Spend! Spend! Spend! A recent survey shows that British teenagers know where they’re going when it comes to money…

How do they get their money? Most teenagers get about £10 pocket money a week, and 75% of teenagers do part-time jobs when they need to pay back money they borrowed from their parents.

What do British teens spend their money on? In order of importance, teenagers spend their money on:

1 buying clothes – the boys’ favourite designer label is Nike, followed by FCUK, Adidas and Armani, while the girls prefer FCUK, Top Shop, Nike and Miss Sixty.

2 downloading music – 80% of teenagers have Internet connections at home and use their computers to access the Internet. The boys use their computers mainly to download games and music, and the girls use them mainly to send and receive emails and do homework. Both boys and girls prefer to download music from the Internet than buy CDs. Most British families have more than one computer at home.

3 going out to the cinema and concerts

4 eating – one in four teenagers say McDonald’s is their favourite fast-food restaurant, while other popular food brands are Cadbury (chocolate and sweets), Pizza Hut (pizza restaurants), KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken – take-away restaurant), and Coca Cola is their favourite drink.

5 buying magazines – although reading magazines is less popular now, it is still a favourite pastime. Girls are the big spenders, with Bliss, Sugar and Cosmo Girl at the top of the table. Boys read mainly football and gaming magazines, such as Match and PC Gamer.

6 buying credit for mobiles – British teens are still in love with their mobiles, and both boys and girls send around 12 text messages a day. Families with teenagers have an average of 3.5 mobiles, but only one landline, and 95% of 15 to 16-year -olds have a mobile.

What don’t they buy? Many adults believe that teenagers spend all their money on alcohol and cigarettes, but the truth is very different. Only 6% of the teenagers (aged 15–16) interviewed had ever bought cigarettes, and only 17% had bought alcohol!
