How to Add Subtitles to Movies Streamed in Netflix

    Posted on October 16, 2011

Today I finally figured out a way to display subtitles to streamed movies in Netflix. You might wonder what the

point of having subtitles in Netflix is. Well, I can think of at least reasons!

You"re watching a movie late at night and want to keep the volume down so as not to disturb your neighbors.#.

The actors are speaking with a strong regional accent that is hard to understand.$.

%omeone in your family &perhaps your parents or your significant other"s parents' do not speak (nglish very

well, so you"d like to display subtitles in their native language.

    ).

You may be trying to learn a foreign language and are practicing by watching the movie in (nglish and reading

the subtitles in the target language.

    *.

You may be hard of hearing or deaf..

These are all relevant reasons for subtitles, but Netflix has not &yet' implemented a fully working solution for

subtitles in its streaming engine. +nly a limited selection of movies in the streaming library have closed

captioning available within Netflix. nd there is no multi-language availability. %o if you want to display subtitles

in %panish for one of the ollywood movies on Netflix, you are out of luck. +r at least so it seems on the surface.

s it turns out, Netflix has built the subtitle capability in its engine, but makes this available through a /hidden0

menu. If you download subtitles in your target language from one of the many specialist web sites, you can

convert the file into the format re1uired by Netflix, and then /soft upload0 the subtitles to the movie while you arewatching.

2elow I provide a step-by-step guide on how to do that!

Step 1: %earch for an %3T file with subtitles for the movie of your choice from any of the many web sites

speciali4ing in subtitles. I personally like to use a web site called 5odNapisi.Please note that downloading a file

with subtitles is perfectly legal, because the subtitles have been generated by a user (i.e., they are not

copyrigthted content). If the web site offers you several choices, download the one that is formatted for a single

file and for $ frames per second &fps'.

Step 2: 5lay the movie in the Netflix player for a little bit and mark the timing &minutes and seconds' for the first

few lines of dialogue. This is very important! You will find that many subtitles files that you download from the

web are a little off in timing compared to the Netflix movies. This is because the subtitles were meant for a movie

that comes from another source &e.g., 676' and Netflix may have added or deleted a few seconds of video from

the beginning of the movie. You will need the information about timing in the next few steps, so make a note of it

    somewhere.

Step 3: 6ownload and install a free program called 8ubler9 this is an editor for subtitles. You will need it

because Netflix accepts subtitles in the 6:;5 format but most subtitles on the internet are available in the %3T

format. %o you will need to convert from %3T to 6:;5, using 8ubler. If you are working on a

Step 4: 3un 8ubler and open the %3T file with the subtitles that you have downloaded. :or illustrative purposes

in this post, I will be using The Perfect Hostmovie and %panish subtitles for that movie, which I found on the

    5odNapisi web site.

Step 5: 1uick look at the first few lines of the subtitles reveals that they are lagging about #. seconds behind

the movie as it has been formatted for Netflix. &3emember the timings that I asked you to mark for the first few

lines of dialogue in the movie, in %tep $>' You will need to shift the timing a bit. To do that, first select all the lines

    of the subtitles in 8ubler.

Step 6: Now click on the Tools menu and select %hift Time.

    2

Step 7: The subtitles in the %3T file seem to be lagging approximately #. seconds behind the Netflix movie. (nter

that information to ad?ust the timing.

Step 8:+nce time shifting has completed, export the file into the desired 6:;5 format. =lick on the :ile menu

which will ask you to locate the 6:;5 file with the subtitles. Co to the location on your hard disk where you saved

the 6:;5 file converted by 8ubler &as discussed in %tep ##'. %elect to open that file.

Step 15: +nce the subtitles file has been /soft uploaded0 to Netflix, you will see that a new button with the text

%ubtitles has appeared next to the buttons for :ull %creen and 7olume in the =ontrol area below the movie screen.

5ress the %ubtitles button to ensure that the newly uploaded subtitles file has been selected.

    Update !ar"# 18 2012

s one of the readers of this post has noted in the =omments section, the latest %ilverlight update may disable the

hidden Netflix menu described in this post. I have not yet updated. I tried displaying subtitles today and the

procedure outlined in the post worked. That said, my advice to everyone who has not completed the latest

%ilverlight update would be to postpone doing that, as long as Netflix allows streaming movies without the update.

That would ensure you can still display foreign language subtitles. 5lease let me know in the =omments section if

you have more information on this issue.

the latest %ilverlight update. What this means is basically that we should all postpone updating to the latest %ilverlight as

long as possible. 8udging from how many people hit my post on a daily basis, I can see there is a huge demand for subtitles

in foreign languages on Netflix. Yet Netflix is not doing anything to support that officially, so I think the company is

missing out on adding a nice feature that would make a lot of customers happy.

i Tina, thanks for the feedback. I"m glad to hear that my instructions have helped you successfully watch movies

with subtitles. To the best of my knowledge, there is no difference in the way T7 series and full-featured movies

are streamed. When you say that it does not work with the :riday Night @ights series, can you describe in more

detail what actually happens> re the subs showing at all but out of sync> 6o you see gibberish &instead of

recogni4able text' on the screen> 6o you get the option to turn subtitles on and off> =an you even access the

to reverse engineer the situation and let you know if I come up with a solution.

6ecember $F##, it should work. I am pretty sure if you search for that version, you might find one on the internet. eep in

mind there is no Netflix download per se G the whole streaming takes place in your browser, via the %ilverlight

technology. %o what really matters is what version of %ilverlight you"re using. s far as I know, you can always sign up for

Netflix and then cancel &i.e., no strings attached'. %o I"d suggest trying it out for a month and testing whether the subtitles

would work on your machine or not. Netflix usually runs a free trial, as well G so you"re bearing no risk doing this. ope

    this is helpful.

I believe there are MFk titles for the us market, and about * titles in countries like mine &argentina' for all

of this movies you have an easy menu to set subtitles to %panish. because of the limited selection of movie

titles we are trying to log as if we were A% customers to get more movie options. but many people from arg,

avoid this since there are no %panish subtitles. why doesn"t Netflix allow the whole world to see all MF

titles> .. i guess it has to do with network and cable operators agreements, no sure.

    Emil_M says

    September 24, 2012 at 09:01

i :endo, I think the main reason for the limited choice available in your country is primarily agreements

that Netflix has to strike with the big production studios for streaming their content online in international

locations. The local cable companies may be doing everything possible to prevent Netflix from getting a

stronger foothold in their markets, as well. I think over time you"ll see the library of titles expand G as

Netflix settles in the market and starts turning a profit.

I followed all of the instructions carefully. I was finally able to successfully load %panish subtitles for the

since the Netflix player doesn"t list the exact time the video is paused at anymore &which also causes

s I said in my previous comment, the diagnostic menu shortcut listed in the original post didn"t work for me

i there, sorry for the delayed reply to your 1uestions. :or some reason, both your comments have been tagged as

spam. I ?ust went through my comments list and noticed yours and marked them as /not spam.0 If I

understand your 1uestion correctly, you"re asking how to determine if your subtitles are running ahead or lagging

behind the actual movie. 8ust play the movie for a few minutes, and mark the times &using a watch' when you hearthe first few phrases. :or example, if the first phrase comes out at # minute )) seconds after the beginning of the

movie, mark that down. Then open the subtitle file in 8ubler and see what is the %tart time for the first line G this

should be the first column. If, for example, it says # minute and )$ seconds, you know that your subtitle file is

running # second ahead of the actual movie. Then choose to %hift Time in 8ubler and select M# second. fter you

do that, the %tart time in =olumn # for the first phrase should show # minute )) seconds. 6oes this make sense>

    @et me know.

I @ehcen. I don"t know which program you"re using, but in srt7iewer there is buttons to nudge the subtitle forward or

backward by # second. I use that in the beginning of the movie until I get one perfectly synchronised phrase, and after

that I"m + for the rest of the movie. That is if you have the right subtitle version for the movie, because some of

    them seems impossible to synchronise.

    I hope that helpD

i @ehcen. In my experience, one of the trickiest things about synchroni4ing subtitles arises from the frame rate.

%ometimes the subs you have may be for different fps depending on the region or the original from which they

were ripped. You may have to account for this G I"m mentioning some tips on how to do this in my main post

above. If your subs" fps is different from the fps of the movie you"re watching, you"ll always get misalignment G

even if you offset your subs correctly to sync the first few phrases in the movie. I hope this helps.
