How to encourage Industry to Commercialise

Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa ?

• Introduction

• Real African Animal Production REVOLUTION • Farmers MENTALITY and EDUCATION are changing very

fast • From «quantity farming» to Sustainable QUALITY FARMING

=> High Quality Animal Products => Export Opportunities Results in HIGH ADDED VALUE • Need for HIGH QUALITY VETERINARY DRUGS

• This is very encouraging for the Veterinary Pharmaceutical Industry

• Actual Situation for Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa

• Overcrowded with fake and low quality “generics”• Senegal: 140 registered Veterinary products but more than 1000 marketed • Difficulties for Farmers to have access to Quality Drugs • Products with same Active Ingredient are ALL sold at

more or less the same price to farmers => strong interest to promote only low quality “generic”

products => Very High Margins => MONEY-MAKERS

• Actual Situation for Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa • Distribution Systems for Veterinary drugs => Legal: Importer-> distributor -> Veterinarians : VET-SHOPS -> Pharmacists

=> Illegal: Market Places and in the Streets

• Field Veterinarians : Very few, field work carried out by “technicians” with low professional education

• Veterinary Services ?

• Actual Situation for Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa

• Registration Authorities (RA) : very often still NO real RA in many African Countries

• Several International Conferences (5) to raise awareness of African Officials to put in place Quality Insurance procedures

=> very few signs of improvement

• Many recent studies and reports indicate the existence of huge quantities of LOW Quality registered and NON-registered drugs in Africa

• Study carried out in 2001 by FAO

• 104 samples of Diminazene of • 19 different brand names• In 11 African countries• Tolerance limit : 10%

32% of all diminazene products in Africa are not in conformity with label and insert leaflet (If 5% T.L.=> 56% are NON-CONFORM)

-Tettey J.et al. (2002): Non-conformance of Diminazene preparations to manufacturer’s label claims: an extra factor in the development of parasite resistance. In: Integrated Control of Pathogenic trypanosomes and their Vectors, 5:24-25.

Recent market surveys on the Distribution and Quality of Veterinary Drugs indicate the existence of huge

quantities of LOW Quality registered and NON-registered drugs in Africa

• Veterinary Theses on Quality of Veterinary Drugs of the Inter-State Veterinary School , Dakar, Senegal

• Ndjana F.M. (2006): Study of the Distribution and Quality of Veterinary Drugs in Cameroun

• Walbadet, L. (2007): Study of the Distribution and Quality of Veterinary Drugs in Senegal

• Material and Methods

• Market survey of different therapeutical groups of veterinary drugs collected in different regions in Cameroon and Senegal were analysed by LACOMEV, Senegal (Control Laboratory for Veterinary Drugs).

• Drugs were obtained as well as from the official markets (legal) as from the unregulated open markets (parallel markets)

• Tolerance limit ±10%
