Introduction:

Welcome to Value Sketching 1. We are briefly going to go over the importance of understanding value when creating your own automotive drawings or even sketches in general. Understanding value has several advantages. It helps you to create focal points, describe 3 dimensional objects, and helps you to create interesting compositions. This document specifically will concentrate on focal points and line weight using prisma color pencils.

Now before we dive in, it is important to understand exactly what a value range is. Well a value range is how light or dark a particular color or shade is. For example, if we are using black; The range in value would be the shades between white and black. So picture assigning a range of shades from 0-10. Zero would be white and ten would be black. Five would be a shade of grey half way between white and black.

Similarly, a single prismacolor pencil, in this case black, can yield a wide range of values depending on the amount of pressure you use. We use the shift in value to describe 3 dimensional forms, or in this tutorial, creating a focal point with varying line weights. For this exercise we are going to keep it relatively simple and not get into too much details on understanding the application of the full range.

In the future we will also get into color and how to interpret the range in value for a particular hue and its saturation. It is always important to start with the basics and fundamentals before moving into the more complex ideas.

Examples of Value sketching:

I use a range of grey markers to describe the shape of the vehicle here. Remember that the higher the contrast between two shades, the greater the focal point. I probably would have been better off using a Lighter grey value for the background bands at the top and bottom of the car to help the car pop out more.

Examples of Value sketching:

Clearly in this sketch, the car in the front is the focal point due to the higher contrast in value. The car in front is darker then the car at the rear, which is in turn darker than the background. So you clearly have a hierarchy ofPrimary, Secondary, and Tertiary elements in this composition.1

Examples of Value sketching:

As your knowledge and experience grows, you can start to apply color to your value sketches. The previous picture was scanned in and brought into photoshop for some quick color studies. Notice how the car in the front still becomes the main focal point.

The Practice Sketch:

Here is the sketch that I had created for the video. Notice how I darken the lines in the front portion of the car. However, I leave the rear relatively faded out. It is this relationship that helps to draw your attention to the frontportion of the car due to the darker values.

Highlighted in red, shows the focal area of concentration. This area denotes where the focal point should be whenyou try to sketch this on your own.

Pencil stroke direction:

Shown here is the pencil stroke mapping directions. Apply more pressure from the initial stroke, then ease up onthe pressure and allow as you finish off the end of your stroke. This will help to give you the varying line weight.

So there you have it! Hope you enjoyed this lesson and learned something new! Drawing with a range of values will really help you to add punch and focal points to your drawing. Not to mention, it will also add that extra element of visual interest. It is always tough at first to learn to draw and to perfect the techniques. All you need to do is to take it step by step. Just remember to have fun with the process of learning. If you keep that in mind and practice, everything else will fall into place.
