REPRESENTATION IN ROCK MUSIC MAGAZINES

BY JOSH DAVEY

Page 2: How rock music magazines typically represent people

This font represents the artist as strong, aggressive and confident, this is because the font is in bold, and is large which connotes these traits. The font used for the text “THE BEST MCR” is in a font that looks run down, this representation shows the transformation of them becoming the best they can be, which is what the article is about. Also because it’s sans serif it represents simplicity which links to the connotations of rock by getting straight to the point.

The colours used on this pull quote are red and white. The red colour represents violence and aggression, as does the black background. The use of contrasting colours also makes the font stand out, which represents strong and bold characteristics.

This font represents aggression and violence because of the use of bold and largeness. By using these large fonts it is conventional and appeals to the audience. Also this specific font style represents loudness which signifies the rock genre; it does this because of the cracks in the font which look like shattered glass. This can also represent violence and aggression though the same reasons as above.

The use of fonts, colours and background on this section of an existing magazine represents the characters. It represents them in a conventional way, by representing them as aggressive and violent. This is because the text all contrasts and some is in red, on a black background, and red and black show these representations.
