The truth is…

there is enough food for everyone.

The Salvation Army is a charity and a part of the Christian Church. The Salvation Army is nothing like a military army – it doesn’t have weapons and it doesn’t fight against people.

Page 5: How The Salvation Army is Helping the Hungry

The Salvation Army fights against the things that make life bad for people, things like poverty and hunger.

When they started The Salvation Army over 130 years ago, William and Catherine Booth didn’t feel it was fair that many people couldn’t afford to buy enough food to feed their families properly.

William and Catherine decided they had to help these people. One of the many things they did was to provide cheap breakfasts called ‘farthing breakfasts’ for children whose families couldn’t afford to give their them breakfast before school.

William and Catherine knew that if the children didn’t eat properly they wouldn’t be able to grow strong and healthy and would find it more difficult to fight diseases. They also knew that without food the children would have less energy and that they wouldn’t be able to concentrate on their school work.

Today The Salvation Army works in over 120 countries. It still believes that it is important to help the poor. Sadly there are still many children in the world whose families don’t have enough to food to feed them properly.

The majority of these people live in developing communities and work as farmers growing crops, raising animals or fishing. They need to provide food for their families as well as enough extra to sell. However, the soil is often not good and the harvest is often not big enough to do this.

There are many children alive today who, because of poverty, aren’t able to eat a balanced diet and don’t get the nutrients they need.

Page 12: How The Salvation Army is Helping the Hungry

The Salvation Army is helping these people in a number of ways...

Page 13: How The Salvation Army is Helping the Hungry

By providing animals and training people to care for them.

Page 14: How The Salvation Army is Helping the Hungry

By helping local farmers to improve their skills.

The Salvation Army is also providing tools, training and other resources. It is helping people to improve their land and to grow better crops.

Page 16: How The Salvation Army is Helping the Hungry

It is helping these farmers and their families look forward to a better future.
