Page 1 HOW TO | Coaching Relationships HOW TO | Coaching Relationships “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus commands us to go out and make disciples, but what does that really mean? And how can we possibly make disciples of all nations? The good news is that he called all of us to make disciples, and if we will each disciple at least one person it will make a difference. This is what we call a coaching relationship; one person intentionally investing in another person to help them take next steps with God. While we mean exactly what Jesus commanded in Matthew 28, new language helps to reframe an often misunderstood word: discipleship . Too many times the concept of discipleship is simply an exchange of information. And while “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded” includes an exchange of information, it also requires imitation. How else can you obey what Jesus commanded if you don’t put it into practice? The Apostle Paul said it this way 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” So coaching is about developing relationships and taking responsibility for someone else’s next steps. Your role is not only to help them know more about God and scripture, but to become more like God and what scripture calls them to be.

Both leader and coach already come to church on the weekends so coordinating an hour before or after a service may be the most convenient. It is important that you give them your undivided attention so find a place you will not be disturbed It is important to have a set agenda so time does not get away from us due to idle conversation. This time together is intentionally pointed towards the spiritual development of the individual and group health. You can set up the format of your time together. However, some key components of your time together should include some coaching conversations that have long term proven effectiveness.

Prayer: always open in prayer together RPM’S: check in with how they are doing • Relationally (marriage, parenting, work, family, dating, etc) • Physically (health, diet, work out goals, etc) • Mentally (new books, new ideas) • Spiritually

The courses available help navigate everything from basic biblical doctrines to marriage and parenting curriculum. The built-in studies allow those being coached to work at their own pace between meetings with you. Once they finish a lesson, the questions and their answers are emailed to you. This allows you both to make the most of the time you spend together and helps you be a more prepared coach. Go to: 242community.com/nextsteps to learn more about the site and to set up your account. Once you’re in the site, you’ll have access to two libraries. The Bible Study Library (see screenshot below) is full of recommend books and studies (books and workbooks sold separately). The video content from all these great teachers can supplement the specific next steps the person you’re coaching needs.

You then will be given the options to send the post to someone with an existing account (listed under SEND POST) by simply dragging their name over to the SEND TO column. Or you can type their email address in the text box under SEND TO (see below). The beauty of the site is that it’s completely mobile. Now you can study on the go, watch videos while you eat lunch, or complete questions while sitting in a waiting room.
