... but they transport 90% of cargo
Emissions * CO2 – Carbon dioxide * SO2 – Sulphur dioxide * NOX – Nitrogen oxide * Particulate matter
Water use * Ballast water: invasive species * Sewage * Anti-fouling paint
Garbage and chemicals * Sludge from separators and filters * Garbage * Chemicals
Resource consumption * Fuels (HFO, MDO/MGO) * Water

Introduced IMO measures to reduce CO2-emissions
EEDI - Energy Efficiency Design Index • as a future mandatory technical measure for new
ships (first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.681)
EEOI - Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator • as a voluntary technical measure for ships in service
(first interim Guidelines published in 2005 as MEPC/Circ.471, revised in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.684)
SEEMP - Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan • as a mandatory operational measure for existing ships
(first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.683 )

New good development: no emission trading but MRV
EU is no longer pushing an Emission Trading System, but “a simple robust and globally feasible approach towards setting a system for • monitoring, • reporting and • verification of emissions based on fuel consumption is the necessary starting point.”

Slide 6
What is monitored gets attention – the simple SEEMP cycle can act as framework
Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan - Process
Measuring (Planning, monitoring)
Doing (implement energy measures)
• Define feasible monitoring KPIs (e.g. EEOI)
• Define the baseline (where you are today)
• Set the targets (to where you want to improve)
• Monitor the target achievement Win-Win situation: • CO2 reduction = fuel bill reduction • Other emission reduction = compliance
increase

How can IT help now: Actually there are “tons” of (valuable) voyage data reported already
There is a lot of voyage reporting done today onboard: • noon, arrival/departure, stop, ... • bunkering, fuel change over, ...
• same data, different formats, redundant entry
Many of these data are highly valuable if used systematically: • fuel, lubes ... • speed, position ... • voyage, vessel ...
A lot of new environmental regulation will need these data: • SOx, NOx regulation • CO2 measures • NGO reporting
Make better use of this reported data ! How? - Harmonized voyage reporting, structured data collection and analysis

Slide 8
Today’s voyage data collection is not helpful
Data is collected temporarily and lost for further usage

Wouldn’t it be nice to have an integrated system capable of making use of all existing operational data?
GL EmissionManager • Software solution • Onboard recording of voyage, operational and state data
• substituting already used daily noon, departure and arrival reports ...
• one data entry for different purposes
• Onshore derivation and analysis of all operational, bunkering and emissions information
• performance monitoring for a vessel and the entire fleet
• based on comprehensive data logging
• Emission data can be certified
Emissions: • into air (NOx, SOx, CO2,...) • into water (oil, ballast, bilge water ...) • on shore (e.g. garbage, sludge, ...)

Innovations and Advantages • Replacement of traditional ship to shore reporting
(e.g. eMail, Excel, Fax ..)
• Avoidance of double work for the crew • no additional data needed for emission reporting • automatic re-use of once entered data, smart default values
• Reporting process safeguards highest data quality & integrity • event triggered reporting • checks for plausibility and completeness
• Structured and connected information • web access on all operational data • powerful Fleet Analysis • ideal basis for SEEMP baseline setting and monitoring
• Certifiable emission information according to industry standards (e.g. CCWG, ESI, CSI, EP-O (GL))

The Verification part: EP-Operation provides a certified emission inventory
EP-Operation content: a certified emission inventory
• Covers ship’s emission during normal operation
• Considers emissions into air, water, shore addressed within
• MARPOL and
• other IMO conventions (e.g., Ballast Water Convention)
• Comprises Emission reports and certificates
EEOI calculation (IMO energy efficiency) and Certificate
