Treatment Information on the Internet

April 2013

Page 2: How to Find Reliable HIV/AIDS Treatment Information on the Internet

This document was prepared for the National Library of Medicine by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education through an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy. ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities under DOE contract number DE-AC06OR23100.

Evaluating Health Information on the Internet

The World Wide Web contains an abundance of free health information, available 24 hours per day. However, one must be cautious to evaluate that information because much of it is unreliable. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is a good place to start to find trustworthy, up-to-date health information. Beyond that, there are some important criteria you should consider to determine if a site is trustworthy. Briefly, the categories you should consider are the following:

► Authority and Accuracy

► Coverage ► Currentness ► Objectivity ► Design Features

Savvy Health Surfing (see following page), a printable reference guide from the National Library of Medicine, provides a detailed list of these criteria with sample questions for each to assist you.

Additional Resources

For further information, we recommend these additional resources:

► HON Code of Conduct for Medical and Health Web Sites

► Evaluating Internet Health Information: A Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine

► MedlinePlus––Evaluating Health Information

► National Network of Libraries of Medicine––Is this health information good for me?
