1. Describe the role and process of pharmaceuticals on various diseases. 2. Interpret laboratory and diagnostic test.

COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Given information on the major drug categories, the student will identify the following
for each category: the different classes of drugs, the standard types of drugs, the normal drug dosages, uses, side effects, and interactions.
2. Given information on ophthalmics, otics, and topicals, the student will identify and describe the various types, their uses, side effects, and interactions.
3. Given information on toxicology, the student will identify and describe processes, treatments, and the drugs/chemicals related to toxicology.
4. Given specialized patients such as: pediatric, prenatal, and geriatric, the student will identify and describe how to prevent problems associated with drugs used in these specialized cases.
5. Given information on drug therapy, the student is able to understand the use and side effects of prescription and nonprescription drugs used to treat common disease states.

weekly quizzes. 3. Students are required to read all textbook assignments and work all problems. communicate with their instructor by electronic mail and other provided web-based technologies. Students complete assignments, take tests, and complete all other coursework just as they would in an on-campus class. Instructor will have weekly on-line chats with students. Course work will be submitted via the internet. Students must be in attendance on campus for appointed times and major exams. GRADING POLICY Tests 20% Group Assignments 5% Individual Video Reviews 5% Comprehensive Final exam 70% Students absent from the class during the time of a major examination for test will have NO MAKE-UP EXAMINATIONS, except upon the discretion of the instructor. Students late for the exam will be allowed to take the exam with the remaining scheduled time. The percentage of each activity will weight in the final grade regardless if the student participated in the activity or test. SYLLABUS Syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. Student is responsible for reading and understanding syllabus.

ASSIGNMENTS Individual Video Reviews On various weeks, student will be assigned a webcast video to watch and complete quiz. Group Assignments In your groups, complete the group assignments on by due date. Upload to Eagle Online. These will be counted as quizzes. See schedule for 11pm Sunday due dates.

PHARMACOLOGY OUTLINE
The instructor will be in GoToMeeting from 5-6pm every Tuesday. All assignments and tests are due Sunday at 11pm. Week of June 6 Lesson 1 Foundation of Clinical Pharmacology Acosta Chapter 1
Define the chapter’s key terms. Identify the different names assigned to drugs. Distinguish between prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and controlled
substances. Identify factors that influence drug action. Discuss the types of drug interactions that may occur. Discuss the use of herbal medicines.

Blood Cell & Blood Chemistry Tests Moisio Chapter 1
Identify the major components of blood and describe the basic function of each component.
Compare the two types of blood collection procedures. Identify and describe commonly performed blood cell tests. Differentiate between red blood cell, white blood cell and platelet tests. Relate specific blood cell tests to appropriate diagnoses.

Identify and define blood chemistry tests. Organize blood chemistry tests according to defined categories. Explain the effects of increased or decreased serum electrolyte levels. Compare the diagnostic significance of various blood sugar and related tests.
