How Tadpoles Become Frogs Tadpoles are amphibians that change into frogs as they grow. Tadpoles live in the water and as they become frogs, they can go onto land as well as water. There are many species of frogs and they can be found on almost every continent. The most common place for frogs to live is in a rainforest. Frogs usually live for 8-10 years but in some occasions, they can live up to 15 years! This depends on the amount of nutrients they get from food. First, a frog lays a bunch of eggs in a pond then leaves the eggs to hatch. Then, after 3-4 days, the tadpoles starts to grow inside the egg and when it is fully formed as an tadpole, it can come out. These tadpoles breathe with gills and look like small fish. After 3 days since the tadpoles hatched, the tadpoles start to develop lungs. Then, the tadpole's eyes get bigger and the tail gets shorter. Tadpoles also have different changes in their diet as they grow older. When a wild pond tadpole is newly hatched, the first thing it will eat is its egg jelly. As they get a little bigger and start to develop they will nibble on pond algae that grows in the shallows of the pond along the edges. They will also move onto larger leaves or the stems of nearby plants. When they are a little bigger and developed they will adapt a more carnivorous diet by eating dead fish, dead tadpoles or worms. After 70 days since the tadpoles came out of the egg, it starts to grow hind legs! Each day, the hind legs become stronger and stronger and at one point, it will grow front legs and the gills start to disappear. One day, the tadpoles will have to breath with lungs and will grow bigger and stronger. Now, it will start to become more "frog-shaped". Afterwards, the tadpoles will finally be a fully formed frog except for it's tiny small tail that will soon disappear. Finally, the frog will lose it's tail and be a fully formed frog. Then, day by day, the frog will start to get stronger and bigger. Now the tadpoles are finally frogs! The frogs can swim around and relax and now, they can go out of the water! The most important thing for frogs are to stay safe and keep healthy or they won't live a long life. Also, frogs need to beware of the predators that lurk in the shadows such as snakes, lizards and cranes. Jeremy
