Molly SimpsonEnglish Homework12A3How Does Browning Tell The Story In The Laboratory? The story of Brownings The Laboratory focuses upon the creation of a poison under the supervision of the female speaker. The Laboratorys narrative voice is presented in a dramatic monologue form. The reader can infer the 1st person narrator is addressing an auditor who is portrayed as the potion maker, as thou thy trade in this devils-smithy. The solitude females voice is the only one to present the poem throughout, this suggests her loneliness felt by the speaker, where they are, what they do: the believe my tears flow. Browning constructs the voice using an iambic pentameter allowing him to create a defined rhythm. The rhythm is presented to assert the audience of how the poison is created. The rhythm allows Browning to present the apothecary setting further; the rhythm is reflected through the constant movement of the pestle and mortar. Browning uses setting to present the story, which is identified in the opening of the poem. The poem takes place in a Laboratory and does not change. The significance of the location allows the audience to identify what the poem is about; trying thy glass mask tightly... which is the poison to poison her, prithee? identifies an eerie, unstable atmosphere. The setting could also infer how unstable and insecure the woman is as she has come to a Laboratory in order to create a death-like poison, to carry pure death in an earring. The idea of hiding the poison in a hidden carrier such as an earring highlights the idea of death within the apothecary.Language is used to tell the story in the Laboratory. Browning uses impersonal language to highlight the womans paranoia and insecurity. He is with her suggests the woman is so paranoid that she cannot say the others characters names. It suggests the woman is so distraught she cannot bring herself to say their names. The use of repetition highlights a rhythm Browning has constructed. Laugh, laugh, at me, at me reflects the womans heart beat getting quicker as she gets angrier. Browning uses colour imagery through the auditors poisonous creation. The contrast between yonder soft phial, the exquisite blue and the colours too grim! represent she is obsessed with beauty.
