his is a picture book of the Indians of Southwest Canada and the Northwest­

ern United States by the world famous painter of Indians, Winold Reiss, who was born in the Black Forest of Germany. As a boy, he was fascinated with the Indians in the movies and story books. Coming to America as a young man, he went west to know the Indians and love them. They gave him the name of "Beaver Child" and was accepted into the tribe, which was a great honor for a white man.

I wish to dedicate this book to the memory of Mr. Reiss for the fine and many drawings and paintings he made for this and other books.

He died in 1953 and his ashes were scattered by his friend Bull Child on the Black­foot lands near Glacier National Park. His work lives on in the many galleries and pri­vate collections that belong to lucky owners of paintings by Mr. Reiss. His son still has many paintings and drawings in his own collection.

My good friend Phimister Proctor, the great sculptor, was also a tribe member and the name given him was "Mr. Many Guns." One of his Indian equestrian statues is in the Court House Park in Denver, Colorado, along with a cowboy on a bucking bronk, called "The Bronco."

tf:E sign language has been used since the beginning of time, and some times it may not work for one. On my last trip to Paris I called on several Art Stores to check on my books and to my great surprise, and the denting of my ego, the young saleslady in­sisted on selling me one of my own books. This year I will take an inter­preter along when I visit the foreign lands. Some­times I have trouble con­vincing the store owner, I have never met, that I am Walter Foster. They either think I am dead or an imposter. One well known jobber asked me to stop and see them as they would like to be a

distributor of my .books, and I turned them down. They wanted to know why and I said, "the story that is going through the trade is that you have bought me out, and the other is that I am dead, and I happen to know both stories are slightly exaggerated, so sorry." Now what has this got to do with Indian sign language? Not a darn thing.

<(J:E three tribes of the Blackfeet nation, the Pecunnies (Piegans) , Bloods and Blackfeet are one people. They speak a common lan­guage and practice about the same customs . Some two hundred or more years ago the Blackfeet were a timber people in­habiting the forests around lakes and along rivers . The powerful Chippeways (Ojibuas) pushed them southward through wars until they reached the plains bord­ering the Rocky moun­tains, which is now Mon­tane~. Here they found vast herds of Buffalo, Elk, Antelope and Bear. They in turn drove the THREE BLACKFEET Flatheads, Snakes, Kool-eais and Nez Perces from their beautiful grass-lands to the narrow valleys west of the Rockies. The three tribes of the Black­feet settled down to become plainsmen. This all happened before the Blackfeet had horses. Dogs had always transported their goods. Their pony-bands grew until men measured their wealth in horses. War and horse stealing were their never ending games.
