    Summary

    The aim of this article is to show how to extend a database tablespace using BRTOOLS and then check inthe R/3 server whether the new data file has been added correctly or not. The article depicts how to use thecommand line options to achieve this and is more useful in the older releases of SAP R/3 server and ADD Inservers.

    Introduction

    SAP provides a list of tools (called BR*TOOLS) to manage the databases in the landscape. BRTOOLSenables system administrators to manage the database through menus using a simple telnet connection.BRTOOLS is an interface which can be used to call other BR programs, namely BRBACKUP, BRARCHIVE,BRRESTORE, BRRECOVER, BRSPACE, and BRCONNECT. In this article it is shown how to extend adatabase tablespace by adding a data file to it and then how to check from the R/3 end whether thisoperation is successful. In this particular case, the operating system used is Solaris.

    Step 1- Logging In to the OS with ORASID user

    Log in to the operating system with a user which has unrestricted authorizations for all Oracle DBAoperations (normally SID) and then run the command BRTOOLS.

    Step 6 Amend the size of the data file if needed.

    Also note that with the AUTOEXTEND option, the data file is extended automatically as the data grows.

    Step 7 Continue and finish the operation.

    Step 8 Checking the R/3 server for the added data file

    Navigate to the TCode /n DB02 (Database Performance) and run the update statistics. Make sure to do thiswhen the load on the server is relatively low.

    Step 9 Select the concerned tablespace and click on Data Files

    Note: The parameter db_files in the init.ora file specifies the maximum number of datafiles that can be added tothe database.
