TP Link TD-W8968 300 Mbps Wireless NUSB ADSL 2 Modem cum router is one ofthe best and economical Wireless Routersavailable in market. The router providesupto 300 Mbps bandwidth with coupledwireless adaptors/devices which supportswireless 802.11n standards. This routers isdown compatible with 802.11g and802.11b products.

This Router has one USB port, FourEthernet ports and one RJ11 ADSL port.You will get a maximum download speed of24 Mbps and Upload bandwidth of 3.5Mbps. Wiring Diagram.Proper wiring of the router is important forsetup, configuration and uninterruptedconnectivity. An external ADSL splitter isprovided with this router. Your telephoneline must be terminated to the ADSL splitterfirst. Nothing should be connected in thisline before splitter. You can connect theparallel telephone instruments to the phoneoutput of the splitter if required. See theconnection diagram.

ConfigurationAfter proper wiring and connections, switchON the modem. Connect the Ethernet portof your PC/Laptop with the supplied RJ-45LAN cable. Now coming to your computersnetwork configuration settings. By defaultDHCP is enabled in this router and you neednot to do anything with your PC networksettings. To check the proper connectivityclick the start button and type thecommand cmd in search box ( Windows7). If you are using Windows XP afterclicking the start button select the run taband type cmd. Now the commandprompt window will be opened. In thatwindow type ping 192.168.1.1 and pressenter. If you are getting the result similar tothe screenshot below, it shows your routeris properly connected to PC.

If you are getting anything other than this,you have to configure your networkadaptor.

Open your browser and typehttp://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. A



popup window will be opened to enter username and password. Use admin in bothuser id and password fields (small letters). Asuccessful login will display the followingbasic status page. Select the WANSettings sub menu by expanding theNetwork Menu as shown

The WAN setting page will display the WANport information in a Table format as shown.

Delete all existing connections and press theADD button to create an new connection.You will get a screen as shown below. Dothe necessary changes as indicated in theimage and save the settings

In this page you only need to change Foursettings only.

First: Change the VPI/VCI settings as peryour ISP. This setting is very muchimportant for internet connectivity. Usethe following VPI/VCI settings

BSNL Broadband 0 and 35MTNL Broadband 0 and 32Airtel Broadband 1 and 32Reliance Broadband 0 and 35Second: Select PPPoE from the dropdown menu as WAN Connection Type



under WAN service Type section.

Third :Enter the user id and passwordsupplied by your ISP (BSNL, MTNL ). Thefield is case sensitive.

Fourth: Select the connection type toConnect Automatically. This will makeconnection automatically after switching ONthe device. Click the save button aftercompleting above mentioned steps.Reboot the modem by clicking theReboot sub menu under System ToolsMenu

Optionally you can reboot the router byOFF/ON the power supply.

WiFi settings of TPLink TD-W8968Select the Basic Setting submenu ofWireless Menu in the configuration page. InWireless Basic settings you can enter theSSID (Name of your wireless network),Mode (WiFi Standard), Channel and Channelwidth. You can use anything as SSID.Maximum character limit is 32. It is advisableto use the Mode 11bgn Mixed to make therouter compatible for all type of clientsystems.

Keep the Channel and Channel width Auto.If you want, you can change the channelfrom the drop down menu. You must select



to Enable Wireless Router Radio to useWiFi features of the router. If you selectEnable SSID Broadcast option Whenwireless clients survey the local area forwireless networks to associate with, they willdetect the SSID broadcast by the ModemRouter. If you want to bridge two or moreWireless LANs then only use Enable WDSoption . After that Save the settings.

WiFi Security Options

You must configure the Wireless Securityoptions to make your WiFi networkconfidential. Select the Wireless Securitysub menu under Wireless menu. Thisrouter supports three type of WiFi securitymodes. WEP, WPA -PSK, WPA2 PSK

Figure shows the Wireless Securityconfiguration page. By default Wirelesssecurity is disabled. You have to select theappropriate mode of WiFi security as peryour requirement. WEP is an outdatedsecurity standard and vulnerable also. It isadvisable to use WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK .Select WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK option andconfigure it.

In Auth type you can set Auto, WPA orWPA2 . Three options of Encryptionsavailable (TKIP, AES and Auto). It is betterto keep the settings Auto. Now comingto the important part. PSK password- Thisis the password used for authentication. Usea non guessable word or group of words aspassword. You have to enter the samepassword in your wireless clients (PC,Laptop, Mobile, Tablet etc) for connectivity.

Click the Save button for saving thesettings.

You might have also faced the similarproblem. Unfortunately normal routersdont facilitate flexible bandwidth control.Here TP Link TD W8968 is the winner.Through the Bandwidth control option, youcan very easily and flexibly allocatebandwidth for each client machines. Twosettings are available under BandwidthControl Menu- Control Settings and RulesLists. See the screenshots

Enable the Bandwidth Control optionunder Control settings menu to turn ON thisfeature. Set the Line type to ADSL andenter the total upstream and downstreambandwidth in kbps. This settings will limit theoverall upstream and downstreambandwidth from/to your modem. Forexample if your maximum downstreamspeed is 8 Mbs multiply this with 1024 toget the bandwidth in Kbps which will be 8192 Kbps.

Select the Rules List menu to view andconfigure the bandwidth control (See theabove image). Click the Add New buttonfor making a new rule. In the page You canenter the IP range and minimum/maximumupstream/downstream bandwidth. Forexample if you want to restrict thebandwidth of a particular machine. Get theIP of that machine and enter the IP addressin both the fields of IP Range.

Remember: If you enable DHCP , thissetting wont be effective because underDHCP, the clients will be allotted IPaddresses dynamically. Hence for effectivebandwidth control Disable DHCP . Youcan change the DHCP settings throughDHCP Server Menu options. Under DHCPsettings Select the option DisableDHCP Server. Now you have to configure

You can also use MAC binding option toreserve an IP address exclusively for aparticular machine . For that Select the IPand MAC Binding Menu. A page displaysthe IP and MAC binding table. You candelete, add and edit the entries. See thescreenshot .

Get the mac address of your PC/Laptopand map with the desired IP Address.

I am trying to setup a WDS bridge at home. Ihave a beetel modem that acts as a wifirouter too connected to Airtel for broadband.I need to extend the wireless range so, Ibought a TP-Link wifi router and I am tryingto use the WDS feature on the tplink router. Ihave done the following on tp-link:

1. Disabled DHCP.2. Ensured it is in same sub-domain(192.168.1.2). Beetel modem is in192.168.1.1.3. Enabled WDS, did a survey and selectedthe wifi from beetel.4. entered all authentication info to connectto the beetel wifi.



The tp-link status says ASSOC which as pertheir manuals is Trying to associate. Notsure if it cant find an IP for it, I thinkauthentication is successful.

Can you help me with this? Im not sure whatim missing. I also have read that differentmanufacturers devices may not becompatible for WDS as IEEE does not definea standard for WDS. Any help will beappreciated.

It ispossible to work in vpn through bsnl modem,but signal strength through wifi is poor, so idont want to buy bsnl modem. Please let meknow which modem will be suitable to solvemy purpose.

I can get the TD-W8968sort-of working with anew address of 10.1.1.129by assigning 10.1.1.129 asa secondary ip address,and manually assigning ip,mask, gateway,DNS,etc. onall of the networkcomputers. However, thenthe TD-W8968 DCHPserver still allocatesaddresses in the old default192.168.1.1 address spaceand gives an error if I trychanging to a 10.1.1.129address space so I cant useautomatic TD-W8968DCHP ip assignment. Theonly way around it might beto establish a separateDCHP server on thenetwork for the 10.1.1.129address space.

I notice that when Imanually re-start the TD-W8968 it reverts to thedefault address of192.168.1.1, although I canmake a secondary ipaddress of 10.1.1.129 andall other settings stickafter a manually re-start ofthe TD-W8968.

Hi Sujith,I tried contacting theReliance Customer care.They were very rude bysaying We cant support orhelp you in this regard.please contact your wifimodem provider.

I tried contacting TP-Linksupport. Equally non-responsive area. Thecustomer support toll freenumber is not picked up atall. Tried sending a mail tocustomer support of Tp-Link. They replied saying,Please switch on yourreliance dongle and tryagain and attach logs, as if ihave bought the dongleyesterday. I replied withlogs with dongle versionetc. After that no reply.

I tried contacting Ralph,their south sales manager.He replied saying he willdirect some engineer andguide me. No one turnedup, i sent a reminder SMS,no reply.

Now i have ended up with astupid box. If any onewants it please contact me.Its straight out of the boxand i have kept it back now.

This has taught me not tobuy any stuff from TP-LINK.Really bad customersupport.

disappointed with its USB sharing features.I have attahced 500GB NTFS single partitionexternal disk and not able to use it. I havecreated two acounts in the router. Isomehow manage to access the share likethis:\\routers ip address\sharename but not ableto create any folder. I checked the router forprivileges and all are fine. USB hdd works finewhen attached directly to computer.

I purchased TD-W8968 recently and facing aproblem in getting an internet connectionusing 3G USB dongle.

My problem is, when i switched on TD-W8968 modem using USB dongle insertedinto it, it will work for few minutes (say 2-3mins) after that connection goes off. In thewindows taskbar the internet icon is showingas yellow exclamation mark with No internetaccess. when i looked into the setup of tp-link it was showing 3G is connected properlyand the LED light is also glowing in themodem.

In order to get back the connection youhave restart the modem again. Restarting themodem every 2-3 minutes is pathetic.

Please suggest me where i am wrong.

I am using D-Link DWM-156 USB dongle withAirtel 3G connection. I am accessing internetusing my laptop, iPad & mobile all three at atime wirelessly.

I have bought a wireless printer AIO CanonPixma MG3570.I tried connecting it to the TP Link W8968Router via WPS Method and cablelessmethod,however none of them seem towork.I tried binding an IP address to the MACaddress of the device and reserved an IP forthe printer in DHCP server Addressreservation too, still no success.I found that though the printer hooks on tothe wifi access point ( as visible in the wifistatus) it however is not shown on DHCPclient list.(the MAC address wasnt listed evenprior to binding and IP address reservation)I have failed to realise whats wrong.Kindly help to resolve the issue.

PS: I have V2 with latest firmware update
