Housing with compassion…development with a vision.
HUDSON RIVER HOUSING EXISTS TO IMPROVE LIVES AND COMMUNITIES.
WE DO THIS BY DEVELOPING AND MANAGING AFFORDABLE HOUSING, PROVIDING HOUSING SERVICES AND EDUCATION, AND REVITALIZING NEIGHBORHOODS.
“Hudson River Housing, in the more than 30 years that we’ve been in business, has become a true institution in the community. ”
Ed Murphy, Executive Director
What began with a small, committed group of concerned citizens and a single program – Gannett House – has grown over the past three decades into a large, multi-service provider of housing and services to a wide range of populations.
Today, Hudson River Housing’s reach extends across the Hudson Valley, to people from 1 to 99, from the homeless to the homeowner, and to entire communities.
What do we do?
We work to create a path out of homelessness for individuals and families. Our programming spans from emergency shelters to transitional and permanent supported housing programs. We have specialized programming dedicated to single adults, families, veterans, and those with mental health and chemical dependency issues. Our primary goal is to move people to self-sufficiency.
Emergency & Supportive Housing
We help meet the needs of young people whose housing stability is threatened. We offer emergency shelter, crisis intervention, transitional housing and case management. Our goal is to strengthen life skills and offer an accepting environment in which to plan a brighter future.
Youth Services
We own and operate rental housing for individuals, families, and seniors throughout the Hudson Valley. Our housing options range from communal living units to four-bedroom apartments. Our goal is to provide opportunities for low and moderate income residents, young adults, and seniors to afford to stay and live in the area.
Affordable Housing
Through our NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center of Dutchess County, we promote homeownership, create educated and confident homebuyers, and assist homeowners in preserving their investment. Our goal is to help people achieve the dream of homeownership and strengthen neighborhoods.
Home Ownership Promotion & Preservation
We develop affordable housing through rehabilitation and new construction, and preserve and redevelop historic properties. We work to actively engage residents and neighborhoods in our work to build stronger communities. Our goal is to ensure we have sufficient housing available to all, and create vibrant, sustainable communities.
Neighborhood Revitalization
“We are a provider of housing services, but beyond that we are really a community builder- we believe in community revitalization. So it’s not just building housing; it’s building communities. And at the very root of community is home. Our message is: Home Matters. ”
Ed Murphy, Executive Director
So what does Hudson River Housing mean to those in our community?
“I remember when I didn’t have a home, how the world looked. Everything looked dark, with no hope. You know, I’ve got hope today. I’ve got some stability today. I’ve got some responsibility today. And all because of that word – home.”
Victor Cook, formerly homeless Hillcrest House resident
“Awesome staff. Like family. I still come by and visit them. I no longer need help, but because of the way they treat me I’m always willing to lend a helping hand to them. So that just shows a lot.” Danitria Wood, former River Haven resident
“What a wonderful job everyone did in helping my dream of being a homeowner come true. I will never forget the kindness, professionalism, and patience shown to me. My house… that has a nice ring to it, right?”
Katrina Davis, homeowner
“A safe haven. It’s a place where you can go and find peace and tranquility. It’s a place you can call your own and say ‘You know what? This is mine.’ ”

2014 IVMF Award for Innovative Excellence
Hudson River Housing’s Support Services For Veteran Families Program has been honored with the 2014 Award For Innovative Excellence (from Syracuse University’s Institute For Veterans and Military Families). The recognition was bestowed as a result of the program’s partnership with the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce to help establish a database of local employers interested in hiring out of work and often-homeless veterans. According to IVMF officials, this is the first time any of the 23 SSVF programs across the state have tapped directly into the business community through a chamber of commerce, creating a landmark program that might serve as a statewide model.
