MALOMA COLLIERY

• Swaziland's sole active coal mine.

• Situated 25 km west of Nsoko in the Lubombo region. 

• Owned by Chancellor House• Owned by Chancellor House.

• Anthracite destined for the Ferro‐ Alloys industry: Breeze, Duff, Peas. 

• From 2007 a steady drop in production:

Falling yields with regard to saleable coal.

Shutdown for plant maintenance.

And fallout from the global economic meltdown.

EMASWATI/MPAKA

• Midwinter Resources NL.

• Prospecting right application over approximately 16 km2.

• Operated by Gencor until 1992. 

• The potential coal resource: 55 to 85 mt.

• Yield of between 70% and 80%.

LUBHUKU

NEW PROJECTS

• The Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Princess Tsandzile, revealed at the close of 2010 that the long defunct coal mine at Lubhuku would be brought back to lifeclose of 2010 that the long‐defunct coal mine at Lubhuku would be brought back to life during 2011 under the auspices of the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC). 

• Although the minister was not specific when saying that the SEC would use the coal for generating electricity, it is widely thought that reopening the Lubhuku mine will herald the onset of Swaziland's planned 300 MW thermal power station. 

• The SEC was in 2009 tasked with implementing the construction of this facility, which has a provisional end‐2013 deadline.

• Transnet Freight Rail said the initial focus was on decongesting the Ermelo‐Richards Bay line. • Ermelo ‐ Swaziland – Mbabane – Matata ‐ Richards Bay.• General‐freight link through Swaziland. • Capacity of 68‐million tons a year.• Potential increase to 97‐million tons a year.• Up to 15 million tons of non‐coal cargo might be moved.• Space for coal??• Anticipated loop could be operational by 2015/16.• Link to Matola in Mozambique.• Current shortfall.
