Housing Mattersbringing you what matters about your housing
In January 2014, when an opportunity arose to
apply for a grant to build a playground, CHH knew
that 10 St. Andrews Dr. was a perfect !t. This 96 unit
townhouse community in the east end had long
been identifying the need for a safe and inspired
place for children to play. So CHH sta# teamed up
with the newly formed tenant association and Step
by Step (see inside for more on SbS) to complete
the three stage application process for a grant
through Kaboom. Kaboom connects community
organizations with local funding partners to build
safe and fun playgrounds where children can learn
and grow through play.
The application process spanned 3.5 months and
involved lots of e#ort from 10 St. Andrews tenants
to demonstrate their support and commitment
to the project. Tenants Patricia Fenton and
Cindy Steele spearheaded the project and were
instrumental in engaging their neighbours’
support. They organized a petition and developed
engagement teams. After months of hard work
and waiting, on Tuesday, April 8, we found out
that due to the impressive organization and
enthusiasm of the application team, we had beat
out our competitors winning the grant to build
a playground in partnership with Kaboom and
Foresters. When Cindy heard the exciting news,
she `I went out in my front yard and yelled “We
get the park!” and all the kids cheered and started
thanking me`.
The work is not done yet however. Next, the
community will host a design day where children
and their parents will help create the design of
the playground. Then on July 12, 2014 there is
the Build Day, during which 200 volunteers from
10 St. Andrews, CHH, Kaboom, and Foresters build
the playground together and !nally give 10 St.
Andrews their place to play!
Many thanks to our funding partner Foresters,
Kaboom, the residents of 10 St. Andrews and
especially the 10 St. Andrew’s Tenant Association
for their hard work and commitment to the project!
If you’re interested in volunteering to help on build
day, please contact Leanne Ward, Community
Development Coordinator at 905 523 8496, ext
