The drive is what holds the region lock, so you need to fix that through a firmware upgrade (not really asdifficult as it sounds, your Mac does it through automatic updates all the time, the process below is all drag & drop). Follow these steps.1) go to Applications --> Utilities --> System Profiler2) click on "Disk Burning" under the Hardware grouping, this will display info about your drive.3) see what kind of drive you have at the top; visit this site and do a search for that drive type http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php3a) If your drive is a Matsushita UJ-868 or UJ-857E you're in super luck, just go here http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f...3b) read the whole page, and then download the Matsushita Flasher, as well as the firmware for your drive type (don't worry that it doesn't match the Firmware listedfor your drive under the System Profiler/Disk Burning tab, you're installing the new firmware; Also, don't worry if the firmware matches what you already have, you'llbe downloading the RPC-1 firmware, you likely have RPC-2 firmware right now. All that's important to know is that RPC-1 = region free capable, and RPC-2 = regionlocked = bad!!!)3c) if you want to be sure what type of drive you have before you begin, I suggest downloading something called "DVD Info X" (google and you'll find it). this will tellyou the type of drive you have and if it's RPC-1 or RPC-23d) open the Matsushita Flasher utility and follow the instructions, drag and drop the new firmware you just downloaded into the folder it asks you to. Restart theMac and off you go.

4) for other drives, and for newer macbooks there really aren't many. You'll have a mixed bag of results. The older the drive the easier it is. But if you cant find it athttp://forum.rpc1.org/ then, in my experience, you probably won't find it at all, or it won't be a good fix.

CancelYipYip over 3 years agoFerren, my apologies for the super long delay in response to your question. I stated "Matsushita" in error. It really should be Matshita, so you're fine to use the stepsI outline above. Just go here, http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?f... and download the Matshita flashed and the rcp-1 firmware for the UJ-868 KB19. Sorry for themix up. As for comments stating that this voids your warranty, it's true that apple would consider non-standard firmware a breach of their warranty terms, however I've neverknown anyone to have drive malfunctions as a result of these steps and it is always possible to reflash the drive to a sandard, native rcp-2 firmware if you wanted to. Also, with regards to making your system OS itself or Mac's DVD player region free, you can't. But there are some players out there that be set to automaticallychange the drives current region (a dialogue box pops up asking if you want the region to be changed). I don't know a link to one off hand as I don't vary regionsenough to make it an issue for me to manually change it, but I know they're out there. (I think VLC now supports this feature acctuay).EditDeleteRemove

Update

CancelJason Koh 1 year agoAs I have said a while back, the problem is with Apple and the DVD consortium.

All we want to do is watch our legally acquired DVDs (from several regions) on our Apple computers. This is a very reasonable thing to want to do. If we have to golook for a download, tamper with our DVD drives etc in order to do this, then IMO, it is not a reasonable solution.

This has nothing to do with piracy. If the DVD was illegal, it probably will be region free - why would pirates want to limit the playability of their product? The onlyreason, and it is a very stupid one, is that the studios want to control the timing of releases in different regions, so say if Harry Potter 9 is released in region 1 first, someone in region 6, God forbid, won't be able to just order it from Amazon and play it. But hang on, they CAN! - because DVD players nowadays routinely bypassthe region check.

This is the ultimate irony - region coding serves no purpose whatsoever except to inconvenience those who watch DVDs on Apple computers (and whichever othermanufacturers are stupid enough to enforce the scheme).

So, if we want a real solution, we should lobby Apple to remove this idiotic restriction. Otherwise, we are just condemning hundreds of thousands of current andfuture users to wasting their time and money on hacks, in order to do something that we reasonably expect our computers to be able to do.EditDeleteRemove

The easiest way to make the MacBook Pro's <a href="http://www.easydvdburning.com">DVD</a> drive region free is to download SimpleFlash and flash the drive to RPC-1.

allcityanarchy over 2 years agohi, this whole sort of region lock thing has been annoying me for some time now, i have a macbook pro 10.6.8 intel core i7 with drive region locked to 2 & i have usedup my 4 drive region swaps going back & forth from 2 to 1 & back again etc... ive read through & checked out my drive in system profiler which is MATSHITA UJ-898 HC10...

i downloaded the UJ898 stock+RPC1 patch & drag-dropped the 2files from the patch download folder on to the Matshita Flasher which opened up the Terminal... after a few seconds the terminal says Process Complete but above that it also says "fatal: Selected drive (null) does not appear to be a matshita device" but irestarted mac anyway & once rebooted i put in region 1 disc, i now have 4chances again to change my drive playable region, which is cool i guess, but am i missingsomething to fix this permanently, as im from the UK & on holiday in Canada atm & am traveling about... yeh i know, why am i bothering with dvds when i got thewhole world to see haha... any help would be much appreciated & thanx to all you who help make our region free viewing a pleasure... Oscar Del Valle 1 year agoInterestin all your comments but really I got tired trying to change the DVD using any software. The solution that worked for me was to bought a SAMSUNG externalBlu-Ray disk player who also plays blu-rays on my MAC. This drive is DVD region free so now i can watch all my region 1 DVD s with no problem (since I live inMexico and the DVD format for my country is region 4). With this external drive i can also convert all my DVD to iPad format. And I only spent like $150.00 USD. Idon`t remember the model but i m sure any Best Buy or any like the mega stores yo have in the USA will have this SAMSUNG blu ray player.Commentgood answer! good answer! (undo)

DeleteRemoveOfficialForkuloopi 4 months agoI have a 2011 macbook pro, MAC OS X 10.6.8

please look at these links too (thanks VMA):

http://thetechjoiner.com/tech/mac/how...

http://www.dmitry-dulepov.com/2011/12...

I have a MATSHITA UJ-898 HC10. I followed all the steps given in the post by YipYip and the links given above (many thanks) and after several attempts trying tofigure out how to do this right.

(I got both "the drive not found" and "fatal error: this is not a Matshita device" errors in my unsuccessful attempts and almost gave up.)

What finally worked:

I downloaded MatshitaFlasher 0.6, unzipped it, and ran it. Following dmitry's suggestion I first played a dvd in the drive, ejected it. I then opened the relevant firmware file "UJ-898_HC10_RPC1.dat". in MatshitaFlasher 0.6 ( could not figure out the drag and drop suggested above).

It took a little while about 2 minutes then the flasher output matched the one given in Dmitry's post.Commentgood answer! good answer! (undo)
