Question:How do I download and install my Nikon software on a Windows system?

Some downloads from the Nikon Knowledge Database are provided in acompressedformat to allow for faster and easier downloading. Depending on your computer operating system and your internet browser, you will have different options for downloading and installing our software files. Microsoft Internet Explorer 9and Mozilla Firefoxare shown below.Step 1 -'Download then Run',or just'Run'a fileAfter reading the License Agreement, locate the download file link and left clickI agree - Begin downloadThe download link will appear as the icons to the left, click the icon to begin the download process.

If usingInternet Explorer, you may see the image below, depending on your security settings. It is safe to run and/or save Nikon software files.

Click the small black down arrow next toSaveto save to your compuiter, or just chooseRunto begin the installation. Follow the onscreen prompts to install the software. If you chooseSave, the default save location is yourDownloadsfolder. If you chooseSave as..,you can select your own location to save your file. Then locate the file and double-click o begin installation.

If usingFirefox, you may see this:

After clickingSave file,a small green arrow in the upper right corner will become active. This is your download folder.

After clickingSave, the file will download out of view, or you can click the green arrow to view the progress. When finished, click the green arrow to open the view, or click thefileto run.

If you choose toSavethe file, then some operating systems require compressed files to be extracted before they can be used. Here are samples of some zipped files on different Windows systems.

Windows XP

Right click this type of file, and left click "Extract All"

Windows 8, Windows 7or Windows Vista- Another type of compressed file is the Self-Extracting compressed file. There is no need to manually extract this file, just click or double clickon it, and it will prompt the user with installation instructions. Nikon firmware files will appear as a self-extracting file.

Depending on your system settings, running an installer file may launcha WindowsUser Account Controlprompt asking for permission to continue. If the prompt appears, clickYESto continue and begin the installation. Follow the on-screen directions to finish the installation. When finished, you have successfully installed the software. To manually extract a compressed file, please continue reading.

Step 2 - Manually extracting acompressed file.Windows 7, Vista, and Windows XPhave a built in utility to decompress most zipped files. If the folder appears with a zipper on it, thenit is still in the compressed form. Just right click the zipped folder, then left clickExtract all...Vista image:

NOTE: We recommend extracting the folder to the exact same location, so don't change anything, just selectExtract, thenNext. The folder will be automatically extracted and a second folder will appearwithoutthe zipper.Open this second folder and proceed to Step 3. If you want to extract your folder to a different location, clickBrowse, and choose your new extraction location, thenOK, thenExtract.

Windows XP:Windows XP has the same built-in ability to decompress "zipped" files through the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard. After locating the downloaded file, simply double-click to display its contents.(Some installers cannot run properly from the Windows XP unzipped directory so you must move the download contents to a new directory. To move the files, select them all and drag them to any other folder.)

After selecting the download, there may be a short wait for this window to appear depending on the file size. After you see your downloaded file, highlight the file, and selectExtract all files.

Browse for your destination folder, and selectNext. The file will extract (decompress) to that folder. After the extraction is complete, selectShow extracted files, thenFinish.Open the folder in the next window and click on its contents.--Other Windows VersionsTo decompress files using Windows 95, 98, ME or 2000 a third-party decompression program must be used. There are two common programs available on the Internet:Stuffit Expander for WindowsandWinZip

Step 3 - Run or Execute the fileIf a file is not self-extracting, then after the file has been downloaded and uncompressed it must be run or "executed." With some older software installers, the executable file ( .exe file ) needed to be double-clicked to launch the installer.Generally, open the directory with the uncompressed files and double-click theWelcomeapplication (see below). In some rare cases youmay have to double-click the "Setup" or "Setup.exe" icon, ( executable file ) to run the installer. Quite often this file can be found in the "Disk 1" directory on the cd, or if you explore the downloaded folder.
