You want to give yourself as much room as possible to write down all the answers you can think of for each question.

Questions To Ask Yourself to Identify Your Talents

1. What are some things you’re frequently complimented on and praised for?

2. Point blank, ask yourself what you’ve always thought you’re good at?

3. What activities do you engage in that bring you the most satisfaction?

4. What kind of things were you told you do better than others that come easily to you?

5. When did you achieve results that exceeded your/others expectations?

6. What are some things you’ve done that have made you feel proud?

7. Ask 10 people who know you well what they think your talents are. (They have an ability to see in you what you easily take for granted and I bet that you can probably see what others excel in clearly too.) 8. What makes you animated and lights you up? 9. What do you most enjoy doing for others? 10. On what productive task, do you spend a lot of time, while enjoying the process? *Please note that you can print out a list of all the introspective questions in the workbook provided along with this book. If you find yourself at a loss for articulating what your talents may be, you can also look scientifically to see what they might be by taking a Myer Briggs Personality type test. Type in “Myer Briggs Personality Test” in a search engine and take the test to see what the results are for you. It may help shed some light as to how you can articulate what you know about yourself in terms of what you’re talented at.

The great thing about all this is once you start identifying what your talents are, the more you can start “branching out” and start discovering other hidden talents that come as natural byproducts of the ones you’ve found.

Answering these kinds of questions about yourself will be hard to do at first, simply because it’s something that people haven’t really done their entire lives – taking stock of themselves.

Just do the best you can for now.

How to Answer the Questions The first step taken was determining exactly which questions to ask by sifting through all the millions of questions that other books have thrown at people when deciding how to find what they love to do and pinpointing the root questions needed that make up the “meat” of the answer. It’s important to create a solid, simple structure that’s logical enough to provide a framework people can work off from. We’ve devised the structure by just focusing on two root causes that lie at the core of doing what you love – talents and passions and coming up with a list of definitive questions that can help identify each of them respectively. The second step is to answer the questions for each root cause consciously, meaning rack your brain as hard as you can to find the answers. Use pure brain power. When you start answering each question, the first 10 answers that come up will probably be easy. The next 5 will take time. And the rest of the 5 will take some considerable effort but therein lies the best answers toward the end – the ones buried deep in your mind. Don’t try to do all the questions in one day. Space them out. Try doing 5 questions per day because remember, you have to think of 20 answers for each question and it can get pretty mentally draining trying to answer all of them in one day. Take breaks in between questions too. BUT stay with each question until you hit the full 20 answers. Crank your conscious mind for all it’s worth. After you answer all 10 questions, look over the 10 questions and the answers you’ve written and let all that simmer and marinade in your mind. Take time off from your journey and just get busy with other things, but keep those questions and answers in the back of your mind and start looking for flashes of insight during your day to day activities.

What will happen is that your mind will suddenly start “filtering” your environment to help you find more answers to the questions, answers that you couldn’t think of when you tried to answer them at first consciously. It’s the same mechanism behind spotting the car you own or really want on the road all the time. It looks like you see it everywhere, when in reality, it was always there – it’s just that your focus is NOW locked onto it. These answers, these “flashes of insight’, these “ah ha” answers, are probably your best ones or at the very least, the ones that will give you fresh insight and perspective that you never had before. So remember that after answering all the questions, for the rest of the week, just review the questions and answers and ponder over them. Keep them in your mind for the next full week or two. When you get a flash of insight, when you engage a serendipitous moment with someone, when you remember something, when you realize something and you figure out an answer to one of those questions, RECORD IT. It may come when you’re taking a shower, driving your car, walking your dog, talking to friends, etc. When it comes, you’ll recognize it and remember NOT to forget it. Write it down. Record it. It makes up some of your best answers. Write it down on a bar napkin. Record a voice memo on your cell phone. Scribble it on the back of a receipt. Borrow a pen or pencil from somebody and write it on your hand. Do anything to RECORD IT. After you’ve written down all your answers that came from your conscious and subconscious mind, you’re going to have a pretty large list and you’re probably going to see repeating patterns of talents and passions within it. We now have to “trim” the list.

Narrowing Down The List Now, you’ll have about 200+ answers to sift through (due to your answers from the conscious and subconscious). According to the Pareto Principle, about 20% of your answers will make up 80% - the vast majority of them. For those who are unfamiliar with the Pareto Principle, here’s a quick summary about it. The Pareto Principle (also known as the 80/20 rule) was created by Italian mathematician Vilfredo Pareto in order to describe the unequal distribution of wealth in his country. In short, it can summarized as “the vital few and trivial many”. 20% of something is always responsible for 80% of the results. In his study, he realized that 20% of the people in his country possessed 80% of the total wealth of the country. In this case, when we apply the Pareto Principle to our answers, about 40 of your answers (20% of 200+) will be commonly found in all 200+ of your answers. The rest of the answers are “outliers” if you will - answers that exist way off the graph by their lone self. Find those 40 answers by seeing which ones can be commonly found popping up out of all 200+ answers. Now of those 40 answers, we are going to group them and break them down into 10 main talents. In other words, we are going to utilize the Pareto Principle again and break down 25% of 40, which is 10 (I would use 20% again but that would make the end result come out to 8 answers and 10 just sounds much more complete.). These 10 main talents are the ones that make up your core competencies. When you do this, it will help clarify what you’re really strong and capable at – things you can use when you go on a job interview or when you write your resume.

Signs You’ve Found Your Talents

Look over your final list of 10 talents and verify whether or not you think the talents you have are actual talents by asking yourself the following questions about them.

1. Do your talents come easily to you? 2. Do they easily produce above average results? 3. Do others around you tend to praise you for your talents? 4. Do you enjoy utilizing them? 5. Do you look forward to using them? 6. Do you seem to lose track of time when utilizing your

talents? 7. Do you seem to get better and better at using your talents?

One of the biggest signs that you’ve found your talents is that it will probably be something that’s been right in front of you this entire time. It’s often easily overlooked because we give it so little effort or thought to use and because of that, we don’t really take note of it as a talent. You rarely notice it at first because it’s so natural. It’s a part of you. Often we need feedback from others to realize just how special the things we do really are. Even if your talents might seem very mundane and regular to you, it may very well be helpful to others simply because they don’t have them. For example, it may be a piece of cake for you to engage others in conversation but for others, it may be like rocket science. Never underestimate the abilities you have and never take them for granted. Now that we know what our core talents are, we have to apply them to what we are passionate about but we first have to discover exactly what those passions are.

How to Identify Your Passions

We are going to use the same approach here to discover our passions. Questions are the answers again so follow the exact same protocol here.

20 answers for each question.

Again, don’t be afraid if you see variations of the same things coming out.

Questions To Ask Yourself to Identify Your Passions

1. What are you especially curious about? 2. What can you spend hours on talking about to your friends? 3. What kind of conversation subjects do you find yourself

gravitating toward at a party that fascinates you so much that you want to hang around and listen?

4. What kind of subjects do you find yourself gravitating toward in the bookstores and what kind of books do you keep at home?

5. What do you tend to hold on to?

Narrowing It Down The reason why this section only has 5 questions to answer is that it’s just used to identify our passions – our main ones only. Now you’re going to have 100 answers. Of those 100 answers, we apply the Pareto Principle and we are left with 20. Find 20 answers that make up the majority of the 100 answers you’ve listed. We’re going to narrow it down again by applying the Pareto Principle once more. Of those 20 answers, we are going to group them to pick 4 main passions. 4 answers that make up the majority of the 20. Ideally, you want to pick ONE. That way, you can gain considerable leverage. But it can be quite possible to fuse a couple of passions together in an innovative way to create a brand new one, but if you focus on one passion, you can learn more about it and become more effective at pursuing it than splitting your focus among many of them.

Signs You’ve Found Your Passions Below is a list of signs that you can use to see if the subjects you think you’re passionate about are ones that you are indeed passionate about.

1. Look to the level of effort you put into understand about the subjects that interest you. The higher the effort, the higher the passion.

2. Does it energize you just thinking about it? 3. Do you get excited when the subject is brought up by

others? 4. Are you naturally curious about it and want to learn more

about it? 5. Do you spend a lot of your free time with the subject you’re

interested in? 6. Do you like talking about it to other people? 7. Has your interest always been there for the longest time?

The most important thing to remember is that you feel you have that natural fuel when it comes thinking about the subject you’re passionate about because it’s that excitement, that energy, that natural fuel that will keep you going through the tough times. Remember that talents are the tools and passion is the energy needed to make use of those tools. Now all you need is to utilize both to fulfill the needs of others. The Two Things You Should Have At The End of This Chapter 1. A list of your top 10 talents which make up your core competencies. 2. A list of 4 of your passions in descending order, with the first being the one you’re most passionate about.

Chapter 4: How to Get Paid For Doing What You Love to Do Now that you’ve found what you love to do, you’ve got to find a way to get paid for doing it. Since what everybody loves doing is so different, we have to provide an all encompassing structure that all people can use to guide them on how they can make money doing what they love to do. In order to provide that structure, we have to go deeper to understand exactly what we’re talking about and that is simply this: We’re looking to FILL gaps. That gap can be in knowledge, time, resources, or in any other conceivable area. The bigger the gap, the more money you can make. Think of some of the highest paid professions and you’ll see this principle in play. We get paid for filling the gap that others can’t or don’t want to fill themselves. Your job is to clarify what that gap is and find and sell the filling of that gap to others who want/need it by utilizing your talents and passion. Let’s face it – the lowest paying jobs are the things that anybody can do. But when you play from YOUR specific talents aligned with YOUR passions – you carve yourself from the masses and greatly reduce the competition and at the same time, can command a higher potential income. A lot of people hear the advice of “follow your passion”. Yet people do that and they don’t make a lot of money. That’s because they’re missing the other part of the equation – looking to see how they can utilize their talents to fill the gaps. They work in companies that share the same passion as they do, but they do jobs that any other person can do so they get paid very little. When you can utilize your talents to fill gaps, that’s when you can really start making money.

Route #1: Getting Paid as an Employee If you wish to work as an employee, the first step to do would be to search for a company that shares your passion. If your passion is health, you could work for a company that makes health supplements, promotes exercising, a local gym etc. If you’re passionate about personal finance, you can work for a company that helps people manage their money, get out of credit card debt, etc. If you find yourself with 4 core passions and can’t decide which one to pursue, which one to utilize your talents around, see if you can’t combine some of your passions. If not, then choose the first one from your list and start from there. You can always switch later on down the road. Step 1: What kind of companies/businesses/organizations out there share my selected passion(s)? Come up with a list (no limit) to ALL companies that are nearby you that fit your passion. If you have that, you’ve already got a leg up on the competition. Companies know that if employees share the same passions as the company itself, in other words, the employees don’t just view their job as a job, it’s much more attractive to them in terms of hiring, training, and helping them move up the ladder. Now, it’s not enough to share the same passion as the company. You have to help them by leveraging your talents. Take out your list of 10 main talents and see what kind of gaps you can fill by first looking at the jobs offered within the company. Step 2: Looking for jobs offered (and not yet offered) within the company Look for job listings within the company to see anything that catches your eye, jobs that you know you might do well with your talents. I’m not going to go in detail on how to do this because I think it’s common sense as the usual applies – job search engines, monster.com, classified, newspaper ads, word of mouth, etc. Tell all the people you know that you’re looking for a job with this particular type of company that matches your passions.

Page 30: How to Find What You Love to Do and DO IT - Brian Kim.netbriankim.net/books/download/FINALLY Find What You Love To Do And... · How to Finally Find What You Love to Do and Get Paid

You can also “create” a job that you can pitch to a company that’s specifically tailored around the talents you have to offer and how they help fulfill the needs of the company. Don’t trap yourself into thinking the only jobs that are out there are the ones that are advertised. If you can create one that adds real value, companies will be willing to listen to you but in order to do that, you need to get your paperwork set up and that’s Step 3. Step 3: Preparing the Cover Letter, Resume, and for the Interview When you find or create some positions that you think you can do well in given your list of 10 talents, it’s time to prepare the good old cover letter and resume as well as prepare for the interview. Questions are the answers again so we’re going to use that same approach. Use the same framework as before in the last chapter when answering the questions (use the conscious and then the subconscious). Write down twenty answers for each question and then let the questions and answers simmer in your mind for a week or two and keep track of any flashes of insights that appear from your subconscious. These are the most valuable answers. Don’t let them slip away. Please note that you’re going to need your compiled list of your talents and passions by your side for this exercise. What you’re looking for is a “sweet spot”. Something that incorporates your talents and passions aligned with the needs of the company.

Questions to Ask 1. What kind of gaps can I fill for organizations that share my passion while using my talents? 2. How can I add value to organizations that share my passion while using my talents? 3. What kind of needs do I see with organizations that share my passions that I can help fulfill with the use of my talents? 4. What can I do to help organizations that share my passions using my talents? 5. How can organizations that share my passions benefit from the talents I have to offer? Remember, it’s not enough to share the company’s enthusiasm and passion. You have to find a way to leverage your talents in order to help that company to help meet their needs. Answering these questions is great because they can help craft your cover letter and resume and prepare you for the job interview. - Be clear, persuasive, sell the benefits you have to offer and express the passion you share with the company. - Dictate how you can fill gaps, add/create value to the company by utilizing your talents you have discovered through self reflection. Try to use past examples to demonstrate how you’ve used your talents to help others and/or organizations.

- Your passion should drive your creativity and have that x factor element show up in the interview where you can showcase your talents.

But sometimes, it’s not even enough to be passionate and to have the talents.

You might need what I call “hard skills” and in order to do that, you might have to get training to acquire them.

Let your passion drive you to acquire those “hard skills”. Talents alone are great but in order for them to be sometimes FULLY maximized, they sometimes have to be complemented with “hard” and “soft” skills. Hard skills are things like computer skills, web design, proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Access, any sort certification that’s required, technical training, etc.

Page 32: How to Find What You Love to Do and DO IT - Brian Kim.netbriankim.net/books/download/FINALLY Find What You Love To Do And... · How to Finally Find What You Love to Do and Get Paid

Soft skills would be interpersonal communication, building rapport with people, knowing how to deal with people in general, etc. If you have hard and soft skills coupled with your talents that you can use to fill gaps within the company you’re working for that shares the same passion as you, that’s your sweet spot right there.

1. Find a company that share same passion. 2. See what kind of gaps you can fill with your talents. See

how you can add/create value for the company. 3. Assess what hard and soft skills you will need and make a

list of them and try to acquire them. 4. Demonstrate your passion and talents and skills in your

resume and interview (use examples to back them up) to increase your chances of getting hired.

But what if you don’t want to work as an employee? Then you go onto the second route. The route of the entrepreneur.

Route #2: Getting Paid as an Entrepreneur Now let’s say you can’t find a company that shares your exact passion or you simply don’t want to work for somebody else and want to become your own boss. In that case, the protocol is a bit different. Instead of helping companies fulfill their needs, fill their gaps, help add/create value to the company itself, you’re going to do all that directly to people. Step 1: Figure Out What You Can Offer In Order to Serve Others Directly Based on Your Talents and Passions Questions are the answers again. 1. How can I add value directly to people with regard to what I’m passionate about while utilizing my talents? 2. How can I create value for people with regard to what I’m passionate about while utilizing my talents? 3. What kind of gaps can I fill for people with regard to what I’m passionate about while utilizing my talents? 4. What kind of needs do I see that people have with regard to my passions that I can help with my talents? 5. What can I do to help people who share my passions using my talents? 6. How can people who share my passions benefit from the talents I have to offer? 7. How can I utilize my talents in order to serve the needs of others? Use your conscious mind to answer these questions. Try to think of at least 20 answers for each question. Use the same protocol that you used to answer the questions about your talents (i.e. – don’t answer all of them in a day, stick with one question until you get all 20 answers, etc). After you answer all these questions consciously, just look over the questions and answers for the next two weeks and let that all simmer in your mind and wait for the flashes of insight from your subconscious mind. Dwell in the myriad of possibilities that can happen- just fantasize, forget about limits, see what can be.

Envision the possibilities. Utilize your creativity. “Catch” any ideas that come about regarding the kind of work you think you would love to do. Remember to write down any flashes of insight you get from your subconscious. They will probably be your best ones in terms of coming up with a great business idea. The key to making money as an entrepreneur is to figure out how you can serve others by leveraging your talents and passions to either fill gaps, add and/or create value to people directly. Here are some other ideas on how you can make money doing what you love:

- Teach others to do what you love

- Write about what you love

- Speak about what you love

- Create a product related to what you love

- Sell what you love

- Promote what you love

Step 2: Figure Out Who Needs or Wants Your Services Now that you’ve figured out how you can fill gaps, add and/or create value to people directly, you’re going to have to figure out exactly who wants or needs your products and/or services. Think of who your perfect client would be. Think of organizations that might benefit from what you have to offer. Think of who would benefit most from what you have to offer. Once you have an ideal client in mind, it’s time to contact them to let them know what you have to offer.

Step 3: Figure Out How You Can Contact Them Directly It’s not enough to know who your perfect client would be. You have to know how to get in touch with them directly. This is key. They’ll never know you exist if you don’t. Marketing is one of the biggest obstacles entrepreneurs invariably face because it’s something that not many people have experience with – especially if they’ve only worked as an employee. As an employee, you’re able to have a job because marketing is already done for you. The company is advertising its products and services and because it’s able to make money due to that kind of marketing, it needs to hire employees to work within the system to manage all the functions that need to be taken care of. Unless you’ve worked directly in marketing, you don’t appreciate how difficult this area is and you tend to take it for granted. Because what everyone is offering is different for each person, it’s hard for me to give detailed information on how to find people/organizations who will benefit from your products/services. But again, questions are the answers so try asking yourself the following in order to discover how you can find the people who will most benefit from what you have to offer:

1. Where can I find the people/organizations who will benefit from what I have to offer?

2. How can I contact them directly? Step 4: Figure Out How You Can Convince Them That you Can Do It For Them Once you have a select audience to market to, you have one last hurdle to cross and that is selling. Marketing and sales go hand in hand. They are two sides of the same coin. How can you convince them that you can help them? There are a number of ways. The first and probably the best way is to give away your products and services away for free for a trial period. Obviously, you’re not going to do this the entire time. Otherwise there’d be no way for you to make money. The idea behind free is that it gets your foot in the door. You have a chance to showcase what you can do and if you do it well, then you can get leverage.

Leverage in terms testimonials, potential clients, introductions to other potential clients from satisfied clients, etc. What’s more, the word “free” tends to attract people. It puts you on the map so more people will know about what you have to offer. Become excellent at what you do and show people that. Be the best. What this does is creates opportunities as people begin to see that you can fill the gap. Some other things to remember when selling: 1. Answer the question of “What’s in it for me?” for those people you’re trying to help. Be CLEAR as to what you’re doing for them. Stress benefits. 2. Develop a USP (unique service proposition). This is probably one of the best things you can do. Developing a USP involves coming up with one or two distinct factors that separate you from the rest of the competition. Some examples of famous USPs: “Pizza delivered fresh to your doorstep in 30 minutes or less.” – Domino’s Pizza. “The Low Price Leader” – Wal Mart “We try harder.” - Avis Try to come up with one clear sentence that incorporates your USP that answers the question of what you can do for people succinctly. This will help you cut to the chase when selling your products/services to potential clients. 3. Be sincere and have a genuine interest in your clients. Listen to them and see what kind of other needs they might require to be filled. When you do the best you can for them and do a damn good job at it, they will gladly help with your marketing by referring you to others, helping you save time and money that you would otherwise spend trying to find and convince new clients. In essence, what you’re looking for you to develop expertise so you can fill the gap and create value for people so they don’t have to do it.

Don’t focus on making money – focus on providing the best possible product and/or service to the people who really need it utilizing your talents focused around your area of passionate interest.

Leverage your talents aligned with your passions to create a product or service that you can sell to increasing numbers of people to free yourself from the cycle of trading time for money.

Creativity plays a big part here. There are no structures here. You’re going to have to come up with one that fits your unique work.

Remember, if you love what you’re doing, you’ll do it more often and easily and get better and better at it. At the same time, the value you can give others will grow exponentially.

And if you’re worried about starting your own business, don’t worry. Harnessing your talents and passions and focusing them on fulfilling other people’s needs will be more than enough you need to start and continue on through the journey. A Couple of Things to Remember - Know that this process WILL take time. Even though you identify what you love to do, it may take some time before you can develop it enough to monetize and become an expert at it. So long as you establish direction and go toward it, you’ll be fine. Don’t quit too soon when it looks like there’s nothing to gain from it. Try going one step further. It’s sometimes right there but people don’t do take it - they don’t trust themselves to take that one extra step. They cease to look past the superficial and see what’s there lying underneath. It will probably take at least a year before you see substantial financial returns. - One of the most important things is having this belief: Having the faith that it will all work out, that the path will be shown to you, so long as you stick to the path. Take it step by step. The step you’re taking now, when completed will contain everything you need to move onto the next step and on and on and on.

The more steps you take, the more momentum you create. The more resources you gather, the more knowledge you intake, and the more contacts you make. As you keep progressing, it gets easier and easier to do things because you can leverage all the things you’ve gathered along the way to get things done faster. - Know what your core competencies (talents) are and become amazing at them. Talents are the main things that separate you from the rest of the masses. Develop them and becoming amazing at them and you separate yourself even more. Also, remember that your passions anchor your work. Talents are useless unless they are centered around a subject of interest. Only in that way can you actually get “better”, in terms of more knowledge, contacts, leverage etc. For example, if you’re talented at coordination and event planning and you’re passionate about weddings, you should center those talents around that subject of interest and not utilize them for other events because if you continue to focus on weddings alone, there’s so much you can learn and get done quicker. You can develop systems easily, contacts for wedding merchandise and service discounts, know what things to look out for, mistakes to avoid, etc., - all that which you never would’ve gotten had your focus been scattered among many different types of events instead of just wedding events. - Don’t forget to learn “soft” and “hard” skills as they help maximize your full potential. To get an exact idea of how to maximize your full potential, we can attribute numerical values to talents, passion, and skills on a scale of 1-10 for each one of them. If you identify exactly what your talents are and you become amazing at them, that’s a full 10 right there. If you harness those talents around something you’re really passionate about, that’s another 10 points right there. If you have the “hard” and “soft” skills too, that’s 10 more points right there for a total of 30 out of 30 points. Now obviously, very few people will get that kind of a full score, but the scoring system gives you some sort of idea on how you can fully maximize your money making potential. Most people don’t know what their talents are so that score falls short for them really fast. They don’t know what they’re passionate about so that score falls short as well. They may have

some soft and hard skills but it’s not centered around anything, rendering their total score very minimal. You can probably find examples for all the combinations of the three factors to get the point across, but the fact remains, if you can maximize each factor, then you’ve got a greater chance of monetizing what you love doing.

Chapter 5: How You’ll Know You’ve Truly Found What You Love to Do

So after all this, you think you’ve finally found what you love to do but how do you know though? On the surface, it seems to be that it should be a relatively straight forward in terms of answering the question, but the real question on everyone’s mind is – how do I know it’s not just a phase? How do I know for sure? The logical answer to this is that you’ve been doing it a long time, maybe even since childhood. But the fact is that everyone goes through a lot of phases in childhood. How do you know if it’s the right one? If you still see it in adulthood. More often than not, what you love doing has been right in front of you all this time and this is the biggest clue because so often we think it’s something way out there, when it’s been staring at us right in the face this entire time. That’s the first clue to knowing you’ve found what you love to do. Clue #1. What you love to do has been staring right in front of you this entire time. Here are some additional signs and behavior to look for so you’ll know that you’ve finally found what you love to do. Clue #2. You’re pretty much obsessed with your work. When you do what you love, it won’t seem like work at all. Time will fly and you’ll get that “high” while doing it. It’s the kind of thing that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning and when you’re not doing it, you want to get back to doing it. You also tend to be extremely focused and tend to block out everything else while doing it. You lose track of time when you do it and you get in that “flow” state. It takes a lot to get you off track when you’re doing what you love to do. When people talk to you, you probably won’t even hear them. Everyday concerns tend to drop away and fade in the background when you do what you love to do.

Page 41: How to Find What You Love to Do and DO IT - Brian Kim.netbriankim.net/books/download/FINALLY Find What You Love To Do And... · How to Finally Find What You Love to Do and Get Paid

Clue #3. You’re naturally tenacious. Obstacles that get in the way of you doing what you love to do don’t seem that tough to you. You just roll over them. You keep on going. When you get knocked down, you get back up. You surprise yourself in terms of how resilient you are. You can feel that inner drive within you propelling you. You enjoy the tough times because you know in the end, it’s all worth it. You’re willing to take the journey, even though it’s not a “conventional” one because let’s face it - most people tend to go down the well beaten path and because of that, there might be hesitancy, doubt, fear, but you’re willing to trust yourself and go with your instincts and trust that it will all work out and that you will embrace the journey for what it’s worth, even when it looks like the odds are seemingly against you. When your enthusiasm for doing what you love to do is consistent over time – that’s a BIG indicator that you’ve found it. Clue #4. You experience a sense of mastery when you accomplish doing what you love to do. When you finish a task or project related to doing what you love to do, it feels like good honest hard work. You’re proud of the work you did and you tend to get a lot done in a short period of time and add to that, the work is not shoddy work, but quality work. What’s more, you find yourself getting better at doing it. You grow more confident and capable from each experience. Your abilities are tested and stretched to their limits, helping you to achieve mastery. Clue #5. You find yourself wanting to learn more about your passions and you actually do by getting specialized knowledge. You read all you can about it. You associate with people who share the same passions as yourself. You buy books, subscribe to magazines, research your passions on the web. You can’t get enough of it and you devour any information on the subject as much as you can. Your appetite for knowledge on what you’re passionate about is insatiable.

Clue #6. Things just fall into place for you. When you finally decide to do what you love to do and get paid for doing it, it will seem as if the whole world supports your cause. Contacts, opportunities, the right people will all seemingly come together to help your cause. Serendipitous events will follow you and you’ll finally begin to understand that the world does truly help a person on a mission. Clue #7. You feel drawn to doing it like a magnet. You’d gladly do what you love to do without getting paid. You do it on your own free time. You would even take a second job to keep doing what you love. It doesn’t feel like work, but play. You fantasize about doing it when you’re not. You really look forward to doing it and it obviously brings you joy and excitement when you do. Clue #8. It really matters to you. Successful people are just ordinary people really doing extraordinary things that matter to them. What you love doing really matters to you personally. It has personal significance to you maybe due to childhood events, experiences, or things that have profoundly affected you in your life. What’s more, it excites you, makes you feel energized, vibrant, and alive. Clue #9. You’re proud of what you’re doing and you enjoy telling other people about it. You’re not ashamed of what you love to do. You frequently bring it up in conversations and you light up with delight when you hear others talking about it. When prompted with a question related to what you love to do by someone, you erupt like a geyser of information and passion. The Biggest Clue of All You have a gut feeling that you just know - a calm feeling, a calm excitement, deep down inside, that you just know that you found what you truly love doing and that it’s supposed to be what you’re doing. Clue #10. You feel like this is what you’re supposed to be doing - what you were born to do.

Chapter 6: What Now? Now that you’ve found what you love to do and you’re starting the process of making money from it, there’s a couple things you need to do to help sustain yourself during this journey. 1. Simplify your life to free the precious resources of time and money. Avoid debt as much as possible as it restricts your freedom. Start a new life with the bare basics so your entire focus can wrap around doing what you love to do and getting paid for it. Do that by removing all the clutter from your life. Sell what you don’t need. Live simply. Create a tight budget. Save your money. Strip you life down to the bare essentials. Also, in order to free up more time for yourself, I would highly recommend instilling the habit of waking up early in the morning. I know it’s hard to do, but the amount of work you can get done early in the morning while the world is asleep pales in comparison to what you can get done the rest of the day. Here are some things you can do to ensure you wake up early each morning to get a whole lot more done. - Exercise. Lift weights. Run. Play a sport. Make sure you get some sort of exercise done everyday. Even better, make it a priority to do it in the mornings to give you energy throughout the day. When you exercise your body, it makes it that much easier for you to fall asleep quickly because your body wants to recharge. - Avoid eating after 9:30 PM. Your stomach requires energy to digest any late night food, hence making you very tired in the morning. Compare the results the next day of not eating anything after 9:30 PM with eating something late at night and you will see a world of difference in the morning in terms of your energy levels. - Sleep early. This is a no brainer. Try to get yourself in bed no later than 11:00 PM. - Set the alarm clock far away from your bed. This forces you to actually get up to turn it off and by the time you reach it, you will be awake enough not to go back to sleep. - Set a specific time for when you want to wake up. Another no brainer as well. Make sure you get a minimum of six and a half hours of sleep so with that in mind, set the time you sleep and wake up accordingly. When you do all this and eventually get into the habit of waking up early, it will seem as if years have been added to your life.

2. Keep doing what you love to do. Even if you’re not getting paid for doing what you love to do yet, keep doing it. Gain experience, knowledge, expertise, meet people, make contacts, etc., along the way. Don’t “wait” for a time to do what you love. Keep it up. Don’t deprive yourself of the joy you get from doing it. 3. Keep in mind your job is to SERVE others. Create a convincing letter written to yourself on how you will do what you love to do and get paid for doing it. Sell yourself on how you will utilize your talents, skills, and passions in order to help serve others. Feel the fire of the desire to serve others burning within you. Remember, the whole point is to leverage what you’re strong with what you’re passionate about you in order to serve others by filling gaps, adding and/or creating value to their lives. 4. Be patient. Remember, anything of value worth doing takes time. It will probably take at least a year before you find yourself making a substantial amount of money doing what you love to do. 5. Remember that it’s a process. View everything that happens as a contribution to another piece of the puzzle of how you will get paid doing what you love to do. Everything that happens contributes to where you’re going in the future. Remember that and you won’t get easily discouraged. And don’t worry if you haven’t figured it all out yet - all the loose ends and the details. You will pick up all the pieces you need along the way. 6. Write a personal letter to a dear friend describing the joy you feel doing the work you love and getting paid for doing it. This is a simple exercise you can do to really feel what it would be like to do what you love and get paid for doing it and it also combines the essential elements of visualization, belief, and desire.

7. Refuel your belief. Read the books of those who’ve followed their passions successfully. Read the articles of those who have done. The bonus special report that came along with this book contains stories of those who’ve successfully found and pursued their passions. Keep that flame of faith alive. You’ll notice the stages you’re going through in their stories when you read them and be able to relate to them with ease. 8. Keep working until you can get on your feet. Don’t quit your day job yet. Save as much as you can and work on doing what you love to do on the side until you feel financially comfortable enough to take that leap of faith. If you can’t juggle the hours of your regular job with doing what you love to do, then pick up another job that gives you flexible time. I would recommend taking the leap if you have enough money to sustain you for six months. If you can’t make enough by then, you can always take a side job to get you by. Remember, it will probably take at least a year before you make a substantial amount of money. 9. Never underestimate the power of the subconscious mind. When it comes to answering the introspective questions, your conscious answers are more than adequate but the answers that come from your subconscious mind – the flashes of insight are far more valuable, especially the ones related to discovering how you can make money doing what you love to do. Do justice to your subconscious mind by capturing these ideas when they hit. Never assume you’ll remember them because you won’t. It’s a fleeting moment of ingenuity. Don’t miss it or you’ll absolutely regret it. 10. Celebrate your small victories Whenever you achieve a small goal, a milestone, etc., celebrate it as it will give you the energy to go to the next step. However small the victory is, celebrate it to encourage yourself as it is concrete proof that you’re making progress and that there is more to come.

Chapter 7: Summary and Key Points to Remember Summary The idea of finding and doing what you love to do, it’s tough to actually implement in real life but it’s the ideal thing that most people want in their lives. But it’s so hard for people to find what they love to do because they were never really taught specifically how. Instead, they were encouraged to go along with the “system” during their years in school. And for those who want to buck the system and find what they love to do, the advice out there regarding the subject just doesn’t cut it. It either contains way too much information, way too little information, or is just scattered all over the place with no clear focus on what to do. The two essential elements that make up what you love to do are your passions and talents. Your passions are akin to energy and your talents to tools. When both are utilized to serve the needs of others, you find ways to get paid for doing what you love to do. You can either choose the employee or entrepreneur route where you will be able to utilize your talents and passions to fill gaps, add value and/or create it. You can also supplement your talents and passions with soft and hard skills. There are many signs that you can look for to see if you’ve truly found what you love to do – some of the biggest being that it has been right in front of you this entire time and that you feel like it was something you were meant to do. When you find what you love to do, it’s best to simplify your life so you can focus on doing it. Be patient, remember that it’s a process and work step by step. Sometimes your vision may be clear, but the path may not be at first. Just do one thing at a time and let the journey unfold. Stay open to guidance from serendipitous events as they always follow people with a strong desire and belief in what they are doing. And remember, it’s doing what you love that will get you through the hard times.

"Your whole physical being knows that this [following your passion] is the way to be alive in this world and the way to give to the world the very best that you have to offer. There is a track just waiting there for each of us, and once on it, doors will open that were not

open before and would not open for anyone else." – Joseph Campbell

Key Points to Remember

Key point #1: Everybody’s Unique.

Everybody has their own unique combination of talents and passions that cannot be replaced by anyone else and it’s their job to discover exactly what that unique combination is and leverage it to create opportunities in order to serve others.

Key point #2: Create Enough Leverage to Make It a NEED to Find What You Love to Do.

Make the decision to finally find what you love to do a top priority. Don’t give up until you find it. Believe you can do it. Don’t make it a side project. Make it your main project. Each person who has found what they love to do has gained enough leverage – whether it was through dissatisfaction at their current job or a desire to make the most of themselves, to make it a GOAL to find what you love to do. They didn’t deem it as an elective. It was a necessity. It was mandatory. Write how life would be like if you found what you love to do and got paid for doing it. Be rich in detail as much as possible and this will fire up your desire. When you have enough reasons to do something, it makes it that much easier to do it. Realize that once you know what you love to do, once you have that direction in place - that will propel you and make it a whole lot easier for you to press on because you know now. You have a path. You have direction. You now know what you’re going to do in order to serve others. Key point #3: Introspect Well. Don’t fear the process of introspection. It’s easy to fear it because it’s something people haven’t done and they fear that there might not be any results that come from it. When you actually commit yourself to doing some serious introspection and you WRITE down your answers, you will see the power of looking within and writing with your very own eyes. You won’t know unless you try.

Don’t be afraid if the answers aren’t coming out as fast or as easy as you would like. It will be hard at first, but once you get used to it, it will flow. Be patient. Take your time. There’s no rush. Be still and listen to yourself. And don’t forget about the crucial flashes of insight that you get with regard to the questions you introspect on, especially the ones related to discovering your talents and figuring out ways to get paid for doing what you love to do. Key point #4: Leverage Your Talents and Passions. Remember, it’s your talents and passions that will carve you from the masses. Without fully leveraging it, there’s nothing really separating you from the person next to you. It’s easy to leverage your talents because you keep on practicing them and want to learn more about them. As a result, you keep on getting better and better at them. It’s easy to leverage your passions as well because you want to keep on devouring more information about it, helping you become an expert on it. Key point #5: Don’t Forget About The Importance of Skills as Well. As important as talents and passions are, they can be FULLY maximized when coupled with skills. Skills fall into two categories – hard and soft. Hard skills are things like certification, specific training, computer skills etc. Soft skills are things like social skills, etiquette, the ability to read body language, etc. Sometimes, your work may require you to have hard skills in addition to your talents. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have them yet. So long as you have the desire to do what you love to do, that desire will carry you through to pick up those respective skills. Key point #6: It’s All About Helping Others. All this talk about finding what YOU love to do and how YOU can get paid for it can help make the mistake of only zeroing in on how you can benefit yourself.

How to Finally Find What You Love to Do and Get Paid For Doing It

In the grand scheme of it all, this whole theme of finding and doing what you love to do to get paid for it revolves around helping others. Cultivate the mentality of service. Realize that what you love to do is something that’s required to improve the lives of others and take it from there. Key point #7: Cultivate a Destiny Mentality. Even if you don’t believe in destiny, cultivate a destiny type mentality. View your work as something you and you alone, were meant to do and that it’s the kind of work that can only be done by YOU and YOU alone. When you believe that you were meant to do something and you go about doing it, you’ll find that the world will conform to help that person fulfill his/her mission. This book was originally over 200 pages long when first written, packed with information from every imaginable source on how to find what you love to do and get paid for doing it. However, I knew that was too much for the reader to absorb and I knew the reader would not apply anything from it. Therefore, I sought to trim all the fat, to reduce all the information down to the very core, in order to come up with an effective and logical structure, as well as an effective process that everyone can apply to discover what they love doing and how to get paid for doing it. This book is the end result and contains the foundational structure and groundwork needed to build your dreams upon it. So here’s to the inevitable achievement of those hopes and dreams.

Invest in yourself and make it happen™ P.S. If you’ve read my other book The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich, go back and see the whole process I’ve outlined in this book and you’ll begin to see the correlation between that process and the Hidden Secret and you’ll understand that if do you follow the process, you will indeed naturally find what you love to do and get paid for doing it!
