How did you attract/address your

audience?

Page 2: How did you attract

I did a lot of things visually and linguistically to attract my audience. For example I stuck to a colour scheme and made it aesthetically pleasing, used eye-catching pictures and fonts that matched the genre of my magazine, which in turn, attracted my audience.

Attract

By using a strong, powerful picture I think this helped to attract my audience. Other existing, successful music magazine also use this method.

My music magazine Existing music magazine

My font for the masthead was called ‘brushed’ and has a graffiti/scribbled feeling to it. It is a statement font which attracts my audience and would become a distinguishing feature of my magazine.

Colour Scheme

I used red, blue and white ad my main colour scheme. Using a colour scheme makes my magazine have a much more unformed and finished look. It also ties in all of the aspects of the magazine (pictures, photographs and font). Using the colours red, blue and white also gives it a Union Jack flag feel. This sense of unity and being proud is what i wanted my magazine to portray so this colour scheme supported it.

LayoutThe layout of my magazine (front cover) is very clutter free. I did this by moving all the cover lines to one side and in a bunch and leaving the main photograph open. I wanted to make the front cover look eye-catching but also not confront the audience too much or give them too many things to look at in one go.

For example this Kerrang! Front cover was too cluttered to use as a model for the layout when making my front cover.

Whereas this Q magazine was more the layout style I was going for.

This is my music magaine LIBERATED.

Other things that attracted my audience was for example, the price of my music magazine and the cover lines (actual content)

My magazine was priced at £2.99. I came to this conclusion for the price through research from doing questionnaires. I found out that £2.00 - £4.00 was the average price people would be prepared to pay. I specifically chose £2.99 simply because it sounds cheaper than saying £3.00! If the price isn’t too high then it attracts the audience in more to actually purchase my product.

My cover lines and contents of the magazine were all within the genre of music my magazine presents. I also used lexis to my advantage. Words such as ‘top’ ‘unleashed’ ‘the best’ ‘the newest’ all helped to attracts the audience as it makes them feel as though they are getting exclusives on music and that they are being let into the music world.

Addressing my audienceI addressed my audience in a pretty informal way. I did this because I wanted my magazine to be comfortable and easy to read. From doing research into existing music magazines I know that many magazines use this informal tone throughout their lexis. For example saying phrases instead of long, proper sentences, using exclamation marks to make the text more exciting and calling the reader ‘you’. This ‘breaking of the 4th’ adds a friendly vibe throughout my magazine. However I didn’t want my music magazine to be too informal as it would take away from my modern/slightly sophisticated tone.

An example taken from my double page spread interview with Jess Hart. Creates a relaxed atmosphere and easy going.

Having an ‘editors note’ on the contents page also helps to create an informal tone too. Making the reader seem more like a friend of the magazine and not just a subscriber.

Addressing my audience

In my photographs of Jess Hart they were mostly posed but not in a rigid/stuff way. I wanted the cover shot to be loud so having her scream at the camera conveyed this. The front cover picture address’ the audience by getting their attention.

Having photographs that are coupled with props such as the amp help to tell the audience what the artist is about. In Jess Hart’s case, that she is all about the music.

Clothing was also a big part in helping to address and connect with my audience. Jess’ style was easy going with a touch of rock/attitude. This is supported by the leather jacket and funky head scarf. The fact that Jess Hart is real and down to earth lets the audience aspire to be her or see a bit of them selves/relate too.
