In our previous article we noted God’s command to Israel was to “Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God.” Yet they did forget Him. We need to be careful in our own lives that we not forget God. This is the com-mand that is given repeatedly in the Bible. Solomon in his book of Proverbs said, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, "I have no pleasure in them” (Prov. 12:1). A failure to remember God brings dire consequences. David wrote in Psalms 9:17 – “The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the na-tions that forget God.” God shows no favoritism; He is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). He will punish all nations that forget Him. Even His own people were destroyed when they forgot Him. Israel did not believe that it would or could happen to them. They believed that since the Temple was God’s house and Jerusalem was the city of their God, they could not be defeated. They continued to boast about this and the prophet Jeremiah declared to them, “Do not trust in these lying words, saying, 'The temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD are these’” (Jer. 7:4). Their destruction would come from God at the hand of the Babylonians in Jeremiah’s time and it could come again when they rejected the very Son of God! The apostle John tells us that “He [Jesus] came to His own, and His own did not receive Him” (Jn. 1:11). Jesus referred to this rejection in Mark 12:10 saying, “Have you not even read this Scripture: 'The stone which the build-ers rejected Has become the chief cornerstone” (Mk. 12:10). Because Israel had rejected Jesus, they would be destroyed. Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem saying, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gath-ers her chicks under her wings, but you were not will-ing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate” (Mt. 23:37, 38). Today many people have asked the question, “Will God always bless America?” But perhaps the question we need to ask first is, “Will America remember God by keeping His commandments?” Through the efforts of one person, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, Bible reading and recitation and prayer were removed from public schools in 1963. In 1973 in the case of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court struck down all state and federal laws that prohibited a woman from having an abortion. Today some states have recog-nized same sex unions as marriage. It seems that America like Israel of old has forgotten God.
