I’m sure when some people find the Squadron they wonder how this place came to be. Is it some kind of happy accident? Was it some kind of natural, organic growth?

Anyone who’s been around awhile knows the kind of work and vision it’s taken but we do enjoy being a bit rough around the edges and maintain-ing an ―old Florida‖ feel. The Sarasota

Herald-Tribune recently described us as the yacht club’s ―gritty, non profit counterpart‖. Sand and shell vs. concrete and pavement; screen porches and verandas vs. an air condi-tioned club house; native flora vs. manicured landscape…you get the idea.

But one only needs to read our collection of long range plans to see the common threads of direction running through our membership year after year. I’ve read these documents going back 25 years. Many of them are simply revisions and updates to a prior year. However, several stand out as ―watershed‖ years where important concepts are introduced establishing our direction for years to come. Albeit, as sailors there may be some tacking involved.

1987 was the first reference to windsurfers and called for an extended no wake zone (realized in 2010), board overlap with SYSP (2010) and a full time manager. 1994 led to the creation of The Corinthian Fund, an expanded clubhouse, a new entrance on the south fence and the finger pier slips on the wave fence. It was also suggested we petition the City for the ―radio station property‖. 2001 suggested pursuit of a mooring field agreement with the State of Florida. 2008 called for expanded meeting space, adult sailing lessons and to for-malize our relationship with the SYSP (2011).

2010/11 was another ―watershed‖ year since it’s the first specific mention of a new building on our southern border which will be the first point of contact for visitors. It will have an office and foyer staffed by people prepared to introduce the general public to what the Squadron has to offer. It will be a portal into our property, a place where people can sign up for adult sailing lessons, rent boats and also where we can inte-grate different types of water activity.

While we have made provisions for kayak storage on prop-erty and currently house about 22 boats we see this as a sig-nificant growth opportunity. Kayaks (referenced in the LRP), stand up paddle boards, para-sails and other small craft are the new marine growth industry. These are the types of water-craft people can more readily afford to buy and store.

We know this and so does the City of Sarasota.

The city recently asked the squadron for a kayak storage proposal to be implemented on the land we call the old radio station property. It is outside our gates but surrounded on 3 sides by our lease hold. This request was not a surprise and may dovetail nicely into elements of our 2010/11 Long Range Plan.

Currently, an ad-hoc committee is working on a draft proposal for City review and a meeting is planned with Sarasota Parks & Recreation to discuss how to move forward.

Nothing happens without board approval and given the fact at least two bureaucracies are involved this will not unfold any more quickly than other long-range aspirations but it’s an ex-citing development which has the potential for membership and revenue growth and will undoubtedly increase our value to the community at large.

The winter season is in the books and the winner of this

season schooled us all on great boat speed mixed with

brilliant tactics. Firth Lady came out on top with consist-

ently top finishes in all conditions. They were followed

closely by Team Eightball and Team Tanner. The at-

tached results show that lots of different boats had days

of glory throughout the fine sailing season. Many of our

fleet sailors head north for the winter and I'm sure when

they hit their local fleets in the northern climates they will

be tuned up and ready to dominate.

Final winter series race date report:

Great fleet in the water today but too many with the common sense to decide 20k is unnecessary. Huge com-mendation to Chuck Koch who single-handedly RC'ed three long races from Big Ben, in real wind and chop. That was a job for two or more Navy frogmen. Thanks to Daryl Lamb and Dave and Kim Thinel who helped Fred Chanell and John get their high wind exercises with Jim, Richard, Ron and other crazies.

    Spring Race day 1

Great day of racing last Sunday with Ron and his pris-tine (mystery deal) Schurr main and chute combo run-ning away from Chuck K and the rest of us. Dang.

    Spring Race day 2

Good to see Bob L., Tom, Winnie, Fred, Daryl, and Richard today, and thanks to Jim E. Chuck K continued to trade five races with Ron and Barry in steady 14 - 16k with smallish chop, starting at C and racing to D. Those guys have generally been too solid upwind and down of late. ( Fred nipped Chuck and Ron by a comfy five inches the last race.) Lately many of our fleet have enjoyed sail-ing in the Friday night series and have also been seen on Big Ben putting in some RC time. Lots of great racing opportunities. Sail fast!

    Flying Scot Fleet 36 News

Tip of the day. Don't hesitate to ask for pointers from the daily win-

ners on sail trim, etc. Everybody likes to share thoughts on boat speed. It elevates the whole fleet.

You may or may not have noticed the subtle improve-ments to our Squadron property over the last few months. One of the more visible improvements we have been working on is our security lighting to make a safer and more secure club for our valued members.

We are proud to inform you that phase one of the light-ing project has been completed. All elevated perimeter flood lights covering the main boat yard have now been replaced with new units. These flood lights will operate from dusk to dawn and aid us in tracking any activity throughout the yard with our 24 hour video surveillance system. The vines and branches intruding upon the light poles have also been trimmed back.

Phase two is already underway and includes two additional light poles to spread light through the center of the yard.

This next phase will also include the replacement of the lighting to the south of the property covering the small boat yard and dingy racks. To do this and keep costs down we shall utilize the best of the working lights re-moved from phase one.

This project has been well thought out using available resources from club members. We would like to recog-nize our valued member Kelly Green for his efforts in assisting Mark Schiffman in making this project come together quickly and smoothly. Kelly was involved with replacing these lights ten years ago and has proved to be very resourceful and helpful. We would also like to thank member Ed Steinstra, with his one good arm, for his assistance throughout the project.

Watch for other visible improvements coming soon.

    Lassies Sweep Rainbow

Regatta By Linda Kammire Tiffan, 1

    st Officer

One of the biggest racing events of the year was held in April…the Florida Women’s Sailing Association (FWSA) Rainbow Regatta. This competition is open to all 11 sailing clubs that make up the membership of the FWSA. This year the regatta was hosted by the Salty Sis-ters of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The race was held in St. Pete. The Luffing Lassies fielded the largest group of competitors – one Pram team composed of 4 team members and 12 individual Sunfish sailors. Several Pram and Sunfish sailors also competed in their class Master’s division for sailors who are over the age of 60.

Both Sunfish and Pram sailors prepared for the regatta for weeks in advance. We held coaching sessions and equipment sessions to ensure that our sailing skills and our boats were in tip-top shape. Boats and equipment were transported to St. Pete in advance of the regatta. Competitors booked hotel rooms in St. Pete for the night

before the event in order to be fresh for a 7:30 am check-in on race day.

    Our official contingency consisted of:

Pram team: Jane Owens, Gail Seidman, Jacki Booker, Kimberly Duplissey

Sunfish: Linda Schwartz, Nanette Reuss, Jib Brown-ing, Robin Wall, Ursula Olson, Loretta Garber, Lisa Dodds, Rita Steele, Dottie Schell, Michelle Lee, Pat Com-stock, Jo Dzina

Officials: Linda Tiffan – Sunfish Race Committee, in charge of flags

Fran Mericle – Pram/Opti Race Committee, in charge of flags

Support Team: Suzy Conover, Julie Burnett, Rachel Harvey, Robin Callahan, Joan Johnson, Christine Brown, Linda Tiffan, Fran Mericle, Carrol Dzina, Willy Dodds and Frank Girardin.

As luck would have it, the weather forecast for race day was for high winds, possible tornados and heavy rain. Therefore, the regatta was postponed until the next day. This resulted in lots of logistical maneuvering –

everything from boat deliveries to hotel reservations. De-spite this, the Luffing Lassies were ready to sail on Wednesday, August 6th.

Although the skis were clearer than the day before, big challenges remained in terms of it being a good sailing day. All our girls shined in some really harrowing condi-tions and that is an understatement. Tampa Bay was a washing machine!!! We had NE winds from 10 to 20 mph and, combined with the current and breaker wall, we had 4 to 5 foot seas. Everyone has some harrowing tales to tell – of survival, bravery, skill and near disaster. Only the Sunfish fleet completed a race and therefore the regatta. It was all decided on one wild race in which plenty of screaming and curse words were heard and several sail-ors ended up in the drink.

Eighteen boats started the Sunfish race and only seven finished. Under extremely adverse conditions, the Luffing Lassies swept the Sunfish awards by crossing the finish-ing line in the following order (with no capsizes):

    1st: Rita Steele

    2nd: Ursula Olson

    3rd: Nanette Reuss

In the eyes of the judges, however, everyone deserved a trophy for simply being out on the race course. That makes this year’s winners all the more deserving of ku-dos. And speaking of kudos, Ursula Olson and Linda Schwartz arrived at the Rainbow Regatta fresh from the Mount Dora Regatta, April 2

    nd and 3

    rd. Mount Dora is

lake sailing and it included 12 classes of boats. Ursula won five out of six races and placed first overall in the Sunfish class. Linda placed third in two Sunfish races and she was fourth overall.

Back to the Rainbow Regatta: Both the Pram and Opti races were aborted due to the high seas and dangerous conditions. Several Pram and Opti racers capsized before

the race even started. The Luffing Lassies Pram team looked awesome out there and managed to stay upright for the duration. Big congratulations to all of you for rid-ing that Bronco.

Thanks a million to our support group that came out to load and unload boats and provide moral support. The Luffing Lassies had the largest group there. As always, we are grateful to our "Starboard Studs" for their back breaking work!! Our official photographer Rachel Harvey took some amazing photos of the action. You can view the photos on her website:

    http://ThatsMe.zenfolio.com/rainbow.

The stories and celebrations will continue for weeks to come as a result of this sailing adventure. If you know anyone who sailed in this year’s Rainbow Regatta, ask them about their experience, but be prepared for a long and colorful response.

At the Starting Line By Bob Miller, race captain

Venice “Sharks Tooth” regatta: Five brave skippers participated in the ―Breezy‖ regatta this past month. The captains that left on Friday afternoon competed in the ―Sharks Tooth Feeder Race‖. RunAway could not leave until Saturday morning and almost missed the race as a strong South wind made getting to the Venice jetty very wet and difficult. The Venice Yacht Club hospitality was terrific. Thanks to all who participated….

“Shape-up and Ship Out Marathon Series:” Earn your Squadron Marathon T-Shirt when you complete at least 26.5 miles. The course and information on how to participate can be found on the Breezy Blast.

“Labor Day Regatta Planning Meeting:” We are look-ing for a ―few good SSS members‖ to join in the prepara-tion of our largest (over 240 entries) annual regatta. We are looking for sponsors to help us underwrite this event and just a few possibilities include: $1,000 Gold sponsor gets a logo and name on the T-Shirt, $2,500 Platinum Sponsor will have the regatta named after their company plus many other benefits. We also have $500 and $100 dollar sponsor levels. Banners with recognition as well as local and regional advertising will be provided to our Plati-num and Gold Sponsors. Call me soon and I will give you the details.

Enjoy the Squadron and come on out to the ―Starting Line‖….

    Bob Miller-Race Captain 941 773-9353

    A sailing note …

With a beautiful evening of light winds and warm weather, our first of the year "Jack Attack" attracted over 26

ships at sea including three E-Scows who did their own thing. It looked like "Misty" outlasted the Melges for

honors at the finish line in the Spinnaker class. Solitude and MoAir were looking good for the Non-Spin

class. Thanks to all who participated!!! It was a great sight and a special thanks to a great RC

committee. Some glitches in the pursuit timing information will be corrected for next month.

    — Bob Miller, race captain.

SQUADRON DATE 032311 Another Florida spring day with cold temperatures early in the morning and warming up fast (getting hot). Wanda didn’t show up today as she worked the bar this weekend, usually by herself for the One-Design Midwinters and stayed home to rest. How-ever, Stu Barnette began the stocking of the bar that later was finished by Ruth Nordman. Ruth’s husband Chuck, along with Stu Barnette, Gerd Boysen and later Robert Frost, raked up seaweed along the beaches. Gerd Boy-sen and John Dougherty rolled up all the curtains that were left down while Chuck Watkins did yard work out back. Allan Titcombe & Dennis O’Brien gassed all the boats and went to Marine Max and filled about 5-6 empty gas cans in the Mako. Old member Jaye Villain put a plastic bucket form around the base of the charred piling at the entrance to the porch and will pick up concrete for pouring next Wednesday. Afterwards, he and I walked around the property talking about improvements that we could make to the property.

SQUADRON DATE 033011 No cold temperatures this morning, just hot and getting hotter as the wind was gust-ing up to 20 and beyond out of the south. As usual Wan-da was here early (before me) and already hard at work at the bar. Stu Barnette got here next and caulked the flashing above the north office windows which leaked when it rained as water blew in under the flashing as a very small gap had opened since they were last caulked. These windows leaked dramatically during the hurricanes 6 years ago and were consequently caulked till they leaked no more, however, as drying took place they be-gan leaking again. Dennis O’Brien and Alan Titcombe with the aid of Larry MacMillian checked boat gas first and then spent the rest of the morning bailing rainwater out of the large number of dinghies left in the water and ended up pulling 2 very decrepit dinghies out of the water and carting them to the area back of the dumpster for

temporary storage and cut-up and disposal. David Jen-nings and Stu Barnette cleaned and put back chairs & tables in the Pavilion with John Doughtery finishing the BBQ area and scraping dirt and yard debris off the con-crete apron that surrounds the Pavilion and digging a shallow trench at its east end to allow rain water to drain better. Larry MacMillian replaced two red light bulbs be-hind the bar with two small floods that better illuminate the bar area. Ron & Don straightened up the porch tables and moved tan colored chairs to the main dock deck, green chairs to the porch (where they belong) and white chairs to the Pavilion area and probably replaced a clock battery behind the bar.

SQUADRON DATE 040611 The coldest day we have had in months with a strong, brutal wind out of the north-east. Wanda, as usual, was the first to arrive and begin stocking the bar and was aided by Ruth Nordman later on. Jaye Villain came a bit later with a long panel truck with a small, beautiful dinghy (that he built) in the back along with a load of carpentry tools. He also brought a 40 lb. bag of concrete so he could begin to repair the base of the burnt piling along the walkway in front of the club. Robert Melendez began cleaning out the charcoal and rusty metal from the BBQ grille and was helped early by John Dougherty in preparation for a rebuild job to be done by Brian Clark who arrived later on to do just that. Ron Birney and Don St. Clair removed old plastic feet from the office chairs and attached new rubber feet. Da-vid Jennings arrived relatively early and threw away a decrepit old mooring line covered with barnacles which had been left on the dinghy dock by someone. Chuck Nordman began digging out grass and dirt from the plant-ers that parallel the entrance sidewalk, being joined by Bruce Abramowitz after he did the same to the planter on the north side of the Pavilion and John Dougherty and Robert Melendez, Larry MacMillian and David Jennings later. Alan Titcombe and Dennis O’Brien moved new

Reminder: When using the cash register, please

drop off any $20.00 bills in the safe bellow the

bar and after 10:00pm, drop off all bills. (see be-

    low picture of the safe).

pressure treated lumber to the small boat rack to the south and brought down some two by four structures that are used to rinse Opti’s, as they prevented access to the storage area on the south side of the small boat building. Later most of us participated in removing two large heavy regatta boards from the ceiling of the Pavilion for rehab later.

SQUADRON DATE 041311 Very cool (cold) at home but much warmer at the Squadron. Larry MacMillian ar-rived early and watered the new planter beds at the drive thru and in front of the Main Dock. Dennis O’Brien gassed the boats that needed it while Chuck Nordman along with Larry MacMillian cleaned sand and shell out of the sliding door track and then began transferring new mulch into the new planter beds at the main dock, entrance to the club along the sidewalk and by the BBQ pit. Ruth Nord-man, in the absence of Wanda, did the bar and cleaned in the clubhouse as well as the kitchen. Jaye Villain brought his nail gun and with cedar trim that he donated, trimmed out the gaps created by the installation of new kitchen windows over a year ago. Next week he will bring drywall patch and fill some of the holes in the wall that were caused by the hinges on the lid of our large freezer. He also unscrewed the plastic ―bucket‖ patch on the burnt entrance piling and began the process of finishing off the concrete. It looks good and blends in with the piling. Rob Barnette replaced a 2 by 10 section of the dinghy dock that had broken while Carl Myers did an inventory of the dinghies stored in the racks. John Dougherty, Larry Mac-Millian and David Jennings cleaned up the stainless BBQ at the BBQ area for Brian Clark who later on will begin the rebuilding of it. John tore a steel plate off the back of the stainless shelf back of the grille which was unneces-sary and only added weight to the structure so he could replace the hinges which had pulled off the sheet of stain-less due to the excessive weight. Dave Finley dug out big weeds growing behind the boats lining the west side of the club entrance road which sprout in spring and grow rapidly. There are others that will have to be eliminated later.

SQUADRON DATE 042011 Today is for me the first day of summer as last night, unable to stand the intense heat, I closed the condo windows and put the air on, laid down at 12 PM and woke up for the first time at 5:09 AM the longest uninterrupted sleep I have had in probably 20 years. The first one to arrive today was Wanda who did the bar along with Ruth Nordman and later on Larry Mac-Millian who arrived very early and watered the new plant-ings put in several weeks ago, starting with those by the entrance gate and ending with those close to the club-house. Alan Titcombe and John Dougherty attached a white dock box to the side of Owen’s Condo so the 4 pro-pane tanks in the gas storage area could be stored there. Afterwards John helped Brian Clark clean the extremely dirty BBQ grill that Brian had rebuilt the Wednesday be-fore. I have never seen the BBQ as trashed as it was this time. Users are supposed to clean the grill when they finish using it as it’s much easier to clean when the metal grill is hot. When Brian finished he pulled a delaminating Squadron dinghy out of the water and began the long process of rehabbing the rub-rail. Besides rehabbing grills he also rehabs dinghies and has been doing this for sev-eral years at the Squadron. Stu Barnette began digging out an old piling hole where the old entrance gate had been located on the western side of the property that had

been demolished by someone who should have a very injured car or trailer. Unfortunately the electrical conduit and wires had never been removed and as far as I know never shut off, consequently they had to wait until our maintenance guy arrived and tested the wiring for power before finishing the job. Ron and Don looked for metal grommets so they could begin fixing our curtains on the Pavilion. Chuck Nordman and David Finlay cleaned up trash under a couple of palm trees towards the southwest side of the property.

    IN MEMORIUM

Few present members will remember Clem Flynn who passed away on Sunday or as Tom French told me ―Mr. Flynn left the planet on Sunday.‖ Clem was born in Ire-land and achieved citizenship by serving in the U.S. Ma-rine Corp. sometime in the past before he arrived at the Squadron. He was well noted for having an unusual sense of humor that would probably make Lenny Bruce blush. He was responsible for suggesting that we build a ―hut‖ at the entrance of the main dock and that we build an office in the northwest side of an unused part of our north porch which he and Tom French with the aid of the Ballbusters did with him and Tom French doing the tile floor and the Old Original Bandstand just past the hoist. Later, Clem and Tom built the nearly 300 foot wave fence one summer basically by themselves with the piling being erected by a dock company. I haven’t seen Clem in sev-eral years but he is definitely one you will remember and be glad to have known.
