An Annual Report is our chance to sing our praises just a bit and to thank those who help us do the important work we do. The praise and the thanks are surely well deserved. Hospice of the Valley doctors, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, grief counselors, chaplains, administrative and support staff, volunteers, board members, patients and families, and generous donors all deserve praise. We’re a well-organized team, a close family of non-profi t, healthcare professionals who along with our community of donors comes together every day to meet the needs of those facing a milestone chapter in their lives. collaboration with community organizations like the Chinese Coalition for Compassionate Care and Pallium India–USA has broadened our capabilities to serve the special needs of diverse populations.

Our new Palliative Care Center | Silicon Valley™, the fi rst free-standing outpatient palliative care center in California, will open fall 2012 to serve patients and families at any stage of a serious illness.

Our annual conferences Compassion in Action and Hospice Foundation of America’s Spirituality and End-of-Life Care saw record numbers of attendees.

Hospice of the Valley also launched a new design. Research conducted in 2010 told us that the community views our organization as a forward-thinking and innovative community-based, non-profi t hospice. They see Hospice of the Valley as a

thought-leader and expert in palliative and end-of-life care at local, regional and national levels. If that’s not something to crow about, we don’t know what is. We felt our new logo and messaging should refl ect that thinking.

Kathy Schuda shows up just about

everywhere at Hospice of the Valley.

Contributing over 500 hours of

volunteer time in the past year alone,

Kathy is a mainstay of volunteerism.

Having joined Hospice of the Valley

as a patient care volunteer in 2004,

Kathy has visited patients and families

on a weekly and as-needed basis

ever since. In 2009, Kathy was elected

to the Board of Directors at Hospice

of the Valley. Her keen business acu-

men and expertise as an attorney

has contributed greatly to her work

on many board committees and as

secretary of the Board. Kathy fervently

believes that her role as a patient care

volunteer is an integral part of her

Board contribution and responsibility,

demonstrating the important role of

volunteers within the organization.

A vivid experience that has remained

with Kathy centers on a female

patient she visited weekly for an

entire year. Over time, Kathy and

the patient developed a close,

trusting relationship.

She confided in Kathy the painful

memories she had been unable

and unwilling to share with her

husband and family over the years

about her experience in a concen-

tration camp.

“I felt privileged to be the trusted

recipient of this patient’s private

stories, and the patient was grateful

and relieved to find a safe haven to

share those painful and emotional

memories,” said Kathy.

When Hospice of the Valley identified

a need for a volunteer to be at the

bedside of patients in their final

hours of life, Kathy stepped up

once again. She was instrumental

in establishing Hospice of the Valley’s

vigiling program—Calm Companions.

Kathy remains an integral member

of the team; she inspired other

seasoned volunteers to become

Calm Companions and is involved

with planning the curriculum for the

annual training.

Kathy’s hard work and dedication

to Hospice of the Valley has not

gone unnoticed. On April 29, 2011,

Kathy received the Junior League

of San Jose’s Crystal Bowl award,

recognizing individuals who have

generously given their time, energy

and skills to improve the lives of

others. Time after time, Kathy has

enriched our programs with her

presence, her intelligence, and

her devotion to our patients, staff,

volunteers, and our community.

Kathy truly embodies the spirit of

community volunteerism.

Krista Henley had a magnetic smile

and intense eyes. She was a 50-year-

old mother of two and a dear friend

of mine for over 23 years. In 2011,

Krista asked me to accompany her

to Stanford Hospital for a brain MRI.

Previous visits carried bad news—

cancer had metastasized from

Krista’s breast to nine other organs

in her body—and Krista knew the

possibility the cancer could spread to

her brain. As Krista and I walked back

to the doctor’s office from the MRI,

the sun was shining so brightly on our

faces it made the beautiful California

day seem almost inappropriate for

the somber, uneasy mood that

enveloped us. She asked me bluntly,

“What if the cancer is in my brain?”

I felt paralyzed with fear to answer

her question because I knew she

wanted the truth. Thinking of her two

children, she looked terrified at the

thought of having to tell them that

the news was even worse than the

previous days and weeks before.

I said, “Krista, we have to deal with

that news when we hear it. What can

I do to help you?” She said, “I’m not

going to get radiation on my brain

and I want you to support me!”

Then it happened. The cancer had

spread once again and the doctors

suggested she begin brain radiation

and chemotherapy immediately.

She refused. Krista chose not to go

the conventional way. She wanted

to die with dignity and she wanted

to keep her hair and her mind. She

needed time to plan what her children

were going to do without her for the

rest of their lives and she had to be

able to think! Krista needed a team

of people to be on her side and help

her to do what she wanted to do in

those last months of her life.

We didn’t know much about

Hospice of the Valley but we had

to give it a shot, and we were im-

mediately thankful. Hospice of the

Valley gave us an amazing group of

people to work with. They stayed by

our side, comforted us, and treated

us as though we were family. Hospice

of the Valley showed us continuous

support by handling simple things

like arranging for someone to cut her

hair, to the most difficult things, such

as sitting with family members as they

came to the ultimate conclusion;

Krista was going to die and it was

going to happen soon.

Hospice of the Valley was able to

assist from day one, transitioning

Krista to comfort care at home, all the

way to her final days and including

her death. They provided us with a

nurse, social worker, chaplain,

doctor, hospice aide, and even

a terrific Reiki volunteer. With the

support of Hospice of the Valley, all

of the pieces fell into place. We are

all proud to be connected with each

individual who stepped up to the

plate and helped someone dying

of cancer but striving to live, even

though her physical body would not

allow it. Not one person from Hospice

of the Valley ever told Krista they

would not or could not help her. They

all stuck together and pulled through

the easy and the difficult times. And

there were many.

There’s nothing quite like the pain in

your chest when you know there’s

nothing you can do to help a friend.

My entire life I’ve been a problem

solver. If people need advice or

relationship tips, I am the first person

they come to. However, when it came

to the death of a grandparent and

the death of a friend, I didn’t know

how to fix it. On November 12, 2009,

I received news that my grandfather

had passed away after a five year

battle with cancer. This was a tough

blow for my family and me, but

I was glad that he no longer had

to suffer or feel pain. Approximately

twelve hours after hearing of my

grandfather’s death, I found out

that my good friend Jake had

committed suicide.

In the initial days and weeks after

these two events, I found myself sink-

ing into what I can only describe as

a black hole. I wasn’t the James I had

been. I had lost my happy-go-lucky

attitude and my passion for life. My

parents had told me that there was

counseling available if I ever felt I

needed it, but I thought I could handle

it myself. After a couple of months of

battling depression and trying to get

over it on my own, I made the choice

to go to grief counseling.

I joined the Teen Support Group

offered by the Community Grief and

Counseling Center, a program of

Hospice of the Valley. Some members

of the group had lost parents, brothers,

sisters, grandparents, or friends. The

group offered a supportive environ-

ment for all of us as we tried to come

to grips with our individual losses.

This entire process was a struggle

because I couldn’t understand why

my friend Jake had chosen to end

his life. I had so many questions, but

no one seemed to have the answers.

Slowly, through conversations and

with the guidance of the counselor,

we all began opening up and

sharing our stories. As a result of my

involvement with the Teen Support

Group, I began to change: not back

into the person I was, but into the

person I wanted to be. I began the

road to acceptance and peace

with what had happened. This group

environment helped me realize

that some questions will never be

answered, and that I shouldn’t blame

myself for what happened.

Although going through the death

of a grandparent and a friend was

absolutely crushing, the process of

coming to terms with their deaths has

helped me to look to the future with

a positive attitude.

Dr. Theodore “Ted” Cohen, MD,

was among the honored finalists

at the Silicon Valley/San Jose

Business Journal Health Care Heroes

award ceremony in June 2011. In

October 2011, Dr. Cohen went on to

receive the prestigious Pierre Salmon

Award by the California Hospice

and Palliative Care Association

in recognition of his outstanding

contribution to the advancement of

hospice and palliative medicine in

California. The following is an excerpt

from the nomination narrative written

by Sally Adelus, president and chief

executive officer of Hospice of

the Valley, San Jose CA and

Neal Slatkin, MD, vice president

and chief medical officer.

of challenge and controversy.”

These profound words capture the

very essence of Dr. Cohen and frame

the qualities that have prompted us

to honor him with a nomination for

the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business

Journal’s 2011 Health Care Heroes

of Silicon Valley.

Endearingly known as “Dr. Ted”, he

has provided compassionate medi-

cal services to thousands of residents

of Santa Clara County, often during

the most critical and challenging

moments of their lives. Many thou-

sands more have indirectly benefited

from his countless hours of volunteer

teaching to nursing and medical

professionals on the science and art

of end-of-life care. Through his advo-

cacy of hospice, he has championed

on a system-wide basis the cause of

all who are or will be facing and navi-

gating the journey of end-of-life care.

Dr. Ted’s personal and professional

qualities have long drawn the

respect, trust and admiration of his

nursing and physician colleagues.

His empathic manner has found

particular resonance among nurses,

with whom he has long enjoyed a

highly collegial relationship. Patients

and families have grown accustomed

to welcoming him into their homes as

he has delighted in practicing the lost

art of the house call, and have long

relied upon his wise counsel at times

of crisis and despair. Numerous

community organizations, most

especially Hospice of the Valley,

have benefited from his passion for

the practice of medicine and the

example of his exemplary patient care.

“ Chronic pain is so damaging to

the soul,” Dr. Ted said. “I will not

let a patient in my care have the

sun set with them in pain.”

It goes without saying that Dr. Ted is

one of the most ethical, conscientious,

gentle, mindful and gracious physicians

you could have the pleasure to meet.

His commitment to excellence in

medicine and in the delivery and

provision of compassionate palliative

care to his patients is uncompromising

and commendable.

find new, loving homes for three dogs after the death of their owner.

The Pet Companions volunteers share a love for animals.

These volunteers and their highly-trained dogs visit

patients and families to offer comfort and relief.
