Product Video

Why Video?
• Get the attention of reviewers and
app store content managers
• Increase the viral potential of your
marketing
• Address customer conserns and
questions = less percieved risk
Use Emotional Hook
• Start with a clear, compelling reason
to keep watching the video
• What problem does your app help people solve?
• Hook can be something that elicits
an emotion – fear, curiosity,
laughter, or poignant moments
Example: Tiny Wings
Storyboard/Script
• Every Hollywood movie starts with
storyboards
• Don’t need to use fancy software -
simple sticky notes will do just fine
• Start by outlining the key messages
that you want to deliver
• Write down what will happen in
every 5 to 10 second “scene”
• Shorter is better, as long as you can
get your message across
• Downloading an app is a personal,
active choice
• Talk to the viewer as if they were
the only person watching your video
• Frame the problem in terms that
they can understand personally
• Use words like “you” rather than
abstract statistics
Make it Personal
• Take your customer on a short but
compelling “journey” that leaves
them ready to download your app
• Define the problem, identify the
solution, add proof points, and then
close with a call to action
• For a game, don’t forget to show the
gameplay – customers are risk
averse
• Don’t forget the call to action! Many
developers do
Create Customer Journey
• Online videos - short and sweet
• Grab people’s attention in the first
few seconds or risk losing them
• If you’re not sure if something
should be left in, it shouldn’t
• Avoid repetition and needless detail
• Keep message crisp, clear & focused
• For most apps, you can get your
message across in less than 3
minutes
Keep it Short
• If you don’t feel comfortable writing
yourself – hire someone on Elance
• It could be the best few hundred
dollars that you ever spent!
