    • Prehistory:Performing live music in exchange for a payment goes thousands of

    years back.

    • Printed Music:Printed music followed the invention of the printing press, withOttaviano Petrucci obtaining the first monopoly for printing music in

early 16th Century. Sheet music publishing dominated the industry

until the end of the 19th Century.

    Music Industry History 2

    • The Majors:Throughout the 20th Century and into the 21st Century the music

industry experienced a process of conglomeration and globalization,

forming large worldwide corporations incorporating all the

components of the entertainment industry (with music being just a

part of it). By the late 1980s the entire music industry was dominated

by the “Big 6” corporations: EMI, CBS, BMG, PolyGram, WEA and

MCA. By 2013 the “Big 6” were down to the “Big 3”: Universal

Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music

Group, holding a 88% share of the market.

    • The Independents:So where are the missing 12% of the market? They are called “The

Independents” and they consist of tens of thousands medium, small

and infinitesimal business entities and individuals.

    Music Industry History 4

    • The Digital Revolution:Since the dawn of the 21st Century the music industry witnessed the

disintegration of the classic business model and so far failed to

replace it by a new viable one. Digital distribution (downloads,

streaming, etc.) is rising steadily while physical media sales keep

    dropping.
