To cloth or not to cloth?

For a formal dinner, a tablecloth makes the perfect base for your dining table decoration. Coloured cloths are more forgiving of stains but white always looks elegant and complements any crockery or additional decorations perfectly. For a less formal look, choose striking placemats and lay them directly on the table for a contemporary look. This works especially well with reclaimed timber tables where the wood is the main attraction. Alternatively, compromise with a table runner to add colour and texture. Clever candles

Bright overhead lighting can be harsh and detract from the ambience so use plenty of candles to illuminate your table. The extra decorations are what will make your table really stand out. For a seaside, New England feel, use small pieces of driftwood and plenty of shells scattered along the table. Glass bowls filled with water, candles and glitter look very pretty, or instead curl fairy lights into a vase for an enchanting centrepiece. A bowl filled with just one fruit, such as lemons or limes, looks fresh, bold and modern.
