Trex square edge boards require traditional screws forinstallation. However, a Trex hideaway groove cuttercan be used to route a groove into the side of anytraditional board to accommodate the hidden fasteningsystem. This is ideal for starter boards and steps.

The hidden fastening system features the Trexuniversal clip, the perfect way to fasten routed boardsto the joists with no visible screw heads on thewalking surface. The high precision universal clip alsocreates perfectly consistent spacing between theboards for a flawless look. See page 20 for moreinformation on fixing options.

TIPS

Breaker boards add a dimension to the design of the deck and help distinguishbetween different areas. using breaker boards in the deck design also means thatboards don’t have to be butted up against each other. when boards are butted up toeach other, make sure you align boards from the middle rather than the edge to allowfor expansion of boards.

Boards often have a camber / bow in the board – especially the longer lengths like the 4.88m. these are easily resolvedwhen installed. Before installing the board, turn it around so the camber is curvingoutwards. start installing the board from one end. As you move along the board,gently push the board into line and use the clips or screws to secure it.

timber, composite,aluminium or steel joistsare acceptable materialsfor the substructure of adeck. the substructuremust be fixed down toprovide a strong base and drainage, access andairflow are also critical.

the substructure must bea minimum height of38mm from the ground. for areas withthe potential for debris tobuild up, a minimum 89mmis recommended to allowthe debris to be removed.

the joist centres forresidential decks must bea maximum of 400mm.

the joist centres for allcommercial decks must be a maximum of 300mm.

when boards are end-to-end and meet at a joist,use side-by-side sisterjoists to support the endof both boards.

it’s a good idea to paintthe joists before installingthe boards so that they’renot visible from thesurface.
