How to conduct Training

Objectives:

To provide information on how to prepare for a training session and provide some useful tools that can contribute to the success of the WPS Training activity.

Know the dynamics of agricultural workers

agricultural lives and some of the trainer’s

challenges!

Steps to prepare for training Identify workers to be trained.

Identify handlers, their activities and other that need training.

Crops and Copping Cycles

Be familiar with crop cycles and seasonal agricultural activities, with typical tasks for workers and handlers to be trained.

Profile of Workforce - Know the audience.

Review training material - Good training requires appropriate use of materials.

Select the appropriate language, use a translator if necessary.

When using a translator, make sure he/she is knowledge on the terms used.

Schedule the training When and where? Convenient time for workers and employers.

Location, secure, away from noise, distractions and comfortable.

Take into consideration the audience size and method of training.

Use of approved training materials WPS materials must be approved by EPA. These

materials are available from EPA, FDACS and other entities.

keep training records for 2 years

evaluation of the training to assess knowledge gained and for course improvement.

Allocate time for question and answers

Review pesticide safety procedures having in consideration the particularities of each location.

Practical, Relevant, and Useful Training

Adapt the information to the specific work situation. Example: when you talk about emergency medical help, inform participants the specific name and location of the nearest emergency medical facilities. Also show or tell them where this information is posted. (“Central Location”)

Use examples and describe situations that relate specifically to the participants’ workplace. Example: crops with intense hand labor like harvesting fruit or pruning plants, emphasize that plants may have pesticide residues and that long-sleeved shirts will reduce skin contact

Inform workers and handlers who has the immediate responsibility to obtain medical help in case of injuries, you may suggest to save that person phone number in their phones. Inform other important phone numbers like Poison Control, etc.

Ending the Training

Make sure the participants have understood the information you provided. Do an oral or written quiz, if time allows. Overview the most important concepts.

Thank the participants for their time and attention. Praise them as appropriate.
