Introduction Art   is   “the   expression   or   application   of   human   creative   skill   and

imagination.”  (Google,  n.d.)  It  is  using  your  talents  to  create  something  that  is  uniquely  yours.  Name  art   is  not  a   formal   type  of  art,   it   is   simply  using  your  creativity  and   thoughts  and  expressing   them  by  writing  your  name,  decorating  it,  and  creating  it  into  a  beautiful  art  piece.  It  doesn’t  have  to  be  painted,   drawn   using   pencil,   marker,   you   can   choose   the   medium,   the  style,   the  way   you  want   to   portray   your   name.   It   is   a   chance   for   you   to  make   your   name   unique,   to   make   it   something   that   can   really   remind  people  of  you.  Most  importantly,  it  isn’t  hard  to  draw.  Pick  up  a  pen,  follow  the  instructions  below,    and  you’ll  soon  be  able  to  be  a  master  at  name  art.

Step 1: Write your name out in a desired font. This  4  examples  are  neater  and  easier  to  copy  on  paper.  However,  you  can

choose  any  font  you  desire,  create  your  own  font,  or  simple  use  your  everyday  handwriting  to  write  out  your  name.  Make  sure  to  create  block  letters  to  have

white  space  in  each  of  them,  so  you  can  draw  designs  in  between.

Step 2: Decide on the ‘style’ of your art You  can  fill  your  name  art  with  whichever  kind  of  design  you  would  like,  but  it  would  be  best  to  stick  to  one  style  so  that  your  art  would  appear  to  be  more

organized  or  have  a  more  personalized  effect,  instead  of  just  a  bunch  of  random  designs.  You  can  choose  to  create  your  art  anyway  you  like.

Step 3: Brainstorm possible designs Before  you  start,  decide  on  what  you  might  choose  to  fill  your  name  with.  It  can  be  spiral  designs,  floral,  curves,  or  different  patterns,  or  even  all  of  them  put  together.  Here  are  different  designs  that  can  be  used  and  how  you  could

choose  to  put  them  into  your  name.

You  can  look  at  other  designs  to  give  yourself  inspiration.  You  can  try  them  out  on  paper,  whether  you  want  to  combine  curves  with  shapes  or  draw  coral  designs  in  between.  Before  you  start  your  actual  creation,  you  should  make  sure  what  you  are  going  to  draw  fits  or  can  go  together,  so  your  designs

wouldn’t  look  absurd  or  abrupt.

Page 6: How To Create Name Art

Step 4: Fill in the designs After  deciding  on  what  you  want  to  do,  start  drawing  it  in!  Start  with  the  first  letter  and  after  you  finish  it,  then  you  move  on.  Don’t  draw  a  little  in  each

letter,  change,  then  come  back.  This  might  cause  inconsistency  in  your  designs  because  this  is  a  very  creative  and  sometimes  a  little  random  process,  you

might  come  up  with  an  idea  or  a  certain  style  you  want  to  follow,  and  when  you  stop  and  continue  the  next  time,  you  might  not  be  able  to  follow  the  same  style.  Try  to  finish  each  letter  at  a  time,  and  feel  free  to  fill  them  with  any  design  that

you  think  is  suitable  for  what  you  want.

Page 7: How To Create Name Art

Step 5: Improvising When  you  have  finished  your  design,  look  back  at  it  and  modify  or  improve  it  to  make  it  even  better.  Make  sure  you  have  some  space  in  between  the  letters  so  that  it’s  not  all  filled  with  designs.  This  way,  the  things  you  have  drawn  can

stand  out  more,  when  there  is  a  contrast.

Page 8: How To Create Name Art

You  can  also  try  to  create  contrast  between  your  designs,  for  example,  some  patterns  may  be  bigger  and  some  may  be  smaller,  depending  on  what  you  are  drawing.  Some  may  have  more  detailed  designs  and  some  may  have  a  more  general  design.  Before  you  start  the  next  step,  make  sure  you  have  checked

your  design  and  you  have  created  something  that  you  think  expresses  yourself  well  or  is  an  art  piece  that  you  like.

Explanation:  Image  1:   In  some  areas  of   the  drawing,   the  patterns   are  drawn  closely

together   and   have   great   detail.   For   the   first   letter   (starting   from  the  right),   the  entire   letter   is   filled.  However  in  the  second  letter,  only  the  right  half  is  filled  and  it  gets  sparser  and  sparser  until  the  left  is  space.

Image  2:  In  between  the  two  letters  filled  with  designs,  the  middle  is  left  empty  to  emphasize  the  details  on  the  sides.

Image  3:  The  patterns  becomes  sparser  and  sparser,  from  the  color-‐filled  blocks  to  the  thin  lines  and  then  the  empty  blocks.

Examples There  can  be  a  lot  different  types  of  name  art  and  you  can  choose  to  portray  it  however  you  like.  Here  are  some  examples  of  different  drawings  of  name  arts,  and  the  completed  versions  of  the  ones  that  have  been  included  on  top  as

different  examples  of  each  step.

Each  name  art  is  unique.  Some  may  think  that  the  patterns  may  be  similar  or  if  you  follow  the  same  style  they  might  look  almost  identical,  but  actually  the

details  are  almost  very  different.  The  designs  you  have  chosen  to  draw  may  be  inspired  by  graffiti,  paint  strokes,  flowers,  basically  anything  you  like.  You  can  even  choose  to  create  your  name  with  totally  different  styles  for  each  letter,  and  create  something  that  looks  like  a  clash  of  different  culture  or  personality.

Page 10: How To Create Name Art

Don’t  always  fill  the  colors  completely,  leave  some  space  between  them,  choose  a  focus,  have  a  basic  pattern  you  might  want  to  follow.

Feel  free  create  any  kind  of  name  art.  Don’t  worry  if  it  doesn’t  look  “pretty”  or  “cool”,  the  whole  point  of  this  activity  is  using  your  talents  and  creativity  and  expressing  them  in  a  simple  task  such  as  name  writing,  something  where

people  don’t  usually  expect  creativity  to  be  used.

Page 11: How To Create Name Art

There  are  other  forms  of  name  art.  They  don’t  always  have  to  be  in  this  form,  this  is  only  one  way  of  representing  your  name.  You  can  use  objects  and  arrange  them  into  letters  that  would  form

your  name  (fig.  1).

You  can  take  photos  of  different  objects,  buildings  or  basically  anything,  that  looks  like  the  letters  of  your  name  and  arrange  them  together.  You  can  use  graffiti,  painting,  basically  any  type  of  art,  to  create  your  name  and  make  it  something  that  you  think  really  represents  you,

Conclusion Name  art  is  an  art  that  allows  you  to  express  yourself  or  make  even  the

simple  task  of  name  writing  interesting.  It   is  using  all  your  creativity  and  inspiration   to   create   something   that   is   uniquely   your   own.   It   is   making  your   name   something   that   really   does   represent   you,   instead   of   just  something  people  call  you  by.

I  hope  you  have  been  able  to  learn  from  this  how  to  guide,  and  that  this

topic  of  name  art  will   be   able   to  help  you  discover  different   forms  of   art  around  you,   and   inspire  you   to   use   your   creativity   in   all   aspects  of   your  life.
