If you are a Senior, 55 years old or older whois thinking of moving, hiring a Real EstateBroker who has the designation of Senior RealEstate Specialist (SRES) can be a huge asset foryou. An SRES Broker specializes in workingwith Seniors and has a team of localprofessionals providing guidance and resourcesto Seniors who are buying and selling homes inSouthern Oregon. They know how to work withSeniors to make a move as easy and stress-freeas possible. And there is no extra charge.

Often a Senior thinking of moving may wantto downsize after the children have moved outand now the home seems too big for them.Occasionally, a Senior may want to upsize nowthat grandchildren are in the picture. They maywant a bigger house to accommodate theirgrowing family. Sometimes a Senior just wantsto have an easier life and an independentretirement community may be something theyhave been contemplating where most everythingis taken care of for them. Some Seniors andtheir family may choose an assisted livingcommunity when there are some physical andmedical issues to deal with.

A bigger trend that is taking place today isthat more Seniors are wanting to age-in-place.They are very comfortable in their home anddon’t want to deal with the stress of moving.

They would rather stay in their home that theymay have been living in for many years. A goodSRES will have a list of contractors that haveworked with Seniors who can go into the house, evaluate it for safety issues and easier dailyliving such as bars in the shower, higher toilets, the proper smoke alarms, easy egress andingress and easier landscaping.

Whatever a Senior’s intentions are, an SRESis educated and uniquely qualified to listen totheir needs, provide them with resources and beopen to guiding them constantly throughout theselling or aging-in-place process.

Some of the resources a Senior may needare:

Senior moving specialists and organizersCertified Aging-in-Place specialistsElder law attorneyEstate liquidatorsContractors Grief counselorsHome inspectorsReverse mortgage lendersFinancial plannersRetirement and assisted care facilitiesAnd more….

As a move manager one of the biggest andmost important decisions to be made as we “AgeUp” is when to move. It is a daunting decisionthat 95% of us do not want to make, however itis extremely important. There are many reasonswhy we don’t want to make this decision fromwhere will you go, to how will you get there, who will help? Can I afford to move, who willhelp me understand that. One of the biggestreasons seniors don’t move is because they don’tknow where to start and they can’t even imaginehow they will physically pack anything.

There is help, The National Association ofSenior Move Managers has a list of MoveManagement Companies in your area. Thesecompanies can help you downsize your home, they will pack you, hire the movers, unpack you, organize your new home and even make yourbed. Once you hire one of these companies yourworries will diminish.

My parting advise is don’t wait! Make thedecision as to where you want to live, don’tleave the decision up to someone else becauseyou can no longer make the choice yourself.

As the senior housing industry grows, thelanguage used to differentiate between skillednursing, assisted living, memory and respite carecan be difficult to navigate. Unfamiliar verbiageand misunderstandings overshadow the positiveaspects of assisted living. We have set therecord straight with three common, misconceptions associated with senior living.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIESHAVE NO DOCTORS ON SITE –

True, assisted living communities do nothave doctors as a part of the on-site care teambecause assisted living isn’t like living in ahospital. Most communities have options suchas studios, one bedroom and two-bedroom,private apartments with a care staff that canassist with medication management, incontinence care and your meals cooked andserved in a restaurant atmosphere. A nursingteam of a RN, Director of Health Services and aLPN oversee the work of caregivers andmedication technicians. All assisted livingcommunities work directly with your primarydoctor. When touring communities, it’s a goodidea to ask for the facility’s Uniform DisclosureStatement to provide you with the information toassist you in comparing communities and theservices they provide. Oregon Department ofHuman Services requires all assisted livingfacilities to provide you with their disclosurestatement upon request.

PRICES GO UP REGULARLY AND FEESGET TACKED ON –

Most assisted living communities increaseapartment rates modestly every other year.Facilities often make these changes to coincidewith an increase of Social Security benefits. Apersonalized care plan with an a la carte pricingstructure is a good way to ensure you don’t payfor services you won’t use. Always readcontracts, leave no questions unanswered and ifit doesn’t feel right, don’t sign it. All aspects ofassisted living should be transparent.

SENIORS CAN GET EVICTED WITHOUTNOTICE –

A situation that can happen in the seniorliving community is when a resident’s needsincrease and their current home is assistedliving, not memory care. Keep in mind that youmay need to move your loved one into a moreskilled facility. This usually happens when theresident’s health and safety is at stake. Allresidents have rights and access to utilize theOmbudsman, an advocate for residents ofnursing homes, extended care and assisted livingfacilities. The Ombudsman Program is a free, government program under the A.O.A.,Administration of Aging.

“No one longs to live more than someonegrowing old.”

Sophocles

If we live long enough, 100% of us will age.It is HOW we age that differentiates those of usthat age gracefully with a life filled with lifefrom those that age sad and all alone. Nobodysets out to be lonely, but somehow people andcircumstances change. Disability happens, illness happens, life happens. So, how cansomeone that has found themselves unconnectedchange their circumstance? Sometimes it takessome help from family, friends and othermembers in their community.

With the great strides in available healthcareand opportunities for seniors, a new group hasemerged: those living in their “bonus years.”This group is living over the US expectancy of78 years and is not just existing in life but theyare living life. Their desire to enjoy all that lifeoffers unfortunately can conflict with what theirbodies can keep up with. They are looking toattend plays, go shopping with friends, play golf, enjoy a glass of wine. They want to have picnicsand craft gifts - they are driven by a desire forconnectedness. Unfortunately, there are moreseniors desiring this life and not enoughopportunities to get involved. This leaves the

active senior depressed and isolated, oftenresulting in them giving up on living. The bodylives, but the heart slowly dies.

Adult day services, senior resource centers, and companion and homecare agencies are theanswer to this active group of Bonus Yearseniors and their caregivers. The interactivecaregiving in these services allow for vitalregular interaction with other people, especiallyother seniors. Friendships are formed and theirlives are transformed from ones of sadness andloneliness into lives full of health and happiness.

If you or your loved one is lonely andneeding to connect with other seniors, pleaseconsider finding a senior center or an adultdaycare where you can find a sense ofcommunity. Often these centers are free oraccept Medicare, Medicaid or VA payments fortheir services. If transportation is an issue, thenthis is also something that can usually be workedthrough with the center director. Don’t let thecircumstances you are in keep you from meetingnew people and making new memories. Whenseniors are engaged in activities with otherpeople that promotes, physical, mental, socialand emotional wellbeing, they can live theirlives all the way to the end loving life.

There comes a time in the lives of manySeniors when staying in their current home is nolonger safe or a wise choice. Are you thinkingof downsizing and selling your home?

Selling your home can be an overwhelmingexperience along with being emotional andhaving its own physical challenges. You willneed to decide and make decisions on what to dowith a lifetime of possessions, what to donate, discard, sell, keep or store?

Here are a few tips to help you downsize andprepare your house for sale:

Get Started: Set realistic expectations anddecide if you need help. You may tire easily orbecome stressed which is not good for anyone.

The Process: Keep it simple. Start smalland accumulate little successes. Focus on oneroom at a time and create a staging area for youto use temporarily to sort and store items duringthe downsizing process. Place different coloredsticky notes on items to indicate what will bemoved, given to family, donated, sold, shreddedor discarded.

Eliminate the clutter: On the outside-remove excessive yard décor and debris givingyour home great curb appeal.

On the inside-tackle kitchen, closets andstorage areas. Start with flat surfaces, clearingfloors, table tops and furniture. You will wantyour home to be tidy, clean and orderly.

Repair and Refresh: You will want toevaluate if any items are in need of repair. Dothe shrubs need to be trimmed? Does the houseneed to be painted or power washed? Are theappliances in good working order? You willwant your home to show that it has been wellcared for over the years to bring you the best saleprice possible.

As your Realtor we recommend the home beclutter free and have good curb appeal to get thebest possible sale price. We want to help yousimplify and make the transition pleasant andcomfortable with a lot less anxiety and stress.
