How a good relationship with technology can help further and develop learning
Technology is multi facetted with many new layers constantly being unraveled. It is
important to understand that as facilitators of learning for children with ICT we must
be consistent and clear when explaining what we are collectively aiming for. Children
at my school like consistency and routine, which then forms solid foundation where
children feel able to contribute build and grow together for lifelong learning.
The brain is extremely complex but also has an incredible capacity for change and to
learn. The important component to unlocking the brain is simply how we engage each
individual, which will dramatically improve learning. Humans are receptive to
information in many ways, some being visual, auditory, Kinesthetic learners or
sometimes a mixture. If we identify each individuals needs for learning in a positive,
supportive environment then they will have their emotional needs met, thus resulting
in motivation, which is imperative for effective learning. In my experienced when
monitored correctly the use and support of ICT benefits pupils learning significantly.
However I must point out that there is a minority of pupils we must consider who
struggle to deal and come down from ICT. What I mean by ‘Come Down’ is for some
it is too much stimulation, which results in bad behaviors occurring. We can still
continue with ICT but be extra vigilant with the individuals involved.
Specifically related to my lesson I have witnessed a huge improvement with
confidence in individuals, which is important. The familiarity of theI pad allowed
them to feel happy and have their emotional needs met. A famous theorist by the
name of (Maslow, 1943) highlighted that if one’s emotional needs are met then there
is more chance of engagement which breads motivation, which is the catalyst to any
learning.
Although particularly successful if I were to repeat again soon I would be clearer at
the start with my learning outcomes and also allocated more time for the pupils to
practice and get used to the Apps on the I Pad. With technology it is ever advancing,
we must look at this as extra training tools in the bag, which is beneficial. Like
anything in life I would rather have a big bag of some unused tools rather than a small
amount of tools to help from.
