What do Reform congregations across North America have in common – whether they’re large or small, in cities or in rural areas, across the map?

They all experience change as the new constant.

Each location will be hosted by a URJ Community lay leadership team, with the help of URJ staff, and will run the exact same program, enabling congregational leaders to learn about the changing landscape

of our world and its implication on Jewish life. Birmingham, AL has been chosen as one of the locations.

Programming highlights include an interview with award-winning author and URJ Biennial presenter Anita Diamant. Her new book, The Jewish Wedding Now, will serve as a springboard for conversation,

using the lens of Jewish lifecycle ritual to consider congregational change in the 21st century.

Discussion will follow about the changing needs of congregational institutions with other leaders, and to begin identifying changes your congregation needs to make in order to be

a successful 21st-century institution.

If you would like to attend, contact [email protected] by October 26th. Attendance is $10 per person.

Lunch included

3Our Clergy

Temple to Receive Award for Social Justice, Friday, Erev Shabbat, October 6

Temple Emanu-El will be in elite company in October. We will be honored for our long history of social justice efforts. We will be recognized by the Walker County Honorary Committee and presented with The Medgar W. Evars Award for Religion and Education, as their 2017 recipient. Rev. Da-vid Lewis, a decorated Alabama pastor of the Missionary Baptist Church, and a prominent voice of justice in our state and nationally, will be representing the Honorary Committee at our Shabbat Services to present the award to our Temple.

Is this at all significant?

We might be surprised to learn that, besides recognizing Temple Emanu-El, the Walker County Committee is presenting social justice awards this year to the Carter Center in Atlanta, to the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, to the ACLU in New York City, to AmTrak in Washington DC, and to the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church (where Abraham Lincoln attended) in Washington DC.

Each of the awards is named for martyrs of civil rights efforts – Medgar W. Evars, James E. Chaney, Andrew Goodman, Viola Liuzzo and Michael Schwerner – each in an effort to memorialize those who gave their lives so that America and the world might improve the civil rights of all.

The Honorary Committee has been presenting awards every year, on behalf of the citizens of Walker County and the citizens of the State of Alabama, to recipients around the nation and around the globe since 1963, yet Temple Emanu-El is the first synagogue to receive one of their honors. Thus, this is a significant achievement.

Please plan to attend Services on October 6 – which is the Shabbat of Sukkot – to share in this unique honor and to hear the impassioned words of Rev. David Lewis, as our Temple becomes linked to Medgar Evars and further cements our place in the drive for social justice and civil rights.

As we begin the New Year, let us as individuals and as a community work to make the world a better place for all. One of the ways we are called to repair the world is by doing tzedakah. During these Days of Awe, let us give of our time and money and spirit to help those in the community who struggle with daily needs. The money will be distributed to organizations doing the good work here in our city of Birmingham and within the State of Alabama.

Bat MitzvahRosa Sabel October 14Daughter of Mary and Marc Sabel of Montgomery, AL.

I'm about to have a bat mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham. First of all, I'd be very happy if you all can come. It's October 14th of this year at 10:30 on Shabbat morning. Second, as my mitzvah project, I'm raising money for the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), a non-profit advocacy group protecting the environment for over 30 years. For over 3,000 years, Genesis/Bereshith, the Torah portion I’m chanting, has been calling us to safeguard all of creation. So, I thought my Torah portion and SELC would be a great match. - Rosa Sabel

It is our pleasure to recognize the following 200+ donors who have generously honored Rabbi Miller with a gift to the Rabbi Jonathan Miller Enduring Legacy Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund thus far. To date, we have received gifts/pledges of just over $995,000. Please know that we are appreciative of every gift — as each helps us further build

this perpetual fund to help provide funding for the senior rabbinic position at Temple Emanu-El, year after year.

If we have not yet heard from you – there is still time! Just let us know if you would like to participate, as we will continue to recognize donations in Rabbi Miller’s honor as gifts are received.

Touching, Moving . . . an Enduring Legacy… these are just a few of the words describing our weekend celebration on August 24 and 25, honoring the

lasting impact that Rabbi Miller has made on our congregation and celebrating the creation of the Rabbi Jonathan Miller Enduring Legacy Fund in his honor (see list of donors below).

The Grafman Legacy Luncheon kicked off the celebration with a wonderfully fun and creative “roast and toast” of Rabbi Miller — thanks to the very talented Robert Levin, the Seigel Trio (Lester, Jane and Daniel), and Jason Ruha. We also would like to

express special thanks to Rabbi Laila Haas for her creativity orchestrating the beautiful and touching Shabbat service — along with the surprise appearance of Rabbi Aaron Miller — and to Cantor Jessica Roskin, Daniel Seigel, Dr. Paul

Mosteller and the Living Stones Temple Choir for the incredibly moving musical evening. Reverend AB Sutton and Representative Jim Carns added a particularly stirring component to the service reinforcing the community impact that Rabbi Miller has made during his tenure.

Special thanks also to the Temple Sisterhood and the numerous members of Celebration and Special Gifts Committees, the Steiner Interfaith Fund and the Engel Archives

Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for making the special weekend possible. The entire weekend was truly an inspirational tribute to the enduring legacy that Rabbi Miller has bestowed our congregation. In case you missed the celebration,
